ASHLAND Lowell James Coon Sr., 74, of Ashland, died Tuesday, July 20, 2004, at his home.

Funeral Mass will be Friday, July 23, 2004, at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in West Salem with the Rev. Carl Uhler officiating. Interment will be at West Salem, where military services will be conducted by James Stevenson American Legion Post 499 of West Salem.

Friends may call Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Matteson Funeral Home in West Salem with prayer services at 8:45 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of North Central Ohio, 1605 County Road 1095, Ashland 44805; or St. Stephen's Catholic Church, 44 Britton St., West Salem 44287.

He was born April 18, 1930, in Cleveland to Lowell G. and Myrtle (Martin) Coon.

He served in the U.S. Navy.

He retired in December 1991 from WorkWear in Cleveland and was a member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church.

Surviving are three sons, Lowell (Susie) Coon Jr. of Cambridge, Dean (Charlotte) Jones of North Carolina and Robert (Chris) Coon of Ashland; four daughters, Deborah (Kip) Callihan of Nova, Donna (Daniel) Mounce of Savannah, Diane (Robert) Sturgill of Savannah and Cheryl Coon and her fiance, Skip Fulton of Ashland; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Richard Coon of Westlake and Michael Coon of Fairview Park; and three sisters, Rose Mary Burns of Fairview Park, Mae Coon of Fairview Park and Kay Liskey of Chicago.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Ellen, in 1991, a daughter, Caryl Coon, in 1988 and a brother, Joe Coon.
