| Margaret Slade wrote : "The branch of this family from which you descend comes from Staffordshire. The name originates from the township of Tunstall in the parish of Wolstanton in the north of Staffordshire. Tunstall during the late eighteenth century developed into Tunstall, one of the five pottery towns of Staffordshire. Many of the names associated with the development of the pottery industry appear in the parish register, such as Copland, Spode, Wedgwood and Colclough. There is evidence of a Tunstall family there as far back as the reign of Edward I when a Ralf de Tunstall held land in Wolstanton and so did a Henry de Weggeswood (Wedgwood). Tunstall is a name originally from the north of England so I think it quite possibly that this is a branch of an original Tunstall family that has drifted south as far as Staffordshire. A James Tunstall held a seat in the parish church in 1583 and the name of the family appears in the register as holding various parish offices. " [236] |
