military: He entered military service in January 1941 as a Private, graduated from Officer Candidate school in 1943 and received his commission as a Second Lieutenant.  He served with the Army/Air Corps in Africa and Italy from 1943 through 1945, and was active in the Army Reserve, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel.  He was a member of the Military Officers Association of America.
