birth: Her birth was recorded after almost 2 years delay, with a probably inaccurate birth date (Ontario Vital Records, Northumberland Co. birth: There are two birth records of interest in the England and Wales Civil Registration Index:
  • Moses Henriques Julian: registered 3 qtr 1847, Stepney District, Vol. 2 p.303
  • Henry Julian: registered 2 qtr 1849, Shoreditch District, Vol. 2 p.427
These births appear to be records of the two sons in the household of David Henry Julian in 1851.:
  • Moses Henry Julian, Age: 3, Est. birth year: abt 1848, Where born: St Georges East, Middlesex
  • Henry Julian, Age: 2, Est. birth year: abt 1849, Where born: Shoreditch, Middlesex
No further record has been found of a child in the family named Moses. Henry's birth date on his tombstone is clearly 28 Oct 1847, which matches the birth record for Moses. Henry's birth date in the 1900 census is Nov 1849, which is too late for either birth record.

194. Samuel8 Drake
general: Drakes of Orange Co images 5/16 (references to Drake-Carpenter marriage), image 6 (brief bio, "Samuel D.", son of Joseph) Samuel Drake of Lower Smithfield p.11 (son of Joseph)
relationships: There is conflicting information regarding the identity of Samuel Drake, husband of Eunice Carpenter.  According to her gravestone, Eunice was the "wife of Lt Sam'l Drake, Rev War Soldier" (Find-A-Grave).  Her husband was still living on 29 Jan 1816 when he sold the land in Canandaigua, Ontario Co. that he and Eunice had bought from her father Richard Carpenter.
  1. Samuel Drake, born 20 Apr 1763 Goshen, Orange Co., New York; d.26 May 1826 Batavia, Genesee Co., New York. (Ancestry Family Trees)
    • Family trees (Ancestry.com) describe him as the son of Benjamin Drake and Sarah Smith.  According to Drake Genealogy Database, Samuel was the son of Benjamin's second wife Abigail Knapp.
    • His age is consistent with the Samuel Drake in the Newtown, Tioga Co., New York 1800 census (born 1756-1774) and the Canandaigua, Ontario Co., New York 1810 census (born before 1766).  Daughter Abigail was born in abt 1795 in Newtown; daughter Hannah was born in 1809 in Canandaigua.
    • He supposedly died 26 May 1826 in Batavia, Genesee Co., New York. His age is not consistent with the Samuel Drake in the Batavia, Genesee Co., New York 1820 census (born 1775-1795) (1820 U.S. Samuel Drake).
    • He would have been too young for Revolutionary Service, let alone as a Lieutenant.

  2. Samuel Drake, born abt 1746 at Orange Co., New York; d. after 1810 at Canandaigua NY. On his father-in-law Richard Carpenter's DAR record (Ancestor #: A019512), he is called Samuel Knapp Drake.  On his father Joseph's DAR record (A033410), he is called Samuel D. Drake.  On his own record, he is just Samuel Drake (DAR Ancestor #: A033466). (DAR Genealogy Research)
    • His Knapp middle name has not been found on any other records.  Some genealogists add the mother's surname to a person's name to assist in identification, which may be what has happened here.  Apparently the DAR record considers him to be the other Samuel.
    • Family trees (Ancestry.com) describe him as the son of Joseph Drake and Amy Carman.  Since Joseph and Amy were not married until 1753, Samuel's mother was apparently the unknown first wife of Joseph.
    • Joseph Drake was a Patriot in the Revolutionary War as a member of a Committee Of Safety & Observation. (DAR Ancestor #: A033410)
    • He fits the above 1810 census but is too old for the 1800 census. He did serve in the Revolutionary War, but his rank was that of a soldier.  Eunice's father, Richard Carpenter, was a Lieutenant (DAR Ancestor #: A019512).
No record has been found that specifically identifies Eunice Carpenter as the mother of Abigail Drake.  [It may be on her death certificate, which I have not seen.] The descendant on the DAR records is her sister Hannah, born in 1809 when Abigail was 14 years old.

Drakes of Orange Co., and Samuel Drake of Lower Smithfield mention both Samuels, but without details.  Both sources say Eunice's husband was the son of Joseph.  Joseph and Benjamin were brothers, and the two Samuel's were first cousins, so Abigai's Drake great-grandfather is the same, regardless of which Samuel was her father.

Samuel, born 1746, is the more likely father of Abigail, primarily because of the Revolutionary War Service of that Samuel, and Joseph's DAR record.  However, Drake Genealogy Database states: "Lillian Drake Avery (1926) [Samuel Drake of Lower Smithfield] states that Joseph was married first to a wife whose name is not known, and states that they had one son.  She then proceeds to list three children Samuel, Mary and William, whose birthdates preceed Joseph's known marriage to his wife Amy.  There is no evidence to suggest that Joseph was married twice, nor that the claimed children Samuel, Mary and William belong to his family."

Given all the confusion about marriages, and lack of evidence regarding Joseph as the father, I have chosen not to continue this line beyond Samuel.
