Did her name also include the name 'Charlotte'. Reason being that George David DURANCE baptised at St Dunstan's had mother's name of Charlotte. This is the same George that appears as witness to Matthew's marriage to Martha Ann COOPER where the mother's name is given as Elizabeth. Further, there is the appearance of Benjamin DURANCE (mariner) in the 1851 census for Stepney (at 9 Martha Street) with wife Charlotte. A Charlotte DURANCE is listed in the 1841 census living on Martha Street...no other DURANCEs are visible in the census film (it was incredibly hard to read, many of the names of Martha Street inhabitants could not be read at all). Might she have remarried later in life? There is a marriage entry in the St Catherine's Index for a Charlotte DURANCE of the same registration district as our Charlotte's son, George: Marriages Sep 1875 - DURANCE Charlotte Elizabeth St Olave 1d 314 [24]

1851 census for St George's in the East lists: Address 9 Martha Street. Living there was Benjamin Durance, aged 61 a Mariner, born Sunderland; wife Charlotte, aged 52, born Scotland, a child Elizabeth M. Parks, aged 8 born Stebonheath(? best guess), and two lodgers, Elizabeth Smith, aged 82 and Joseph R. Chantler aged 40. Not at 9 Martha Street (north) nor at 9 Upper Martha Street at time of 1861 census [624] Couldn't find a Benjamin DURANCE listed in the 1881 census [34]
