Lemuel K. Johnson was born Nov. 17, 1855 at Nashville, Tenn., and departed this life at Gage, Okla., Feb. 29, 1928, at the age of 72 yrs, 3 months, and 12 days. He was one of a family of 12 children born to the union of Addison and Nancy Johnson. He moved with his parents to Gault, Mo., when 4 years of age. Was married to Sarah Ellen Rhoads, May 25, 1882. To this union were born ten children, 5 sons and 5 daughters, Mrs. Mary Ellen Robbins, Hartman, Colorado; Thomas Alexander Johnson, killed by lightning, July 14, 1907; Mrs. Della Eliza Beach, Havensville; Mrs Dolly Jane VanBuskirk, Colorado Springs, Colo., Mrs. Junetta Zirger, Gage , Okla.; William Riley Johnson, Catesby Okla.; Ida Myrtle Johnson, died , Dec. 27, 1897; David Alfred Johnson, Gage, Okla; Joseph Addison Johnson died Aug. 28, 1916.
He was the most devoted husband and father having endured many hardships in life to live for his family. He was a constant neighbor and friend in time of need, being well read in scripture, knew where most any t ext was found in the bible. He lived in the states of Missouri, Nebraska, and Kansas, before going to Oklahoma, March 2, 1910; having traded his farm in the Corning neighborhood for a farm 14 miles north of Gage. Later bought a place nearer town and 4 years ago went to Colorado Springs and spent one and a half year for his wife's health. Two years ago moved to town at Gage, Okla., giving up farming which he so liked to do.
He was converted to Christ in May, 1920, took up his cross to endure with the children of God. He was a sufferer with an abscess in the lung, more than a month but was thought to be better the day before, but he said to his daughter when she arrived that day. "My time is short but oh D ella; I'm so glad you came. I haven't saw you for 5 yrs. I'm going to Heaven I'm so glad I'm ready to go."
He passed peacefully on to his reward. He leaves to mourn his loss a devoted wife who so patiently cared for him through it all. 2 sons and 4 daughters, 33 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren, one brother, Scot t Johnson, 2 sisters, Mary Jane Winfrey, Wichita, Kans., Elizabeth Williams, Laverne, Okla.; and a host of friends and neighbors that feel the l oss of a dear friend. All the children were present at the funeral whic h was held at the Methodist church at 3 p.m. March 3, 1928; conducted by a lady minister, Rev. L. B. Pile, assisted by Rev. Rose. He was laid t o rest in the Gage cemetery.
Those who came to attend the funeral of L. K. Johnson were: Mrs. D. B . Robbins, Hartman, Colo.; Mrs. Delia E. Beach and Miss Myrtle, Havensv ille, Kansas; Mr and Mrs J. W. VanBuskirk and 3 sons of Colorado Spring s, Colo., W. R. Johnson, Catesby, Okla.; Mrs. J. Z. Cloud and daughter F rances Isteta, N. M.; Mrs Jas. McMillan and 2 daughters, Robby Evlyn and Betty Cone, Colorado Springs, Colo., Mr and Mrs L. E. Reidle, Perry, O kla., Clarence Johnson, Stillwater, Okla.; Mr and Mrs Van Manuell, Catesby, Okla.; Mr and Mrs. Claud Wever, Shattuck, Okla.
