How to Use This Site!
This site is a regional site that includes Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester Counties in coastal South Carolina. Because of the proscimity of these counties to each other, genealogically and historically they are closely related to one another. If you find your ancestors in one county, please check the other 2. Berkeley and Dorchester were not created until 1882 and 1897 respectively. Your ancestors may have been in Charleston County but suddenly found them selves in Berkeley or Dorchester when they were created as Berkeley was created from Charleston County and Dorchester was created from Berkeley and Colleton Counties. Newspapers published information from all 3 counties.
The South Carolina Tri-Counties Genealogy site is an independent site founded, developed and owned by Virginia and Paul Magee. It is associated with the American Local History Network and the South Carolina American History and Genealogy Project both of which give entry to the Tri-Counties site through their state and county structure. SCTC will continue to exist regardless of the status or longevity of either of these organizations. They provide added access to this site but the work is the work of myself and wonderful volunteers who donate their time to transcribe information to help other South Carolina researchers in their quest to find their ancestors. Many of our volunteers work independently sending in materials that they have obtained and typed up for the site. Others work preparing materials that I have obtained and sent to them.
I have no ancestral roots in South Carolina, in fact, my parents were the first in our family to become residents of Columbia, SC. After I married in 1976, Berkeley County became my home and I have been here ever since. I started this site because of my love for genealogy and my easy access to the materials that other researchers need to find their ancestral roots. Many researchers do not have access to these materials except through the internet, Family History Centers or writing one of the many state and county offices to purchase the materials they need.
Please use this site as a starting place for your research. I have made every effort to make sure that the information online is correct but it is typed by loving human hands and may contain some errors. The site is set up to make it easy to access information about all three counties. Right now, all three counties are on one page. I hope to have enough information soon to be able to create pages for each town or parish. This will make it easier to access specific information for ancestors who were in one town or parish for their whole life. Each town or parish page will contain information that is relevant to that town or parish.
Please remember, all the information that is transcribed for this site is transcribed exactly as it is found in the original documents. If you find mistakes in the information provided here, it is most likely the result of 1 of 2 reasons: 1. The mistake occurred in the original document, or 2. In trying to read the old handwritting, the mistake was made as a result of old records that are very hard to read.
Writing to Me
The most gratifying things to me is to hear from the users of this site. If you like the site and let me know about you, that would be very much appreciated. Your participation in helping the site to develop is welcome and needed. Also, I really enjoy hearing about how the site has been of benefit to you. Those messages, and the interesting things I learn, are my reward for the time and expense of developing the site.
If you have problems with this site, please send a friendly note and I will try to correct the problem. Remember that I receive many emails and it may take some time for me to get back to you, but I will respond to you as soon as possible.
Remember that the resources that make this site so successful have developed because many people have been willing to share what they have. If you have diaries, letters, pictures, deeds, wills, Bible records, school memorabilia, church records, whatever of historical importance relative to these three counties they can and should be submitted to the site so that you can give back some of what you get from your visits here. I recognize that all of you are here to see what you can get from your visit and that is appropriate. But it is also appropriate to give what you have that fits into the subject content of this site. The best way to submit data is in MS Word documents. If it is columnar material, use Excel instead. Photos should be submitted at high resolution as JPG files. I can always reduce photos later but I can not put back resolution that I don't receive in the first place. All guest who submit materials are credited with the submission.
Statement of Purpose
The purpose of this site is to help Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester County researchers in their efforts to find their ancestors. It is My Goal at South Carolina TriCounty Genealogy to provide as many records and research information on Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester Counties as possible in hopes of helping both in state and out of state researchers of these counties. Our other goal (and Just As Important As The First) is to keep genealogy research FREE. Census records, cemetery records, etc. are public records and researchers should not be charged to view them.

How to Contact Me
There are several ways in which you may contact me. My email address for this site is [email protected]. I will do my best to answer any questions, try to take care of any complaints or just write back to say hello.
If you write to me, please make sure you do not have my addresses blocked in your email program. The most frustrating thing to happen when answering email is to get it back as undeliverable. If you write to me and don't hear from me within 7 days, please check to see if your email program is blocking my replies. You can also reach me by snail mail at: Virginia (Ginny) Magee, 110 Meese Rd., Ladson SC 29456. If you would like to contact me by phone, please send me an email and I will send you my phone number. I welcome calls and snail mail from fellow researchers. If you have materials that you would like to contribute, please see How to Contribute to SCTC |
