LEO ELDON BROWN (11/15/1921 - 10/29/2001)
Leo Eldon Brown, 79, son of Milton Clay and Mable Jolliff Brown was born November 15, 1921, near Rutledge, MO and passed away at the V.A. Medical Center in Iowa City, IA on October 29, 2001. He graduated from the Memphis High School, Memphis, MO with the class of 1939. He was inducted into the Army in August 1942 at Ft. Sheridan, IL and did his training in California before spending 21 months in the Aleutians on the islands of Attu and Shemya. He was discharged from the Army at Ft. Bliss, TX on November 4, 1945. On August 11, 1945 he married Jewell Norton in Memphis, MO. They are the parents of four children. He had an auto repair shop for many years. He worked for six years with his son in Tulsa, OK, in his aviation engine and cylinder repair shop. In later years he repaired and refinished old furniture. This was his most enjoyable pastime. He was a pilot and restored a 1941 Piper J-3 Cub. The only plane to ever sit on the courthouse lawn and go around the square in the Antique Days Parade. He is survived by his wife of 56 years; his children, Janice K. Lehr of Tulsa, OK, Larry Brown and his wife, Kathy of Nowata, OK, Linda Kapfer of Memphis, MO, and Beverly Rhoades of Moscow, ID; seven grand-children, Juanita Christenson, Joey and Erica Jones, Brian Rhoades, Aaron Lehr, Brandi Kapfer and Laura Hufferd; six great-grandchildren, Ashley and Shelby Renkes, Brad Jones, Aaron Jr., Courtney Jewel and Allison Lehr; two nieces, Reva Hustead and Neta Phillips. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Vivian Phillips and two grandsons, Carl Leo Lehr and Brenton Alan Rhoades. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. The family has suggested memorials to the Scotland County Memorial Library. Funeral services were held November 1, 2001 at the Payne Funeral Chapel in Memphis, MO, with Brother Jack Sumption officiating. Soloist was Joe Fulk. Body bearers were Waldo McWilliam, Bob Shanes, Franklin Reed, Keith Dunn, Wesley Lay and Bill Coffrin. Special honorary bearer was David McRobert. Military graveside services were provided by the Wallace Gillespie Post #4958, Memphis, MO. Interment was in the Bible Grove Church of Christ Cemetery, Bible Grove, MO. Payne Funeral Chapel of Memphis, MO was in charge of arrangements.

Ruby L. Purvis, 88, life long resident of Scotland County, Missouri, died Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at the Scotland County Care Center in Memphis, Missouri.
  She was born February 26, 1920 in Scotland County to Emmor Rolla and Marjory Blanche Shook Spees. She attended Spees Country School.
  Ruby married Phillip Elmer Purvis on January 29, 1936 in Kirksville, Missouri and to this union a daughter was born.
  Ruby and her husband were farmers. After his death in 1987 she continued to live on the farm and at age 85 she was having logs cut and bulldozing done on her farm.
  Ruby was a member of the First Christian Church in Memphis. She served as Deaconess, Chairman of the Christian Workers and Supply Superintendent for many years. She was a volunteer for the Scotland County Oats Bus and one year received the "Volunteer of the Year" award. She was a beauty operator and operated her own business, Ruby's Prim Parlor, for twenty years.
  One of Ruby's greatest joys was playing music with "The Missouri Travelers'" at nursing homes and senior centers. She played the guitar and sang with the group that included Elmer and their friends.
  Survivors include her daughter Carol Vance; three grandchildren: Lonnie Vance and his wife, Jan; Connie Ruff and her husband, Doug and Patty Forchee and her husband, Mark, all of St. Charles, Missouri; five great-grandchildren: Courtney Tiesing, Landon Vance, Lindsay Vance, Dustin Ruff and Madalyn Ruff, all of St. Charles, Missouri. She is also survived by a sister, Bernice Lister, of Bloomfield, Iowa; a sister-in-law, June Spees of Downing, Missouri; a brother-in-law, Bill Purvis and his wife, Verna, of Memphis, Missouri; many cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
  Preceding her in death were her grandparents who raised her, her parents, two sisters: Marie Garrett, Dorothy Followell and a brother, Vern Spees,

  Funeral services were held Sunday, January 18, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. with Brother Jack Sumption officiating. Joe Fulk, organist played The Old Rugged Cross and How Great Thou Art. Burial was in the Concord Cemetery. Casket bearers were Ronnie Brown, Richard Purvis, Lynn Purvis, Larry Purvis, Jamie Kice and Phil Duley. . As an expression of sympathy memorials may be given to the Scotland County Cancer Fund or the Scotland County Nutrition Center.

  He was born November 10, 1923 in Scotland County to Phillip A. and Alva L. Tippett Purvis. He attended country school through the eighth grade. Bill was the last of twelve siblings to pass away.
  He married Dora Dean Penny on June 8, 1946 and to this union four children were born. Dora passed away December 3, 1969. He then married Verna L. Peck Howard on January 23, 1971 in Memphis, Missouri.
  He served as a tail gunner with the Army Air Corp during World War II in the South Pacific.
  Bill was a row crop and livestock farmer. He operated a bulldozer, and also worked at the family owned saw mill. In his later years he worked at the Memphis Recreation Center and performed countless "handyman" jobs for many people. Bill was a kind and generous father and stepfather and always treated people with the same respect as he would have wanted to be treated.
  He was a charter member of the Memphis V.F.W. Wallace W. Gillespie Memorial Post #4958 and a member of the First Baptist Church in Memphis.
  He is survived by his wife, Verna, of Memphis; a daughter, Phyllis Purvis, of Columbia, Missouri; three sons: Larry Purvis and his wife, Lenora; Richard Purvis and his wife, Betty Jo; Lynn Purvis; three stepdaughters: Lea Ann Hughes and her husband, Alan; Debbie Shepherd; Annette Schwab; five stepsons: Stephen Howard; David Howard and his wife, Debbie; Douglas Howard and his wife, Becky; Jon Howard and his wife, Erica and Joe Howard. Other survivors include seven grandchildren; twenty-six step-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, Tori, Zachary and Emma Blakey and Noah and Isaac Purvis; forty-one step-great grandchildren, two great-great-stepgrandchildren, many nieces, nephews and friends.
  He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, four sisters: Mabel Purvis, Mary Rossi, Jessie Onken and Bette Hergenreader; seven brothers: Joe Purvis, Elmer Purvis, Carl Purvis, Charlie Purvis, Herbert Purvis, Wayne Purvis and Hugh Franklin Purvis who died in infancy and two stepsons: Leland Howard and Michael Howard.
  Funeral services were held Saturday, September 17 at 11 A.M. at the First Baptist Church in Memphis with Pastor Dan Hite officiating. Music was provided by Mike and Pam Blaine. Burial followed the service at the Memphis Cemetery. Casket bearers were Chris Purvis, Jeff Purvis, Nathan Purvis, Phillip Purvis, Isaac Purvis, Shawn Blakey and Lonnie Vance. Full military honors were accorded by the Wallace W. Gillespie Memorial Post #4958. To honor Bill's memory, a memorial may be made for the Concord Cemetery and may be left at or mailed to Memphis Funeral Home, 378 South Market Street, Memphis, Missouri 63555. Bette Hergenraeder died March 19, 2007, at Wyoming Medical Center, Casper, WY, after a valiant fight.
  She was born on July 15, 1927 on the family farm in Memphis, MO, the 12th child of Pillip and Alva Purvis.
  She married Raymond F. Hayden, Jr. in 1948 and they moved to Cody, WY, and then later to Lost Cabin, WY. They had two sons, and were later divorced. She married William Hergenraeder in 1968. They enjoyed golf and travel. They were later divorced.
  Bette was a longtime member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Casper, WY, since 1961, transferring from FCC in Memphis, MO. She loved teaching Sunday School and was active in C.W.F., and later transferred to 1st Presbyterian in Evanston, WY, where she served as Christian Education Director, then returning to Casper, WY in 2005.
  She was president of the WY Chapter of BPW, and worked with the elderly. She worked at the Natrona County Treasurer's office, True Oil and Chevron USA. She transferred with Chevron to Rangely, CO, in 1984. She was active in the community and made many good friends while there. In 1987 she moved to Evanston, WY and retired after 20 years with Chevron. She became involved in the community right away, and became active with the Presbyterian Church in Evanston, began selling Avon, was active in the school system, worked at the museum, and had many friends who touched her life and whose life she touched. She loved working with children and the elderly. She loved being with her family and many friends she had.
  She is survived by her sons, Raymond Hayden and his wife, Rhonda of Evanston, WY, and Marcus Hayden and his wife, Lori of Casper, WY; her grandchildren, Parker and Whitney of Evanston, WY, Ashley, Travis and Melissa of Casper, WY; and great-granddaughter, Kayleigh Marie Hayden; and several nieces and nephews.
  She was preceded in death by her parents; seven brothers and four sisters. She will be dearly missed by her family and her many friends that she treasured.
  Funeral services were held March 22, 2007, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) with Rev. Dr. Bryant Badger, Senior Minister, and Rev. Paul Hallock, FCC and Casper College, Casper, WY. Betty Walts was the organist. Granddaughter Ashley Hayden had the obituary and memories. Burial will be at Memphis, MO. Memorials may be made to Casper Youth Baseball for the kids, P.O.
