WEST SALEM -- Howard W. Babbs Sr., 91, of West Salem, died Monday, March 12, 2007, at Wooster Community Hospital.

Graveside services will be Thursday, March 15, at 11 a.m. at Burbank Cemetery with Pastor James Hostetler officiating. James Stevenson American Legion Post 499 of West Salem will conduct military rites.

There will be no visitation.

Matteson Funeral Home in West Salem is handling the arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to James Stevenson American Legion Post 499, in care of Paul Eicher, 13306 Congress Road, West Salem 44287, or Hospice & Palliative Care of Greater Wayne County, 2525 Back Orrville Road, Wooster 44691.

He was born in Lennington, to Buzz and Blanche (Heid) Babbs.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was a carpenter and a farmer all of his life. He retired in 1972 from Con-Val Co. in Orrville.

He was a member of James Stevenson American Legion Post 499 of West Salem.

Surviving are four children and their spouses, Howard "Ozzie" Jr. and Arlene Babbs of West Salem, Betty Babbs and Peggy Babbs of West Salem and Bruce and Donna Babbs of Cadiz; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren, and a brother and sister-in-law, Gilbert and Maxine Babbs of Robbinsville, N.C.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen Babbs in 1974, two sisters, and a brother.
