During my Christmas visit back home, I contacted a fellow
Gilchrist who I knew to be from the Scottish East Coast. Given the statements in the
"Gilchrist story" about none being from that side of Scotland, I thought it
might be of interest to have at least one example (and one by the way who had believed
himself to be an Ogilvy clan member !), albeit from
the Fife peninsula, just south of St Andrews at a place called "East Neuk". I
have returned with an AO sized (40"x22") family tree of his, going back to 1784
with an Andrew Gilchrist at that location. The names in the family are predominantly
Andrew, James and John.

As for my family, they are definitely of the Ayrshire variety. My father does not know much of his family background, but believes they were farmers from the Girvan area. We found your site to be of great interest, although I have little time to spend on this sort of thing. As a matter of further interest, we have a genealogist on my maternal grandmother's side who has traced the whole Corfield family practically back to the Creation! (actually El Cid, by virtue of royal connections in the 17cent.) and published the research himself in Australia. It is quite the most comprehensive bit of work I have seen !.
best regards and happy new year, David Gilchrist
