WEST SALEM - Opie Nutter Jr., 72, of West Salem, died Sunday, June 1, 2003, at Lodi Community Hospital.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Matteson Funeral Home in West Salem with the Rev. Judy Claycomb officiating. Burial will be at West Salem Cemetery, where military services will be conducted by James Stevenson American Legion Post 499.

Friends may call Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

He was born Aug. 7, 1930, in Smithers, W.Va., to Opie and Cicel (Myers) Nutter Sr.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He had been employed at LTV Steel for 35 years and was a member of Steel Workers of America.

Surviving are his wife, Caroline (Barker) Nutter, whom he married July 21, 1959; seven children and their spouses, Opie III (Barb) Nutter of Parkersburg, W.Va., Hope (Larry)Farley of Chapmanville, W.Va., Michael (Regina) Nutter of West Salem, Caroline (Tim) Kloock of Berea, Donald (Dottie) Nutter of Chippewa Lake, Gary (Tracey) Nutter of West Salem and David Scott Nutter of Chippewa Lake; 23 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Shirley Allan Nutter of Cleveland, and five sisters, Hope McKnight of Alloy, W.Va., Mona Lord of Michigan, Betty Dent of Danville, W.Va., Mary Haselwood of Eleanor, W.Va., and Tresa Willis of Cannelton, W.Va.

A son, Mark Nutter, and a sister died previously.
