[Transcribed by Florence Huff Haggerty from originals; originals photocopied and checked by Sharon Haggerty]

First Document-1766 Petition to the Bishop of Cork and Ross concerning the Kilmeen parish clerk:

To the honorable Right Reverend Father in God Thomas St. Lawrence, Bishop of Cork and Ross Palace-- Memorial of James Hagerty, Junior, of Kilmeen Sheweth to your Lordship

That Memorialists Father James Hagertie Senior, now 84 years old is Lisenced as Church Clerk for the parish of Kilmeen 56 years, that his Father, Grandfather and all his Ancesters in a hereditary Line since the Reign of King William have officiated as Church Clerks in the respective Parishes of Kilmeen and Ballimony, as by the Records and Registry may appear. Memorialists Father being now superannuated and a vacancy for both Church Clerk and School Master being in said parish at present, Memst. humbly conceives himself fit for both and entitled at least to the office of Church Clerk according to your Lordships Pleasure and goodwill as his Father and Ancesters have been in succession Church Clerks since the Conquest. Your Lordships goodness in appointing Memorialist will be also a Comsumate [sic?] Act of Charity as he is a poor honest industrious young man with a heavy charge of a wife and five children and nothing to support them but his labor. We most earnestly implore your Lordships Humanity and Distinguished Goodness to appoint him to the office so long filled by his ancesters with Propriety. Memorialist will never cease to invoke Heaven for the continued welfare and Prosperity of your Lordship and most worthy family, etc., etc. We the undersigned Proestants [sic?] of the parish of Killmeen recommend Bearer, James Hagertie to your Lordship as a proper man for the office of Church Clerk of said Parish.

Sixth Document: [This document was not included in the Haggerty family books written by Florence Haggerty in the 1940s, probably because she did not want to reveal that James had lost his farm. I am only guessing this document was written by James Haggertie–there was no signature attached. However, according to the Kilmeen baptism records for the children of James and Anne, they lived in Kildee in April 1813, but in April 1815, July 1821, October 1823 and September 1825 they were living in an adjacent townland, Ballygurteen.]

Take Notice that on the 29th day of September next I shall surrender and give up to you the quiet & peaceful pofsefsion of the Houses & Farm at Kildee with the appurtenances there unto belonging which I now hold from you as Tenant at will and I hereby require you to attend on said Land on the aforesaid 29th of September next in order to receive the pofsefsion of the said Houses & Farm, as after said day I shall leave the same to be disposed of by you as you think fit & shall no longer hold myself accountable to you for any rent. Given under my Hand Present. this day of March 1815.

We the undersigned, the Minister and Church wardens of the Parish of Kilmeen in the County of Cork certify that we have known James Hagertie of this Parish, Farmer and Weaver, for many years, that he has always been well-conducted and industrious and is, as we understand going to Canada to seek a Settlement his trade here having failed, and the lease of his farm expired.
