Leslie Ward, 96, of Murphysboro, died at 1p.m. Thursday, April 1, 2004 at his home.
Leslie was born Jan. 17, 1908, in Ava IL to the late James Walter and Dora Elzilda (Carter) Ward. He married Ellen Elizabeth (Cook) on March 5, 1930, and she preceded him in death on June 27, 1967. He later married Jonina (Jonsdottir) in Iceland on Jan. 6, 1968 and she survives in Murphysboro, later to return to Iceland to live permanently.
Mr. Ward was an associate enjineer for AT&T having worked in Iceland, Iran, Greenland and Alaska. He lived in Vandalia from the 1930's until 1967. While living in Vandalia, he was a member of the Lions Club and past president of the Lions Club.
Other survivors incude one son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Rita Ward of Madeira Beach, FL, one sister, Chresta Lockard of Murphysboro; one sister-in-law, Mildred Ward of Murphysboro; two granddaughters, Lori Krezowski of Bloomington, Minn,. and Debra Ahrenholz of Farmington, Minn; one stepson, Joh Gisilason of Iceland; two stepdaughters, Margaret Gisaladottr and Juliana Gisaladottr, both of Iceland; and seven great grandchildren.
Three brothers and two sisters also preceded him in death. |

Ray W. Ward, 80, of Route 5, died at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, June 2, 1990 in St. Joseph Memorial Hospital.
Ray was a retired businessman. He currently owned and operated Ray's Sharp Shop.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Eagles Lodge 670 and the Masonic Lodge.
He was born May 11, 1910, in Murphysboro to James W. Ward and Dora E. (Carter)Ward.
He married Louis M. Hauner Nov 20, 1932, in Murphysboro. She survives.
Other survivors include one son, David R. Ward of West Frankfor; three daughters, Avleen F. Diers of Murphysboro, Gayle N. Gillmore of Murphysboro and Laurel W. Rodriguez of Edwardsville; two brothers, Leslie Ward of Murphysboro and Laverne "Soggy" Ward of Murphysboro; three sisters, Nadeen Gillooly, Chresta Lockard and Naomi Holliday, all of Murphysboro; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

Elmer R. Ward died Monday, Dec 17, 1984, in St. Joshph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro.
He was a retired president of J.W.Ward Transfer Co. in Murphysboro.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, served in Warld War II and was a member of American Legion Post 127 and the Veterans of foreign Wars Post 7290, both in Murphysboro. He also was a member of the Eagles Lodge 670 and Elks Lodge 572. He was a past president of the Murphysboro Chamber of Commerce, a member of the St. Joseph Memorial Hospital executive committee responsible for construction of the hospital in 1959, and a former member of the Murphysboro Industrial Committee.
He was born Aug. 14, 1913, in Murphysboro, to J.W. and Dora Carter Ward. He married Vida Gold June 14, 1944 in Norfolk, VA.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Tom Fricke of Murphysboro; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; three sisters, Nadeen Gillooly, Chresta Lockard and Naomi Holliday, all of Murphysboro; and three brothers, Leslie Ward, Raymond Ward and Laverne "Soggy" Ward, all of Murphysboro.

Nadeen Ward Gillooly, age 83, of San Antonio, TX, formerly of Murphysboro, died at 4:05 a.m. Wednesday Sept 20, 2000 in North Central Baptist Hospital in San Antonio.
She was born June 12, 1917 in Murphysboro, the daughter of James Walter and Dora Carter Ward. Prior to moving to San Antonio, Nadeen had spent most of her life in Murphysboro, but also spent 12 years living in the Panama Canal Zone.
She was a retired bookkeeper and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Murphysboro. She also operated a Hair salon in Murphysboro in the 1960's.
Survivors include her husband of 45 years, Eugene Gillooly of San Antonio; two sons, Ronald E. Hagler of Westlake Village, Calif and Daniel R. Hagler of Dallas; two daughters, Georgia Lee Herring of Charlotte, N.C. and Karen Braswell of San Antonio; 12 grandchildren; 24 great grand children; four greet-great-grandchildren; one brother, Leslie Ward and one sister, Chresta Lockard, both of Murphysboro.

Gene Gillooly 79, died at 6:12 p.m., Wednesday June 12, 2002 at the home of his daughter Karen in San Antonio, Texas after a prolonged illness of heart disease. He was residing with his daughter and peacefully joined his wife in death on the date of her birthday. Gene donated his body to the University of Texas Health Science center school of medicine in San Antonio, TX.
Gene was born July 4, 1922 to the parents James and Katherine Puttmann Gillooly in Murphysboro, Illinois. He was tenth of 13 children. All precede him in death but two sisters, Thelma Huppert and Mary King both of Murphysboro.
Gene married Nadeen E. Ward on March 19 1955 in Murphysboro. He served in the U.S. Army diring WW II. He owned and operated the "Old Rome Tavern" in Murphysboro from 1957-1969. He then worked for Southern Illinois University for the Botany dept. He retired as the Botany Green House manager. He and Nadeen lived most of their lives in Murphysboro, moving to San Antonio, TX in January of 2000 to be close to family.
Survivors include his daughter Karen Braswell of San Antonio, TX, a stepdaughter Georgia Lee Herring of Charlotte, NC and two stepsons, Ron Hagler of Westlake Village, CA and Dan Hagler of Dallas, TX. Grandchildren include Jeanette Braswell of FL, Ann Tiller and Michael Braswell of San Antonio, TX. He also leaves nine step grandchildren, one precedes him in death, 26 step great grandchildren and four step great great grandchildren.

Laverne Walter "Soggy" Ward, 71 of 1016 N. 16th St. died at 6:05 p.m. Monday Sept 16, 1991 at home.
Mr. Ward was born to James W. and Dora E. (Carter) Ward.
He was an Army veteran of WW II. He served in the Europen and Pacific theaters.
He was a lifelong member and former trustee of the First Baptist Church of Murphysboro, IL. He was a member and past comander of Vetereans of Foriegn Warrs Post 7190, a member of American Legion Post 127, past president of the Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Moose Lodge 1591 and the Jackson County Country Club. He also was on the Industrial Committee, which was instrumental in bringing McNair Aluminum to Murphysboro. He also was on the Jackson Community Workshop board for many years.
Mr. Ward had owned and operated Ward Transfer in Murphysboro.
He married Mildred Kimmel on July 20, 1942, in Union, MO.
His survivors include his wife, three daughters, Sandra and her husband Jack Williams, of Murphysboro, Brenda Shadron of Cape Girardeau and Sharon and her husband Michael Jones of Murphysboro; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Leslie Ward of Murphysboro; and two sisters, Nadeen Gillooly and Chresta Lockard, both of Murphysboro.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Elmer and Raymond Ward, two sisters, Naomi Holliday and Fern Ward and one grandson, Stephen Ward Williams.

Charles Leland Lockard, 82, died at 10:25 a.m., Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at home.
He was born on Monday, Dec 27, 1920, in Cobden IL. to Herbert Lee Lockard and Lettia May (Gunn) Lockard.
He served in the U.S. Navy during WW II. We was a member of the First Baptist Church, where he served over the years as church moderator, deacon, board of trustees and finance board. He also served as superintendent of the Junion High Department. He received his masters in education at SIU Carbondale. He retired from Murphysboro School District 186 after 36 years as a teacher and principal, spending most of his years as a principal at Logan elementary school, touching many lives. He also was principal and taught at Carruthers middle school. He was a life member of Elementary School Principal Association, Illinois Education Association and the Jackson County Retired Teachers Association. He also was a member of the Carpenters Union. For many years he worked during the summer months assisting in his father's business, H.L.Lockard Construction.
He married Chresta A. Ward in Murphysboro on March 26, 1944.
He leaves behind 3 daughters and their spouses, Lea Ann and Bruce Fager, Sue Lynn and Murl Johnson and Janet and Bryce Cramer, all of Murphysboro, IL.; one sister, Louise Rahming of Murphysboro; grandchildren, Byram, Brad, Darin and wife Nicki Fager, Stephanie and Andrea Johnson, Kim and husband Kent James, and Shaun Cramer; great grandchildren, Robert Fager, Garrett and Zach James; many nieces, nephews, cousins and many wonderful friends.
Leland loved sharing stories and seeing his former students. |
