Thanks for sending the e-mail. I enjoyed your homepage very much. My understanding has always been that my relatives came to the US about five generations ago from either Scotland or England and settled in Pennsylvania. Later, my great-grandparent(s) (?) moved to Iowa. I have lineage information stored away in a box in the basement that my father's cousin collected so that she could become a member ofthe DAR. I will try to find it and send it to you. By the way, my father's name is William. None of the other names seem common to my family, but it has been awhile since I looked at the information about the ancestors prior to my great-grandparents.

Thanks for the email Steve. I live in Gloucestershire in England but am originally from Swansea in South Wales. All my family still live there. I will have a word with my father and grandfather and see if I can get some info on past generations.Angela Gilchrist

Steve, we recieved your letter and yes, we are Gilchrists. My first name is Barry and originally I am from Massachusetts. The immediate family moved to AZ. in 1967. Most of the close relatives still remain in Mass., with a few spread out in the states of Conn. and Fla. I am very interested in the progress of your research and please keep us posted on your findings. What a great idea. Who knows the extent of long, lost relations.

My full name is Edward Douglas Gilchrist and I was born in Edmonton, Nov. 2, 1950. My father's name was Charles Douglas Mitchell Gilchrist at birth in Edmonton, Nov.13 1919, but he went by the name of Doug and dropped the Mitchell from all his official documents because he did not like that name. My paternal grandfathers name was Dan Gilchrist and he was born in Ontario around 1869. I will try to get more detail to you later on his birthplace, etc. He had two sons, Doug and Donald but Donald did not marry and had no offspring. My dad had two sons and a daughter but my brother died at 17 and had no offspring. I have just one child, my son Andrew Edward, who does not yet have any children.I do not know much about other branches of my grandfathers family, although I once visited my dad's cousin, Hunter Gilchrist in Toronto. I have seen a family tree in an old Bible belonging to my mother. I shall have a look for it and let you know what it says.

and Edward's sister...

I do find it interesting that my grandma's (Margaret Tierney) aunt's and uncles have almost the same list of names as your great grandparent's children. Those being Catherine, Sarah, Pete, Bridget, and a half brother named John. And my grandma's twin sisters name was Mary. John in particular is a name that shows up quite often in my family, especially in the last few generations. My great grandfather was Robert John Gilchrist (Bert) and he married Daisy McLuen. Her father (William McLuen 1832- 1928) came here from Edinburgh Ireland in the year 1841. He was the mayor of Perry, Illinois. A lot of my relatives settled in Fort Dodge, Iowa before moving here to Minnesota. My great grandfather had a sister named Allie Gilchrist who married Frank Regan. My grandfather, John Hurbert Gilchrist, had three sisters, Dorothy, Lela, and Madge, and two brothers, Richard (Dick) and Tom. JILL GILCHRIST
