Leslie Stice, UI professor emeritus, dies
URBANA - Private family services will be held for Leslie F. Stice, 89, of Urbana, a professor emeritus of agricultural economics at the University of Illinois.
There will be no visitation. Entombment will be at Mount Hope Mausoleum, Urbana. Renner-Wikoff Chapel, 1900 S. Philo Road, U, is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Stice, died at 12:25 p.m. Saturday (Sept., 12, 1998) at the Champaign County Nursing Home, Urbana.
He was born Dec. 3, 1908 in Moorewood, Okla., a son of John Henry and Alice May Huff Stice. He married Ann Schilling on Sept. 1, 1935 in Elkhart, Kan. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, David Stice of Summit Part, Utah, and James Stice of Salt Lake City; a daughter, Mary Ann Phillips of Corydon, Ind.; a brother, Paul Stice of Leedey, Okla.; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother.
Mr. Stice attended public schools in Oklahoma and El Paso, Texas and college at West Texas University. He obtained a bachelor's degree in 1937 from Oklahoma State University and did graduate work there in 1937 and 1938. He did his core Ph.D. work at the University of Illinois from 1941 to 1943.
He served on the Oklahoma State University faculty from 1939 to 1941 as an Extension economist in agricultural economics. For 35 years at the University of Illinois, Mr. Stice served as a professor of agricultural marketing and as an Extension economist. In the late 1960's, he was a member of a team sponsored by the Foreign Agriculture Service to aid the Phillippines, Hong Kong, India, Pakistan and Turkey.
His major work ws in research feasibility studies and educational programs in the areas of commodity price outlook, the use of futures markets by grain producers and delers, the management of country grain firms, grain quality and inspections procedures and structural changes in grain markets.
He also co-sponsored grain quality and grain-gradings schools for the grain industry in cooperation with grain exchanges at Chicago, St. Louis and Peoria, the state grain dealers associations, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and practicing grain inspectors.
Professor Stice retired in 1976. He was a member of the UI College of Agriculture Sonsumer Environmental Sciences, the American Agriculture Economic Association, Alpha Zeta, Gamma Sigman Delta and Epsilon Sigma Phi.
He was a member of the Wesley Methodist Church and the Wesley Foundation.
