WOMAN LEAVES 163 DIRECT DESCENDANTS
Six Children, 34 Grand, 109 Gread and 14 Great great Grandchildren
"Grandma" Lindsey, who died at Doe Run Tuedsay morning, left a remarkably large family of direct descendants - 163. Rev. Jeffries, who conducted the funeral service, told The News that in all his 26 years experience in the ministry, he had never known of such a large family. We do not believe in our 35 years of newspaper experience we have ever before reported the death of a person whose direct descendants were so numorous, although we have been used to having news stories about Missouri families which as a rule are quite large.
Following is a brief story of the life of this good woman:
Melcina Lindsey, generally known as "Grandma" Lindsey, was born on January 10, 1836 and was the daughter of the late Harvey and Adaline Mills. She departed this life at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. W. Boswell of Doe Run, Mo., on Aug. 28, 1928, age 92 years, 7 months and 10 days. She professed faith in Christ when very young and lived a devoted Christian until the time of her death. About two years ago she moved her membership to the United Baptist Church at Doe Run.
She was united in marriage to J. S. Lindsey on April 27, 1852, who peceded her in death in 1897. To this union were born eleven children, five boys and six girls, six of whom survive. They are Mrs. Marion Hatfield of Ava, Ill., Mrs. Martin Chaboude, of Granite City, Ill., Mrs. J. D. Meadows, of Desloge, Mo.; and Mrs. J. W. Boswell, of Doe run; Riley of Bismarck and Frank of Desloge. She was the grandmother of 34 grandchildren, 109 great grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren--163 direct descendants.
The funeral services were conducted at the Missionary Baptist church at Doe Run on Wednesday, Aug. 29th by Rev. Jeffries, of Farmington. Six of her grandsons served as pall bearers and six granddaughters as flower girls. The remains were laid to rest by the side of her husband in the Hamilton cemetery, near Bismarck.
