Zenie Zenevich's Story

Army, Recipient DOW 12/14/1944. The 77th Army division most effective division in the whole Pacific theater. The Statue of Liberty Division, they were called. They were by the way, made up mostley of draftees, not career people. That's why Ernie Pyle elected to be with them. Also Awarded: Bronze Star metal. Filling out papers for the Bronze Star Metal. The Bronze Star may be awarded posthumously and may be presented to a representative of the deceased if appropriate. Also received marksmanship awards.


Robert G. Zierer's Story

Army, Robert was born and raised in Park Falls, Wisconsin and graduated from Lincoln High in May 1950. He entered the US Army under selective service and after training as an artillery observer (MOS: 1844) was assigned to the 235th Art Bn (OBS) in Korea. He became a prisoner of war on the date he was wounded while in conflict with the enemy. He was released during the POW exchange period on 25 Aug 1953.


Luther Bernard Zimmerman's Story

Article in local Galesburg, IL., Newspaper on August 29, 1950 "KILLED IN ACTION - Pfc Bernard Zimmerman, 18, of near Abingdon was killed in action Aug 15 in Korea, his family has learned. (One of those dreaded telegrams.) He had written his father, Luther Zimmerman, of near Abingdon, August 1, "Don't worry about me, Dad, I know how to keep my head down." The youth was the ninth Korean war casualty from the Galesburg area."


Rocco Michael Zuccarella's Story

Army, My father, Rocco Michael Zuccarella, received the Silver Star on March 17, 1945, for gallentry in action that had occurred on March 5, 1945. The write-up from the Army states: under intense enemy fire, Sergeant Zuccarella covered members of his platoon with machine gun fire while they took cover. He then advanced 800 yards under machine gun, artillery, mortar and small arms fire to lead twelve men to safety. I am very proud of my father.


Christ E. Zurek's Story

In addition to Christ receiving the Purple Heart, he was also awarded Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, American Campaign Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged from the Marine Corp. as a Corporal.
