Shadrach Stice was born in Greenwood, Kentucky, where he spent the early part of his life, and
where he was married. He then moved to Madison county, Illinois, and several years later went to
Scott county, Illinois, where he and his wife lived the remainder of their lives. He died at the age
of fifty-six years, and she at the age of fifty-two years. His union with Lena Hanes resulted in the
birth of the following children: William, who died from the effects of measles contracted while in
the army, during the Civil War; John, deceased; Mary (Killebrew), deceased; Margaret
(Handback); Martin, deceased; Nancy, deceased; Samuel, deceased; George W.; Thomas F.; and
James.
NOTE: there are 4 different citites in Kentucky named Greenwood.

DEATHDATE: Source #7, received from source #6. Newspaper Article titled
"Murdered Near Ridgley".
"On Saturday evening June 26, Mrs. Lucinda Cockrell a widow lady, aged about 75
years living near Ridgely, was found dead in a deep spring not far from her
residence. It was at first supposed that she had accidentally fallen in the
spring head first in which position she was found. An infestigation followed and
it was soon learned that a negro named John Cotton, formerly of this city, had
left the place very suddenly a short time before the the body had been found.
Cotton worked on the same quarter section of land with Mrs. Cockrill for of
relative of hers, and his leaving on the heels of the murder lead to an inquiry
which resulted in him being charged with having committed the crime. It seems
that the negro, who is a bright mullatto and very fine looking, had fallen in
love with a grand-daughter of Mrs. Cockrell's and notwithstanding their
difference in color, laid siege to the heart of the maiden. A letter, written to
the girl by Cotton, fell into the hands of the grandmother and Cotton wanted
very much to regain the latter and it is thought murdered Mrs. Cockrell to get
possession of it. Cotton was traced to Leavenworth and arrested by sheriff Pack,
who placed him in the county jail. He waved a preliminary examination on Monday
last and was committed to jail without bail, and will await the action of the
grand jury."

HISTORY:Source #6: Oral history would have that the murdered lady Lucinda, 2nd
wife of James, was a "mean" woman. She was dis-liked so much that her stepsons
would not let her live with them, instead they made her live in a log cabin on
William's farm, close to a spring. John Cotton was sent to take care of her. He
was not a slave, but a free man. Oral history would have her found dead in the
spring with her hands tied behind her back. She was not buried next to her
husband James, who had died earlier in 1859, but was buried near the spring and
the cabin where she lived.
