1. John1 Tillett birth date unknown. John died BEF Feb 1699 in Stafford County, VA. He married Mary Bourne.  Mary was the daughter of William Bourne. Mary died AFT 1698 in Fairfax Co., VA.

1678 - Gloucester Co., VA - grantee 7 Oct 1691 - Stafford Co., VA - purchased 2 parcels of land upon the Occoquon River around Doges Island from Giles Vandacastaill & Tho. Baxter.

Stafford County Court Records:

29 Mar 1692 - Depositionn of John Tillet, aged about 50 or thereabouts, attested by Giles Vanderastaill.
Apr 1692  - Listing of militia action against the Indians in area of Occoquan River includes Giles Vandercastaill and John Tillet.

Will Book, p. 54/55, 12 Mar 1700:  Will of Giles Vandagesteel, dated 28 Feb 1699 - wife Martha, bequests:   Martha Tillet, dau. of John Tillet dec'd; cousin Sarah Tillet and cousin John Tillet, not of legal age and his brother Bonony Tillet. 

John Tillett and Mary Bourne had the following children:

Second Generation

3. Giles Vandecasteel2 Tillett (John1) was born in Gloucester Co., VA? bef 1675. Giles died bef 1736 in Prince William Co., VA.

He married Ann Turley in Prince William Co., VA, ca 1748.    Ann is the daughter of John?? Turley and Elizabeth (Unknown) Turley. Ann married 2nd Willaim Champneys.

John West, in his will of 1716, calls her "daughter-in-law",   {meaning stepdaughter?}. "Item: I give and bequeath unto my Daughter in Law Ann Turley 300 acres of land being the plantation where Edward Carter lived to her and the heirs of her body lawfully begotten & in default of such heirs to my son John West him and his heirs or assigns for ever." "Item: I give and bequeath to the afore said Ann Turley 3,000 lb [tobacco] at the day of her marriage or at the age of sixteen."

Giles purchased land 26 SEP 1678 in Kingston Parish, Gloucester Co., VA.
He purchased land 04 DEC 1706 in Stafford Co., VA.
He purchased land 26 NOV 1717 in Stafford Co., VA.

Virginia Northern Neck Land Grants, Vol. 1, 1694 - 1742, comp'd by Gertrude E. Gray, pub. 1988:
Giles possess 416 A in said Co., part of 1200 a. granted William Harris, Thomas Baxter, & Burr Harrison. Tillet bought from Giles Vandecstell who bought of Harris, Baxter, & Harrison. Regrant to Tillet. Above Occaquan River.
Giles registered to pay taxes in Overwharton Parish Rolls, Stafford Co., VA, 1723. He purchased land 22 FEB 1729 in Stafford Co., VA.

Giles Tillet of Stafford Co. 288 a in Stafford Co. adj. John Turley on Wolf Run & Sandy Run, his own land, Thos. Simpson, Col. Carter.
Land appears to be on Jonathan's Creek of Occaquan River, adj. road to Dogue Island Neck - also/and on Sandy Run & Wolf Run of Occaquan River - also Wolf Run & Pope's Head Run

He purchased land 1732 in Prince William Co., VA.
John Tillett sold to Giles 150 acres, part of 300 acres sold by Jonathan Mothershead to Giles Vandecasteel, who assigned it to John Tillet, grandfather to the above John Tillet and Giles Tillet and their heirs.
John was "the heir in law". Millicent Tillett, wife of John, relinquished her dower rights. Witnesses were Edward Barry, Mark Chilton and John Turley.

1723 - Quit Rent Rolls, Giles listed in Overwharton Parish Roll.

1700 - Giles Tillet and David Straughan took the same route "as ambassadors to the Piscataway tribe of Indians" (from then Stafford, now Fairfax Co to what is now called Heather Island near Point of Rocks, MD) - about 1700 - one year after Giles Vandecasteel and Burr Harrison went. From Catherine, a descendent of Samuel Tillet - "My Edward Barry was the first clerk of Pohick Church and John and Giles Tillett were verstrymen.

1735 - Ann  married Willaim Champneys in Stafford Co., VA, ca 1735. Willaim died ca 1751. Will written 3 Ded 1750, proved 26 Mar 1751, Fairfax Will Book A, p. 443.

17 Mar 1735/36 - James Baxter appointed guardian of Giles Tillet, orphan, Prince William Co. Will Book C, pg. 71. ->>> Who was his father? 

21 Apr 1736/37  - Estate of Giles and John Tillet, Ann A. Champneys signed supplemental inventory. Prince William Co. Will Book C, pg. 77. -

22 Aug 1737- John Turley and Edward Barry appointed guardians of Samuel Tillet, orphan of Giles Tillet. Prince William Co. Will Book C, pg. 128 -

1736 - Ann signed supplemental inventory on Estates of Giles and John Tillet. - as Ann A. Champneys

Ann Turley and Giles Vandecasteel Tillett had the following children:

16 i. James4 Tillett was born in Stafford Co., VA. He married Ann Connell in Stafford Co.? VA, ca 1740. Ann was the              daughter of William James Connell and Elizabeth Tillet. 1751 - Estate of William Champneys (will dated 3 Dec 1750) names wife Ann, legatees: Ann Tillet, dau. of Elizabeth Connell, James Tillet, Elizabeth Connell. Exec: James, Samuel, and Ann Tillet.

+ 18 iii. Samuel Tillett was born bef 1725.  22 Aug 1737- John Turley and Edward Barry appointed guardians of Samuel Tillet, orphan of Giles Tillet. Prince William Co. Will Book C, pg. 128 -

5. John II2 Tillett (John1) was born in Albermarle Co.,, VA bef 1698. John died ca 1733 in Prince William Co., VA.    Morris Veal and John Turley served as executors of his estate.  His will includes wife Millicent, sons George and John and the "child Millicent is now carrying".   

He married Millicent (Unknown) Tillett in Prince William Co., VA, ca 1725. She married Job Carter in Prince William Co., VA, circa 1735. Millicent died 1749 in Prince William Co., VA.  It was the Estate of John Tillet that became the court case in 1753 between Carnaby Veale & John Turley vs. Job Carter.  See Court Case.

John's will is mentioned in Prince William Co., VA Will Book C, pg 12 & 77.2

John II Tillett and Millicent (Unknown) Tillett had the following children:

"George Tillet of Fairfax Co. , VA to John Tillet of same and John to George, 50#  current money of VA, "condition of the above obligation is such whereas by the last will and testament of John Tillet deceased, hath bequeathed unto the said unto the said George and John Tillet a certain tract of land on Sandy Run to be equally divided between them....".  Due to disputes, they submitted the division to arbitrament by Edward Ford, Frances and John Coffer of the same county.  Witness:   Simpson Turley, Thomas Clarke, John Simpson., rec. 21 April 1788, includes map of division of land

9 i. George3 Tillett was born in Stafford/Prince William Co., VA bef 1730.  George married twice, 1st wife unknown, 2nd wife, Sibyl Tyler, dau. of William and Sarah Kincheloe Tyler and widow of  Mr. Middleton. 
From Dale, e-mail 13 Nov 1998: "William Tyler, son of Benjamin Tyler, died in Prince William County in ca 1793 and left a will.   William Tyler was married to  Sarah Kincheloe.  In the will he "lends to his daughter, Eleanor Middleton Tyler Tillett a leas that George Tillett, Nelly's husband, shall have no part of."  Also he says that George Tillet, the man who married my daughter shall have no part of his estate".  He also mentions Sally Tillett, his granddaughter.

George came to Court to file for legal separation from his wife.   "George Tillet had evidently been a widower when he married Sibyl.  His will, probated in 1806, mentions at least nine children.  In 1800, Sibyl was declared a lunatic and placed, by order of the Court, in the public hospital at Williamsburg.


George died  1806 in Fairfax Co., VA. Will dated 9 Mar 1806 and proved 9 Mar 1806, Fairfax Will Book 1, p. 458, Fairfax Co., VA  Children named in Will:

States Michael and Elizabeth are under 21 years old.  Portion to son, John, was payable to his representatives appearing to indicate that he is dead or incapacitated, rec.  25 Aprile 1806. 

George served on a jury in Prince William Co., VA, 26 FEB 1760. Prince William Court Order Book, 1759-1761, Virginia Genealogist, Vol. 19, pps. 101-105.

10 ii. John Tillett was born ca 1730 Stafford/Prince William Co., VA. John died aft Sep 1812 in Bourbon Co., KY (from Bernie).   Married Jane ?.

8. Samuel3 Tillett (Giles Vandecasteel2, John1) was born in Prince William Co., VA bef 1725. Samuel died 1798 in Loudoun Co., VA, at 73 years of age. Will written 20 Aug 1798, proved 10 Sep 1798, Loudoun Co., VA Will Book: F, p. 40.

p. 1 - Sam'll Tillet - 25 Nov 1742 - on line of Bond Veal, Ox Road, John Turley, James Robert, etc. 

He married Ann Barry in Prince William Co., VA, aft 1737. Ann was the daughter of Edward Barry and Mary (Unknown) Barry. Ann died bef 1798 in Loudoun Co., VA.

He was listed as a minor in Orphan's Court records in Prince William Co., VA, 22 AUG 1737. John Turley and Edward Barry are appointed guardians of Samuel Tillet, orphan of Giles Tillet, dec.

Samuel registered to pay taxes in Fairfax Co., VA, 1769.

He made a will in Loudoun Co., VA, 10 SEP 1790. Loudoun Co. Will Book F, p. 40. Wife, Jane, children: Mary, Jane Ann, Giles, Samuel, Sarah, Edward, Margaret, James & Elizabeth.

SAMUEL TILLET, dec'd., his executor, Giles Tillett & Samuel Tillett will sellhis 184 acre plant on Sandy Run in Fairfax Co. 6 miles from Occoquan Mills which is now in the possession of Caleb Stone. - (CMAC  16 Jul 99 {1799})

ii. Mary Tillett was born in Loudoun Co., VA. She married Thomas Sangster in Loudoun Co., VA??.
iii. Jane Tillett was born in Loudoun Co., VA. She married Mr. Stone in Loudoun Co., VA??.
iv. Ann Tillett.
v. Giles Tillett. Giles died ca 1815 in Loudoun Co., VA. Will executed  14 Mar 1815.   Names wife Honor, children Samuel A., Giles, Sarah (Sally) Strauther, Mary (Polly) Davis Jackson, Mahala Saunders; Margarett (Peggy) Pool; Nancy and Effey Clarke. 
vi. Samuel II Tillett was born in Loudoun Co., VA.
vii. Sarah Tillett was born in Loudoun Co., VA. She married Mr. Hammett in Loudoun Co., VA??.
viii. Edward Tillett was born in Loudoun Co., VA.
ix. Margaret Tillett was born in Loudoun Co., VA. She married Mr. Barnett in Loudoun Co., VA??.
