Obituary:    Mildred Ruth (Krum) Stice will be remembered for her energy, creativity, curiosity, and her love of nature and family. Until illness slowed her down, Mildred always seemed to be in perpetual motion, pursuing her many hobbies.   Mildred, died in Richland on Saturday, February 26, 2011, at age 90. She was born September 27, 1920, in Yakima, one of four daughters of Lloyd Krum and Bessie (Goodale) Krum. A graduate of Yakima High School, she was crowned Apple Blossom Princess from Yakima in 1939. Mildred married Jesse Stice on February 9, 1941, in Yakima.    The Stices started their long association with Hanford when Jess was hired by DuPont in May 1943, one of the first local engineers to work on the construction of B Reactor. Mildred worked as a secretary on many Hanford projects.   Mildred and Jesse moved to Richland with their two small children in 1951. In 1957, they built the first privately built home in Richland on Harris Avenue. The next year, their second daughter was born.   In 1964, Mildred, Jesse and their youngest daughter moved to India for two years, where Jesse was Resident Manager for General Electric on the Tarapur Power Station. With her usual energy and curiosity, Mildred set out to explore and experience India. She suddenly had six servants, so was free to garden, travel, and get to know the culture. Mildred's father had taught his daughters to hunt, and Mildred even went on a safari in India. She brought back furniture and many decorative items from India with which she decorated her home.   Returning to the U.S., the Stices lived in California and Alabama. In Alabama, Mildred had ample opportunity to raise a large garden and many interesting plants. It was here that she learned oil painting and flower arranging and began winning the first of many ribbons at flower shows and fairs. Mildred and Jesse enjoyed playing golf and exploring the back roads and natural beauty of the South.    The Stices returned to Richland in 1974, bringing the family all together again. They built a unique home below Badger Mountain, and Mildred continued gardening and raising orchids in a large greenhouse. She became active in the Flower Fiddlers Garden Club and The South Central Washington Orchid Society. She was certified as a Master Gardener by the Washington State University Extension Program. Later, she raised sheep and learned to dye, spin and weave wool and was a founder of the Desert Fiber Arts. She also tanned sheep skins and made homemade wine long before it was an area industry. Mildred was always happy to share her knowledge and skills and was one of the first to demonstrate spinning at the Benton County Fair. Jesse Stice died in 1981, and Mildred continued to live in their home until her death.    Mildred was predeceased by her parents, her husband Jesse, and her sister, Dorothy Dobbs. She is survived by: sisters, Thalia Kane and Merle Lindekugel, both of Hawaii; children, Sandra Smith of Richland, Cliff Stice (LaDean Wood) of Kennewick, and Kathy Stice (Mira Lieberman) of Seattle; grandchildren Doug Smith (Alison Evans) of Santa Rosa, California, Kelly Pflieger (Scott) of Kennewick, Craig Stice (Kathy Hicks) of Boise, and Jesse Lieberman of Seattle; and great-grandchildren, Caleb and Ben Pflieger of Kennewick and Alli and Kyah Stice of Boise.   At Mildred's request, there will be no funeral. Family and friends are cordially invited to a Life Celebration on Saturday, March 12, 2-4 p.m. at Mildred's home.   4.
