57. Isaac Jacob Truax (Jacob, Isaac du Trieux, Philippe); born 8 May 1726 at Schenectady, NY; married Maria Wyngaard, daughter of Johannes Wyngaard, 16 Jun 1750 at Albany, NY;34 died 17 Apr 1808 at Schenectady, NY.

He was a tavern-keeper.

Isaac was one of the more colourful characters in the family. He owned a tavern on the Old King's Highway between Schenectady and Albany, in the heart of the Albany Pine Bush. The area was notorious as a lair for fur smugglers, brigands and, during the Revolution, Tory sympathizers. Isaac was no exception. His tavern was a popular meeting place for Loyalists, and his son (or possibly his brother) Jacob, also a tavenkeeper on the road, managed to get himself arrested for his resistance to the Rebel cause.

Isaac's tavern had always had a less than savoury reputation. Rumours flourished of imprudent guests being robbed and murdered in the night, their bodies never to be found. In fact, several human skeletons have been found buried in nearby sand dunes! A more conventional graveyard still exists in the woods behind the tavern site, where Isaac, his wife, son and grandson are buried. The oldest stone belongs to Maria Wyngaard, wife of Isaac J. Truax, and is dated May 10th, 1802.

He was also known as Julius Truax.36 He was also known as Gillis Truax. He moved to Canada circa 1792. He was said to be "the first who felled trees in the Township of Dunham." He asked for and received a grant of land at Brome Twp., QC as an 'associate' (Land in the Eastern Townships of Quebec was granted to groups rather than to individuals. The group would be granted an entire township, which they would divide amongst themselves, and they would promise to clear and improve their lot, build roads, etc.) on 19 Aug 1797. He is recognized as a United Empire Loyalist (Sir John Johnson Branch UELAC, Quebec), although his qualifications are not known.

Known children of Elias Truax and Ariaantje Jansen were as follows:

He was also known as Jacob Y Truax. He served in 1776 as Pvt. in Col. Jacob Lansing's Regiment.

Jacob Truax is usually assumed to be the one referred to in the Schenectady Committee of Conspiracies as saying he was 'no Tore but a man for the King', but since that Jacob had the middle name Isaacse, this may refer to the son of Isaac Jacob and not his brother - see Chapter 7.

There is also some confusion between the two Jacobs in the oral history of the family of George Truax of Cornwall, provided by Bev Truax. Her family claims that the Jacob who married Catherine Dochsteder was the son of Isaac J. We know from Isaac J's will that this Jacob had children named Jacob, Magdalen, John and George, which would correspond with Jacob and Catherine's children if we assume that Maria's middle name was Magdalen (not uncommon). Could it be that this was wrong all along? If so, which Jacob died in 1789 on Lake Erie? Which one was arrested by the Committee, and which one served in Lansing's Regiment? This needs to be resolved.

Catherine Dochsteder was baptized on 18 Jan 1752 at Stone Arabia, NY.47 She married Soloman Walley on 6 Jan 1793 at Albany, NY.34 She was also known as Anna Catarina Doxstader.

Known children of Jacob Truax and Catherine Dochsteder were as follows:

63. Abraham Jacobse Truax (Jacob, Isaac du Trieux, Philippe); born 4 Apr 1737 at Schenectady, NY; baptized 8 Jul 1737 at Schenectady, NY;45 married Elizabeth Van Antwerp, daughter of Harmanus Janse Van Antwerp and Neeltje Van Antwerp, 27 Mar 1761 at Schenectady, NY.

He served as a Pvt. 2nd Regiment, Albany Co. Militia (or may have been a different Abraham J. Truax). He 'prayed for land' in Whitton Township, QC in Jul 1795.

The D.A.R., most genealogies, and several histories of the area claim that Abraham Jacobse Truax served in the Second Regiment of the Albany County Militia, and participated in several battles. This seems odd given that he moved to Quebec just a couple of years behind his brother Elias, and that several of his children married into prominent Loyalist families. There was an Abraham J. Truax who appears in the rolls of the 2nd Regiment, but there were a lot Abraham Truaxs in the area, even a few with the middle initial J or I. Abraham Jellis Truax (Volume I, #276) was closely related (brother or first cousin) to all of the other Truaxs who served in the 2nd Regiment of the Albany County Militia - much more closely than Abraham Jacobse Truax was - and I believe that it was he, and not Abraham Jacobse, who served in the Albany County Militia.

The main piece of evidence in all this is a pension application made by Elizabeth Truax, widow of Abraham (National Archives #R.10718). It has always been assumed that this was Elizabeth Van Antwerp; however, Abraham Jellis Truax lived in the same area at the same time and was married to Elizabeth Van Slice. The application was made in 1834, which, if it were made by Elizabeth Van Antwerp, would have made her 93 years old at the time (Elizabeth Van Slice would only have been 81). Also, the application was made from Watervliet, New York, even though Abraham Jacobse and Elizabeth Van Antwerp had moved to Quebec many years before. She may have moved back after his death, but it seems unlikely.

Whichever side he was on, some time around 1795 Abraham moved most of his family north into Missisquoi County in the Eastern Townships region of Quebec, an area heavily populated with United Empire Loyalists. He would have been about 58 years old by then, and most of his children (except for Abraham Jr.) would have been adults.

Elizabeth Van Antwerp was born on 3 May 1741 at Schenectady, NY. She was also known as Elizabeth Van Antwerpen.

Known children of Abraham Jacobse Truax and Elizabeth Van Antwerp were as follows:

64. Andries Bratt Truax (Jacob, Isaac du Trieux, Philippe); born 4 Apr 1739; baptized 29 Apr 1739 at Schenectady, NY;20 married Sophia Truax, daughter of Isaac Truax and Catalina Van Benthuysen, 10 May 1755 at Schenectady, NY;5 married Catalyntje Wyngaard, daughter of Johannes Wyngaard, 13 Feb 1770 at Schenectady, NY.49

He was also known as Jacob LaRue Truax. He moved to Bedford Co., PA, circa 1764.50 (While these are the children commonly attributed to Larue Jacob Truax, in most cases we still have almost no evidence to support their relationship. Unless a will or other document is found specifically naming LaRue's children, this will likely remain a very grey area).
