Her husband was some years a steam loom dresser and went out to New York in June, 1840, by aid from some trades union in Glasgow of which he seems to have been a member, - He wrote to petitioner when he landed at New York - and she answering his letter but has never since heard from him - nor has obtained otherwise any intelligence regarding him - Of course, she is ignorant whether he is in life or not, - His father is dead, his mother is Widow McKaig a pauper at 6/- per month. - her parents are dead: She is sister to William Cochran, fisher and weaver.
8th Aug. 1865. This woman a widow and winder ap. at 36 St. James St. 2 Mar 1868. Ag. ap - says aged about 62 years - millworker - has been disabled by bile last 2 months - 5 chn Margt. widow Rob McGregor resides in Abercorn St. & has 2 chn. is a millworker. John in America. No word from him in the last 10 years. Mary md Wm Rodger a slater in Glasgow & has 3 chn. James - widower, - 1 chd - plasterer presently idle. William - weaver md 2 chn - he idle left town has wf & fam with him. Residence 36 St. James St. 4 years - prior Maxwell St. as above. 5 Jun 1871 Paralytic one side. Sept 1871. This person on Roll at 1/ weekly - admitted to Poorhouse today. 20 Sept 1871 Died in Poorhouse today. |
[The Carlile family was prominent in both the textile and municipal history of Paisley from at least as early as the end of the 18th century. William Carlisle was the owner of Paisley's first big powered threadworks, at Carlile Quay, New Sneddon.
[Aitken's Land in Moss Street, Wolfington's land in Old Sneddon and Wilson's land at 3 Maxwell Street are probably the addresses. 'Lands' were usually tenement properties, and the proper names attached to them were usually those of the original 'feuar', proprietor, or landlord.
[Barrhead was an important centre of the textile industry. They probably went there seeking work.]
