James married Evelyn Leroyce DANIEL, daughter of Vess DANIEL and Fannie MANSFIELD, on 11 May 1937 in Palmyra, Marion, Missouri, United States. Evelyn was born on 21 Oct 1921 in Jacksonville, Morgan, Illinois, United States. She died on 11 Jul 2007 in Jacksonville, Morgan, Illinois, United States.

SOURCES:
  1. Obituary:
Evelyn Leroyce Stice Matthews, 85 years, of Jacksonville, IL died Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at Barton W. Stone Home in Jacksonville.
She was born October 21, 1921 in Jacksonville, IL; the daughter of Vess and Fannie Mansfield Daniels. Her mother remarried Albert "Abb" McEvers and upon her mother's death at age 11, she was raised by her step father.
She married James Henry Stice on may 11, 1937 in Palmyra, MO and he preceded in death on December 29, 1979.
She later married Harold L. Matthews on July 18, 1988 in Hannibal, MO and he preceded in death on April 15, 1996.
She is survived by three children from her first marriage, Nettie Belle Crain (husband, Wendell) of Jacksonville, Danny Lee Stice (wife, Marla) of Jacksonville, and Jerry Lynn Stice of Jacksonville; six grandchildren, Georgia Oliver (husband, Alan) of Blandinsville, Wendell Crain Jr. (Wife, Sarah) of Nashville, TN, Barbara Crain of Jacksonville, Jerry Stice Jr. (Wife, Marie) of Manchester, Talisha Stice of Jacksonville, and Angela Stice of Carbondale; 13 great grandchildren; and six great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, James Stice; and infant son, Earl Stice; two grandchildren, Mary Ann Crain Baker and Andrew Stice.
Mrs. Matthews grew up and lived most of her life in the rural area east of Manchester, IL. With her first husband, she owned a farm east of Manchester for many years with many life-long friends still residing in the area. She worked in the fields using a team of horses and raised milk cows without the benefit of electricity. They also raised hogs, chickens and relied upon a garden for their own food. After selling the farm, they hired out to area farmers to assist with harvesting corn fields made inaccessible by mud or flattened by the weather. They shucked corn by hand and hauled it out the field by a team of horses. The also walked many miles weeding bean fields.

She moved to Jacksonville in 1975 where she cleaned houses and provided babysitting services for a living. She cared for many children of family and friends, working well past age of retirement. Her own children were always her first priority and she sacrificed all her life to ensure their needs were met. She enjoyed country and western music and attending square dances. She played the piano, guitar, fiddle and mandolin and liked to sing the old country songs. An avid traveler, she enjoyed seeing the United States on vacation trips with her daughter.

Funeral services will be held 11:30 AM Monday, July 16, 2007 at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home on West State in Jacksonville with burial at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield. A visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10:30 AM Monday until the time of services. Memorial gifts are suggested to Cass-Schuyler Area Hospice.
