"James was wounded in the Civil War. His parents were from Scotland, according to the 1900 U. S. Census Records. His wife was Cynthia Ann Winn, whom he married in the Township of Elmira, Solano County, California on 31 May 1874. They had sixteen children.
Obituary, Supplement to "The Free Lance", Hollister, California 10 January 1908: Death ended the sufferings of W. J. Scott at the Napa State Hospital Monday. He became an inmate of that institution a year ago, suffering from softening of the brain. Deceased was a veteran of the civil war and was engaged in the carpet laying business in this city for many years. He is survived by a widow and several children. The remains were brought to this city for interment the funeral being held Wednesday, under the auspices of Docas Dalla Tribe I. O. R. M. [Order of Red Men].
