WEST SALEM Thomas E. Mendenhall, 60, of West Salem, died Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at his home.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Matteson Funeral Home in West Salem, with Pastor Norman Johnson officiating. Burial will be at West Salem Cemetery.

Friends may call Sunday from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

He was born Dec. 13, 1942, in Lodi to Denver and Ilean (Ramsier) Mendenhall and was employed by Union Pipe Fitters for 20 years.

He was a member of National Rifle Association and a former member of Amvets Post 149.

He was a police officer and chief of police in West Salem, serving under the former Mayor Don Crebs.

Surviving are daughters, Carol (Denny) Riffel of Ashland and Debbie Mendenhall of Ashland; grandchildren, Chad and Derick Riffel and Brody Horner; his mother and stepfather, Ilean and William Kratzer of Ashland; a brother, Denny (Char) Mendenhall of Wadsworth; and sisters, Jeannie (Raymond) Howman, Barb (Gary) Hochstetler and Patty (Dan) Strine, all of Ashland.

His father died in 1944.
