PREFACE

A person lives, a person dies, and except for family and a few friends, is soon forgotten.  If this person served his or her country in securing freedom, that fact also is soon forgotten. This should not be! This is an attempt to keep this memory alive.

For some time, the Joint Veterans Organization of Wayne County has been considering some type of listing of all veterans of Wayne County (OH) that have died and are buried in the cemeteries of Wayne County.

I have taken the challenge to try to list all veterans' graves and the cemeteries in which they are interred. Some graves probably have been missed because they were not properly marked, or the tombstones were no longer legible.

This study has taken several years and several visits to Wayne County cemeteries. It could not have been accomplished without the assistance of Susan Hostetler Oswald, my daughter-in-law, who graciously recorded all the informnation on her computer and furnished the print-outs for the original manuscript.

I am also indebted to Marvin Edwards and Hal Hart for assisting me in recording the Wooster Cemetery. My thanks also go to Dorothy Barnes for her assistance in recording the information on the Wayne County Care Center Cemetery; to Art Bauman for the listing of the Rittman Cemetery; to James Biggs for the listing of Shreve and Newkirk Cemeteries; to Sherwood Memorial Gardens and to Edna Oswals, my wife, for the photographs.

I would also like to acknowledge the assistance and support provided by Charles Craig, Veterans Service Officer, and his staff.

Much of the information on burials prior to 1970 was taken from the Wayne County Burial Records published by the Wayne County Historical Society.

I will continue to record burials as they occur so that there is a continuation of the record of veterans' burials.

There is one group of veterans that I have not been able to properly recognize. These are the veterans whose remains have been cremated and no record is available as to their disposition. Several individuals have contacted me concerning this, and I have included a list of known veterans where information has been made available to me.

If I have overlooked any graves, I am sorry. I would appreciate a note from families or friends giving me the information as follows:  Name, date of birth, date of death, the war in which the individual served or peacetime service, and the cemetery where burial took place, or if cremated, that fact. This information will be included in future addenda to this record.
