Descendants of Charles Bateman and Martha Ellis of Rathclaren Parish, County Cork, Ireland

Third Generation

(Continued)

34. Dora Bateman 1, 2 (John , Charles ) was born on 13 Dec 1824 in Rathclaren Parish, County Cork, Ireland. She was christened 3 on 16 Dec 1824 in Rathclaren Parish, County Cork, Ireland. She died on 6 Jun 1906 in Bathurst, New Brunswick, Canada. She was buried 4 on 8 Jun 1906 in Methodist Burying Ground, Tetagouche, New Brunswick, Canada.

I have been told that the Smyth family Bible gives Dora's birth date as 13 December 1825. However, that is inconsistent by one year with her age as given in all of the following sources:
- The Rathclaren parish register which indicates she was baptised 16 December 1824;
- The 1861 Census (Gloucester County, Bathurst, Northern section), which was to have people give the age they would turn on their 1861 birthday, has William Smyth age 50, Dorah 37 and Martha Bateman 76;
- The 1881 census gives her age as 55;
- St. George's Parish Register, Bathurst: Dora Smith, widow of the late W W Smith, a native of County Cork, Ireland, died June 6, 1906 at the residence of her son George Smith, Tetagouche, at the age of 81 years, 6 months and was buried in the Methodist burying ground Tetagouche, 8 June, 1906 by me J. Hugh Hooper.

Dora married 3, 4 William W. Smyth 1, 2 on 12 Aug 1841 in Rathclaren parislh, County Cork, Ireland. William was born on 21 May 1809 in Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland. He died on 13 May 1887 in Bathurst, New Brunswick. He was buried in Tetagouche, New Brunswick.

Baptism sponsors were Swanton Bateman, Richard Hales (brother or father of Hannah?) and Sarah Tape. Burial Record: Minister Rev. Richard Flood.

Charles married 1, 2 Mary Tayte on 27 Aug 1835 in Restigouche, New Brunswick. Mary was born in 1808 in Ireland. She died in 1886.

Name is sometimes spelled Tait or Tate.

They had the following children:

139 M i Thomas C. Bateman was born 1 in 1837 in New Brunswick. He died on 21 Nov 1893. He was buried 2 in Christ Church, Delaware.

Aged 56 at death.
+ 140 F ii Anna (Hannah) Bateman was born on 15 Mar 1839. She died in 1918.
+ 141 F iii Elizabeth (Betty) Bateman was born on 14 Nov 1841. She died on 30 Dec 1907.
+ 142 F iv Mary Ann Bateman was born in 1843.
143 F v Jane Bateman was born 1 in 1846 in Middlesex County, Upper Canada. She died in 1920.

In 1871 Jane is listed as a stray, 24, Caradoc tp, div 3, p. 62. Living with her mother in 1881, listed as Jane Pulling. When she married in 1887 her residence was listed as Ekfrid tp.
Jane married James Cox on 21 Sep 1887 in Delaware, Ontario. James was born about 1845 in Ireland.

James was a bachelor when he married at age 42.
144 F vi Catherine Bateman 1 was born on 9 Mar 1848 in Middlesex County, Upper Canada. She died 2 on 19 Aug 1883 in Middlesex County, Ontario. She was buried on 20 Aug 1883 in Christ Church, Delaware, Ontario.

Unmarried. In 1861, lived with Alexander and Hannah (nee Bateman--her sister) McLean; in 1871 lived with Richard and Mary (Tayte) Pulling--her mother and step-father; in 1881 with her mother and was listed as Catharine Pulling. Death reg'n #10526-1883; age 35, cause of death not stated, death reported by cousin (unnamed) of Lot 17, R2S (hence must have been a child of her uncle, John Thomas Bateman).

36. John Thomas Bateman (Thomas , Charles ) was born in Sep 1813 in County Cork, Ireland. He was christened 1 on 21 Nov 1813 in Rathclaren Parish, County Cork, Ireland. He died on 11 Jan 1896 in Caradoc Twp, Middlesex County, Ontario. He was buried in Christ Church Yd, Delaware, Ontario.

It is very likely that John Bateman, son of Thomas and Hannah, baptised in Rathclaren parish, County Cork is this John. The baptism sponsors were Thomas Hales (brother or father of Hannah?) and Richard and Eliza Bradfield. Family stories were that John came from Ballydehob, but his origins must have been in Rathclaren.
John and Mary apparently came to Canada West in about 1846. In January 1851 (1851 census) they were living in a one story log house on Lot 8, 5th concession of Caradoc tp.
Christ Church parish register (Delaware) has date of death 11 January 1896; death reg'n #11706-1896 says 12 January 1896: age 81 yrs, 4 mos; born Ireland; cause of death "fracture neck of femur & hypostatic congestion of lungs 4 days"; informant T. McDonald, Burwell Rd [his son-in-law].
From 1936 until 1941 annual reunions of descendants of John and Mary Bateman were held in or near London, Ontario. Records of those reunions were maintained and I was able to track them down in the 1990s.

John married 1 Mary Bateman daughter of Swanton Bateman and Jane Bateman on 25 Aug 1836 in Bathurst, New Brunswick. Mary was born on 10 Apr 1820 in Gloucester County, New Brunswick. She died on 12 Jun 1901 in Caradoc Twp, Middlesex County, Ontario. She was buried in Christ Church Yd, Delaware, Ontario.

Mary Bateman was born in New Brunswick soon after her parents came from Ireland. I have been unable to find any documentation of her parents, other than the census which shows her father Swanton Bateman living with Mary and John. Her mother may have been Mary Hales, the name that has been passed down in the family, although we have not been able to find any documentation supporting this. Mary was living on the family farm, along with the family of her daughter Kate (Catharine Macey, Mrs. Tom MacDonald) for the 1901 census and at the time of her death. Several birth registrations for babies born in Caradoc tp name "Mrs. Bateman" as the "accoucheur" (midwife). It is believed that Mary was that Mrs. Bateman.
Death reg'n #16928--1901: age 81, born New Brunswick, lived Lot 17, R2S cause of death senile decay, 12 weeks.

They had the following children:

+ 145 F i Hannah Bateman was born on 14 Mar 1837. She died on 17 Jan 1914.
+ 146 F ii Elizabeth Bateman was born on 8 Jan 1840. She died on 26 Jul 1883.
147 F iii Jane (Jennie) Bateman was born on 8 Feb 1842 in Bathurst, Gloucester Co., New Brunswick.

Must have died young--possibly in infancy.
+ 148 M iv Swanton Sargent Bateman was born on 19 Jul 1843. He died on 14 Dec 1902.
149 M v Charles Bateman was born on 3 Feb 1846 in Bathurst, Gloucester Co., New Brunswick.

Evidently died young--not with family in 1851.
+ 150 F vi Martha Bateman was born on 1 Feb 1848. She died on 14 May 1920.
+ 151 F vii Margaret Bateman was born on 18 Apr 1850. She died on 30 Jan 1914.
+ 152 M viii Thomas Bateman was born on 20 May 1852. He died on 4 Jan 1886.
+ 153 M ix Charles Bateman was born on 18 Apr 1854. He died on 5 Jul 1931.
+ 154 F x Mary Jane Bateman was born on 23 Jun 1856. She died on 22 Jul 1933.
155 F xi Esther Bateman was born on 3 Aug 1858 in Caradoc Twp, Middlesex County, Canada West. She died on 21 Nov 1899 in Caradoc Twp, Middlesex County, Ontario. She was buried on 23 Nov 1899 in Christ Church, Delaware, Ontario.

Death reg'n #16072--1899: age 41, single, lived Lot 17, R2S; cause of death bronchitis, 4 days; informant Thomas McDonald.
156 M xii John Hales Bateman was born on 26 Aug 1860 in Caradoc Twp, Middlesex County, Canada West. He was christened on 12 May 1861 in Christ Church, Delaware, Canada West. He died on 6 Apr 1883 in Caradoc Twp.. He was buried on 8 Apr 1883 in Christ Church, Delaware, Ontario.
157 F xiii Sarah Ellen Bateman was born on 9 Sep 1862 in Caradoc Twp, Middlesex County, Canada West.
Sarah married 1, 2 Albert Bateman son of John Swanton Bateman and Ellen (Helen) Jennings on 6 Feb 1890 in Christ Church Parsonage, Delaware, Middlesex County, Ontario. Albert was born 3 in Sep 1864 in Gloucester County, New Brunswick. He died on 27 May 1917 in Gloucester County, New Brunswick. He was buried in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Bathurst.

At the time of the 1871 New Brunswick census, Albert (age 7) and Henry S. (age 4) were living with their brother and sister-in-law, William Bateman and Grace Benson (Gloucester County, Bathurst, Div. 3, p.19). Christ Church (Delaware, Ontario) Parish Record of his marriage to Sarah Bateman indicates that Albert was of Big River, Bathurst, New Brunswick. Not known where Albert and Sarah lived after their marriage in 1890. However, on the 1891 census, Albert age 27 is listed with his parents in Bathurst, and is said to be single? In 1894 Albert signed an autograph book for his niece who lived in the Bathurst/Big River area. He wrote:
"Nov. 2nd 1894.
To Miss Emma Bateman
I have A niece which I love dear
And at parting shed A tear
So please dont read this
for you see
I sign my name just,
Albert B.
(Albert Bateman)"
His mention of "parting" seems to suggest he either lived elsewhere and was visiting at the time or he was about to move away. I cannot find him in 1901, but there is an Albert Bateman, born Sept 1864, living in Bathurst in 1911, who would seem to be this man. Then his wife is Mary, and there are several children. Albert Bateman, age 55, died in Gloucester county 27 May 1917 (NB Archives website), but I cannot find death records for either Sarah or Mary, or birth records for the children listed in the 1911 census.
Obituary found during visit to Bathurst: "BATEMAN, Albert of Gloucester Junction died of pneumonia on the 27/ May/ 1917. He lived in Rough Waters and worked for the Caraquet Railroad. He leaves his wife, four daughters, Frances, Elsie, Cora and Doris. Burial was in the Sacred Heart Cemetery."
+ 158 F xiv Catharine Macy Bateman was born on 3 May 1866. She died on 28 Mar 1907.

37. Richard Bateman (Thomas , Charles ) was born in County Cork, Ireland. He was christened 1 on 2 Aug 1815 in Rathclaren Parish, County Cork, Ireland. He died 2 in 1874 in Kansas.

Baptism sponsors were Rowland Bateman, Nicholas Hales (brother or father of Hannah?), and Eliza Leeson [?--last name difficult to read].
Richard Bateman must have been one of the earliest settlers in Middlesex County, Ontario. He filed a petition for 100 acres of land in 1832; duties of settlement were performed and the oath of allegiance taken. Land granted 26 Feb. 1847, Ekfrid Tp, Middlesex County. (Land Petitions C108, v D 1847-48, p. 329; Ekfrid C1639 B 4, 1847-48, pt 2 v 75; petit #184; petit #106; extracted by Emily Smith).
Canadian census records indicate that Richard and Maria lived in Metcalfe Tp, Middlesex County in January 1852 (Concession 12, N 1/2 Lot 10) and Moore Tp, Lambton County in April 1861. Birth locations of children reveal that Richard lived in Canada West until after 1862, then lived in Iowa and on to Kansas by 1867. In Canada he was known to live in Ekfrid Tp, then Metcalfe Tp and finally Moore Tp.
Batmean family reunion notes indicated: "John T. Bateman's brother married Maria Moorhouse [sic]. They once lived on Hugh McKenzie's place."

Obit for Richard Bateman transcribed on Worldconnect:
Richard Bateman b: Ireland settled in Canada. Married Maria Morehead. To Pottawatomie county Grant twp [Kansas] about 1866 d: 1874. Children: Thomas, Robert, Rachael (Mrs. Wallace Groves d: Denver, Colo. 1880), William, Richard and John b: Canada. Charles born Iowa, Wesley born Centralia, Bessie born Grant twp d: 1873, Letitia d: 1898. Thomas d: 1897, Robert d: Denver 18 Sep 1884, William d: Denver Feb 1881, Richard d: Fairplan?, Colo winter of 1879. Rachael married Mr. Groves 1877.

Richard married 1 (1) Caroline Wilson on 12 May 1845 in Christ Church, Delaware, Middlesex County. Caroline died before 1848.

Richard married (2) Maria Moorhead on 24 Apr 1848 in Adelaide Tp, Canada West. Maria was born 1 in 1828 in Ireland. She died 2 on 28 Apr 1920 in Follett, Texas.

1900 Census has Mariah, widow born Ireland 1824, living alone in household next to her son Charles in Pottawatomie county, Kansas. In 1910 she was living with Charles and his family and was said to be 81 years old.

They had the following children:

159 M i Thomas Bateman was born on 10 Feb 1849 in Canada West. He was christened 1 on 26 Sep 1852 in Adelaide Tp, Middlesex County. He died 2 on 29 Jan 1897. He was buried 3 in Havensville Cemetery, Havensville, Kansas.

The Colorado census index for Pueblo county lists both a Thomas Bateman and a Maria Bateman on p. 271 (Ancestry.com index). In 1880 Thomas was listed as the head of a household in Pueblo comprised of his younger brothers John, Charles and Wesley, and a 6 year old sister for whom only the initial "S." was noted.

Cemetery record gives birth date of 1848; however, I think it would be more likely to be 1849. The 1851 census ages were supposed to be the age people would turn at the next birthday, and the official census date was actually 11 January 1852. If the census age was recorded correctly, Thomas would have turned 3 in 1852, and hence been born in 1849. His age at his next birthday according to the 1861 census was also given as 12--again, suggesting he was born in 1849. And finally, his parents married in April 1848. His age in 1880 was listed as 28 years.
160 M ii Robert Bateman was born in 1851 in Canada West. He was christened 1 on 26 Sep 1852 in Adelaide Tp, Canada West. He died 2 on 18 Sep 1884 in Denver, Colorado.

Robert was a 29 year old laborer living with his sister and brother on the 1880 census for Denver, Colorado (p. 342).
+ 161 F iii Rachel Bateman was born in 1854. She died in 1880.
162 M iv William Bateman was born 1 in 1856 in Canada West. He died 2 in Feb 1881 in Denver, Colorado.

William was 24 years old and his occupation was given as: "runs an express wagon" in 1880. He was living with his brother Robert and sister Rachel in Denver.
163 M v Richard Bateman was born 1 in 1859 in Canada West. He died 2 in 1879 in Fairplay, Colorado.
+ 164 M vi John Hales Bateman was born on 8 Mar 1862. He died on 22 May 1951.
+ 165 M vii Charles A. Bateman was born in May 1863.
+ 166 M viii Wesley H. Bateman was born on 2 Jun 1867. He died on 3 Jul 1934.
  167 F ix S. Bateman was born 1 about 1874 in Kansas.

This child was unknown until I found a record of her living with four of her older brothers in Colorado in 1880. Why she was not with her mother is a mystery. She must have died young as family records do not identify her at all.

39. Charles S. Bateman (Swanton , Charles ) was born on 24 Dec 1811 in County Cork, Ireland. He died 1 on 21 Feb 1896 in Holton, Jackson County, Kansas. He was buried on 22 Feb 1896 in Holton Cemetery.

1852 Census in Caradoc Tp, Middlesex County, Upper Canada: BATEMAN Charles, [born] Ire, [religion] E [English Church--i.e., Church of England or Anglican], [age] 41, [resided] Con R5 Lot 5, [occupation] Farmer; Sarah Ire E 37; John H. In 1880 census for Liberty, Jackson County, Kansas, NA Film #T9-0383, p. 54D: Charles age 68, Sarah 67.
Excerpt from notes recorded at a Bateman family reunion held about 1940 near London, Ontario:
"Swanton Chambers told of his trip to Holton, Kansas to visit Grandmother Bateman’s brother Charles’ family. Charles Bateman went to Holton Kansas travelling with two oxen in a covered wagon and leading two cows. It took two years to complete his journey. When leaving his sister, Mary asked him where he was going? He said, “Where no person was living but there would be when he arrived.” Charles had seven sons, three of whom settled near Holton. Edward and George were veterinary surgeons and Robert a farmer who still lives near Holton."
DEATH OF CHARLES BATEMAN
Another one of your pioneer citizens has been called from our midst, and a chapter in the history of our county has been closed. In 1857, just afer the townsite of Holton had been laid out, and before any houses had been erected, Charles Bateman, with his family came to Jackson county, and settled on a piece of prairie two miles north of the then staked out townsite. Here he has lived for the past 39 years, doing his part toward the rapid development of our county. His sons have grown into manhood here, and settled around the old home place, becoming under the trainng of the father useful citizens. The influence of such a pioneer does not cease with his laying down the tools of labor; it goes on for generations.
Charles Bateman was born in Ireland, and was at the time of his death, Friday, February 21, 84 years, 1 month and 23 days old. When two years old his parents emigrated to New Brunswick, where he resided 22 years. He then came to Ohio, living there some 16 years. In this state he was married, his wife living until about a year ago, when she preceded him to the better land. He afterwards removed to Canada, then to Minnesota and Iowa, and in May, 1857 came to Kansas. He had been in very good health for a man of his years, and at the last was only sick some three or four days. The funeral was held at the residence of his son, Edward, with whom he was lately resided, on Saturday, the service being conducted by the Rev. E. F. Holland of the M. E. church, to which the deceased belonged.
He leaves four sons, John Henry, George B., Robert, and Edward S., to mourn the departure of a father, and the whole community in which he lived will miss him." (The Holton Weekly Signal, 28 Feb 1896, p. 8). He was buried on 22 Feb 1896 in Holton Cemetery, Holton, Jackson Co, Kansas.

Charles married 3 Sarah Bateman 1, 2 daughter of Matthew Bateman and Sarah Sutton in 1839 in Coshocton County, Ohio. Sarah was born in 1815 in County Cork, Ireland. She died 4 on 9 Dec 1894 in Jackson County, Kansas.

Henderson (1933) indicated that Sarah and her husband Charles were second cousins. If so, Sarah's father Matthew and Charles' father, Swanton would be first cousins, not brothers.
Sarah's Obituary: "Sarah Bateman was born in Bandon, Ireland, 1815, and died at her home in Jackson county, Kansas, December 9, 1894. Her family emigrated from Ireland when she was about two years old. It required six weeks to make the trip across the Atlantic; and at last landed in St. Johns Harbor, New Brunswick. From there they moved to Fredericktown [sic] where they resided about seventeen years. The family consisted of eight children--two boys and six girls. From this place they moved to Coshocton county, Ohio. She was united in marriage to Charles Bateman in 1839. They remained in Ohio about fourteen years, in which time four children were born to them, namely John Henry, William, George and Thomas. From this home they moved to Canada [Ontario], remaining there about five years. Three other children born to them--Robert, Jane and Edward. In moving from this home they took up their residence in Minnesota, but remained there but six months; and from there they moved to Marion county, Iowa, but remained there but one year, when they came to Kansas, locating in Jackson county, at their present home where they resided until the end of her earthly pilgrimage where, on Sunday last, December 9, 1894, she fell asleep in Jesus, surrounded by her family. The companion of her youth, who now bears the burden of eighty-three years, was still by her side as she passed the swelling of the Jordan to the happy home beyond. With a strong trusting faith, he is pressing on and by and bye will pass beyond the coils of sorrow into the clear light of eternal peace, and join her in the anthems of eternal victory.
"In youth before her marriage, she united with the church, so at last she has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church about sixty years.
"This has been her home for thirty-seven years, and in this residence of over a third of a century you as neighbors have known her as a neighbor, a friend and a member of the church. Cherish all her motherly virtues, emulate every good noble trait, and let your life be better because she lived and may her living and her death help you to see and know more of our heavenly Father's love, and His purposes in your eternal redemption."

They had the following children:

+ 168 M i John Henry Bateman is printed as #68.
+ 169 M ii William S. Bateman is printed as #69.
170 M iii George C. Bateman is printed as #70.
171 M iv Thomas S. Bateman is printed as #71.
+ 172 M v Robert A. Bateman is printed as #72.
173 F vi Jane Bateman is printed as #73.
+ 174 M vii Edward S. Bateman is printed as #74.

41. John Swanton Bateman (Swanton , Charles ) was born about 1815 in New Brunswick. He died on 17 Nov 1901 in Big River (Bathurst), New Brunswick. He was buried 1 on 19 Nov 1901 in Anglican Cemetery, Bathurst.

The 1861 census gives John's age as 40 and for "Where born" says Irish (as contrasted with "Native" or born in NB; p. 94). However, the death certificate for his son William indicates that John was born in Fredericton. He was said to be aged 86 at time of death, but this may not be correct if he was born in New Brunswick. The 1901 census has his birthdate as 1814. I suspect he was born shortly after Swanton arrived in New Brunswick and before they moved to the Bathurst area. John's tombstone has his death in 1903, but the burial record in the parish register and the provincial death registration both indicate he died in 1901.

John married 1 Ellen (Helen) Jennings daughter of John Jennings on 4 May 1841 in Bathurst Parish, New Brunswick. Ellen was born 2 in 1823 in County Cork, Ireland. She died 3 on 10 May 1893 in New Brunswick. She was buried 4 on 12 May 1893 in St. George's Anglican Church, Bathurst, Gloucester County, New Brunswick.

Tombstone gives dates of 1823 - 1893; church record indicates died at age 71.

They had the following children:

+ 175 M i William Swanton Bateman was born on 9 Apr 1842. He died on 28 Nov 1923.
+ 176 F ii Mary Bateman was born on 17 Oct 1844. She died on 6 Apr 1908.
177 M iii John Bateman was born 1 about 1848 in Gloucester County, NB.

Must have died very young. Placement a guess! Not listed in 1861 census.
+ 178 M iv Swanton Bateman was born in 1851. He died in Jun 1885.
179 M v Charles Bateman was born 1 about 1853 in Gloucester County, NB.

Not listed in 1861 census. Must have died very young. Placement a guess!
180 M vi Henry Bateman was born 1 on 10 Sep 1856 in Gloucester County, NB. He was christened on 30 Sep 1856.

Age 5 in January 1861 census. There is another Henry on later census born 1868. This child must have died young.
181 M vii Henry Bateman was born on 2 Nov 1861 in Bathurst. He was christened 1 on 18 Mar 1862.

IGI film #1761089 has Henry as son of William and Grace Benson. However, I am confident this is not correct as my source is Laura Bateman Doherty, daughter of William and Grace, and niece of Henry.
+ 182 M viii Albert Bateman was born in Sep 1864. He died on 27 May 1917.
183 M ix Henry Samuel Bateman was born 1 on 30 Jun 1867 in Gloucester County, New Brunswick. He was christened 2 on 29 Jun 1867 in St. George's Anglican Church, Bathurst, New Brunswick. He died in Nov 1941 in Maine. He was buried 3 in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Bangor, Maine.

Sam was a resident of Bathurst Parish at the time of his marriage. In 1901 he and Elizabeth lived in Bathurst. Other members of the household were his father, and three nephews: Wallace (William Walllace) 17, Harry (Henry) 15, both sons of Swanton and Catherine, and Wilfrid Arthur, also 15. After his wife's death he evidently moved to Maine and was killed there when he was struck by an automobile when walking down the middle of a highway late at night. The accident occurred the Saturday before 16 November (obituary dated 16 November). "Bateman, an employee of the Jordan Lumber company in Old Town, had resided in Bangor for the past 3 years. He was visiting at the home of John Coltigan, Sr., and was returning from the village to the house when the accident occurred. . . . bearers were John Costigan, Sr., John Ramsey, George Taylor, Elmer Batemen." Sam and Elizabeth had no children.
Henry married 4 Elizabeth Norton 1, 2, 3 on 24 Oct 1900 in St. George's Anglican Church, Bathurst, New Brunswick. Elizabeth was born 5 on 12 Mar 1871 in New Brunswick. She died on 21 Mar 1937 in South Bathurst, New Brunswick. She was buried 6 on 23 Mar 1937 in St. George's Anglican Church, Bathurst, New Brunswick.

Resident of New Bandon parish at time of marriage. Burial record: "Mrs. Samuel Bateman, aged 73, of South Bathurst died on March 23, 1937" (St. George's Anglican Church, Bathurst). Elizabeth died at the home of Mrs. William Watson of South Bathurst after a long illness. She was survived "by her husband, for some years a resident of Bangor, Maine."

42. Mary Bateman (Swanton , Charles ) was born on 10 Apr 1820 in Gloucester County, New Brunswick.

Mary married 1 John Thomas Bateman son of Thomas Bateman and Hannah (Anne) Hales on 25 Aug 1836 in Bathurst, New Brunswick. John was born in Sep 1813 in County Cork, Ireland. He was christened 2 on 21 Nov 1813 in Rathclaren Parish, County Cork, Ireland.

43. Jane Bateman 1 (Swanton , Charles ) was born about 1823 in New Brunswick. She died in 1856 in Iowa.

Birthdate unknown--probably born in New Brunswick. Jane died while she and her family were travelling with the family of her brother Charles on their way to a new home. In 1856 the Iowa state census records Mathew and their daughter Jane living with the Parrotts, Mary and Elizabeth living with the Batemans, and Thomas, the youngest, living with another family, all in Marion county, Iowa. The families finally settled near Holton Kansas in 1857.

Jane married 1 Matthew Smith on 6 Feb 1844 in Bathurst, New Brunswick. Matthew was born about 1820 in Ireland. He died in 1859 in Kansas.

"Tragedy followed tragedy in the Uncle Smith home and now one night the father disappeared leaving the four children. He was never seen and his whereabouts never known. The children came to live with Grandfather and Grandmother. A few years later tragedy called again, this time little Jane was the victim. Playing near the fireplace her clothing caught on fire and she was so badly burned that she passed away." (Mary Luella Bateman Johnson, in the Holton Recorder, September 22, 1947).
Estate record for Matthew Smith included a receipt for burial expenses dated 18 August 1859 (Kathie Simon).

They had the following children:

198 F i Jane Smith was born 1 about 1845 in New Brunswick. She died before 1860 in Kansas.

Jane evidently died before 1859 as she was not named in the records of her father's estate filed in 1859.

+ 200 F iii Elizabeth Smith was born on 6 May 1848.

Lived N 1/12 Lot 12 N LW Rd. Will of Edward's cousin, Catherine Bateman (Mrs. John P. Bateman), left Edward $500, which was then revoked and bequeathed to his wife, Margaret. Edward died at age 72 years, retired farmer. Obituary in Strathroy Age (4 December 1890, p.8), indicates Edward was born in Ireland. Death reg'n #10017--1890: farmer, 72 years old, born Ireland, cause of death kidney disease 1 week; informant Wm Francis of Caradoc tp.

Edward married 1 Margaret Francis on 10 Dec 1845 in Christ Church, Delaware, Ontario. Margaret was born on 21 Dec 1826 in Caradoc Twp, Middlesex County, Upper Canada. She died on 22 Apr 1909 in Strathroy, Middlesex County, Ontario. She was buried 2 in Oakland Cemetery, Delaware, Ontario.

Parish record indicates: son of Edward Bateman born and baptized 26 July 1846, by John Gunn, Missionary. Not certain that this child was son of Edward and Margaret Francis--no such child listed in 1852 census.
203 M ii Henry Bateman was born on 15 Feb 1849 in Caradoc Twp, Middlesex County, Canada West. He died on 9 Oct 1871 in Caradoc Twp, Middlesex County, Ontario. He was buried 1 in Oakland Cemetery, Delaware, Ontario.
