Residing at Calverhill at time of 1881 census. Also at house at time of 1881 census were two servants (Jane HARRIS, Elizabeth SAUNDERS) and sister-in-law, Emily TUNSTALL. [1117] Margaret Slade wrote: [236] "This is where it became complicated. John Pearce Esquire was John Tunstall Pearce, the son of Thomas Pearce of Norton Canon and of Harriet Tunstall, a grand-daughter of John Tunstall of Canon Pyon, through his son, another John. Jemima Pearce, the wife of John Tunstall Pearce, was a grand-daughter of Thomas Tunstall junior, the nephew of John Tunstall of Canon Pyon. I cannot attempt to describe the degree of cousinship, but it undoubtedly existed. I had earlier discovered this family in Norton Canon when searching for Tunstalls in the 1881 surname index. At Calverhill in Norton Canon in 1881, was John Tunstall Pearce, aged 54, married, and a farmer of 245 acres, employing 6 labourers, born in Llangarren. His wife was Jemima aged 55, born in Oswestry, Salop. Living with were a daughter Emily Edith, 24, unmarried and born in Norton Canon and a son J.F.W. Pearce, aged 21, a farmer's son, also born in Norton Canon. Visiting them was an Emily Tunstall described as a sister-in-law, aged 42, born in Monmouth. I could not the baptism of Emily, but Jemima was baptised on 9.1.1835 at Raglan in Monmouthshire, as daughter of William Tunstall and Elizabeth. I felt at the time that John Tunstall must be a son of Thomas Pearce and Harriet, but there was no reference in the Norton Canon registers to the baptisms of any children of Thomas and Harriet. I was also puzzled at the time by the reference to an Emily Tunstall and could not begin to fathom where she fitted in. John Tunstall Pearce married Jemima Tunstall on 20.5.1852 at Pontesbury in Shropshire. Emily Edith was baptised at Norton Canon on 22.9.1856 and John Frederick William was baptised there on 13.6.1859. I have since discovered – 2000 – that John Tunstall is indeed a son of Thomas Pearce and Harriett Tunstall. They evidently removed to Llangarren in Herefordshire on their marriage – indeed the family of Thomas Pearce possibly already lived there as there are references to a Pearce family in the earlier part of the registers. On 23.5.1822 Thomas, their son was baptised at Llangarren, as son of Thomas Pierce and Harriett of Llangarron Court, farmer. The following year Charlotte was baptised on 23.12.1823. She was followed by John Tunstal and Mary Ann who were both baptised on 1.12.1826 – not I think twins, given the long interval since the last baptism. On 18.8.1828 Louisa was baptised when the name is properly spelt Pearce. Three sons were then baptised - Ravenhill on 13.4.1831, Frederick on 13.2.1833 and Joseph on 30.6.1834. " | ||||||||||||||||
