South Caroliniana Society University of South Carolina Greene Street Columbia, South Carolina 29208 Tel: (803)777-5183 Fax: (803)777-5747 The University South Caroliniana Society actively collects, preserves, and encourages research in materials documenting the history of the Palmetto State. The Society promotes research via its publications, meetings, and annual programs. Our name, "Caroliniana," uses the Latin suffix to signify "things pertaining to Carolina." The Society formed in 1937 at the invitation of University of South Carolina president J. Rion McKissick and the University Caroliniana committee. Concerned by the removal and dispersal of valuable historical documents to locations outside the state, McKissick and the committee resolved to increase the holdings of the University's South Carolina collection. With completion of a new library facility in 1940, the University removed the general library holdings to the new McKissick Memorial Library, now McKissick Museum. This allowed continued growth of the South Carolina collection in the old library building. To assure the permanence of its work, the Society was incorporated in 1951. Since that time the Society has functioned as the private non-profit organization of the South Caroliniana Library with the sole purpose of supporting the Library in its mission. From pre-colonization to the present, there are the writings of governors, generals, poets, farmers, and merchants; the letters and diaries of women, soldiers, and travellers; the research of historians and genealogists and the records of plantations and churches. Call to confirm that the Research Library will be open before planning extended research trips to the Society. Box 11353 Columbia, SC 29211-1353 In honor of South Carolina's 210th birthday, the Columbia Chapter of the South Carolina Genealogical Society (SCGS) is sponsoring this new heritage program. To qualify for membership the applicant must directly descend from an ancestor who settled in South Carolina prior to May 23, 1788. The applicant must be able to prove descent from the ancestor (male or female) by an acceptable record or records for each generation, including proof for the applicant. Current South Carolina Residency is not a requirement. The information that applicants furnish as proof of their lineage will be placed in the archives of the Columbia Chapter of the SCGS. There it will serve as a valuable resource for other researchers and genealogists. The collection will be a valuable addition to the history of South Carolina and a source of information and pride for future generations. Applicants who qualify and are admitted to membership will receive a handsomely designed certificate issued by the Columbia Chapter of the SCGS featuring the applicant's name and the name of the appplicant's ancestor. Publication: Transactions of the Huguenot Society of South Carolina The society was established in 1885 and is dedicated to the preservation of the history and genealogy of the members of the Protestant Reformation which took place in France during the 16th century. The society maintains a library offering resources for historical research and tracing of Huguenot ancestry. A qualified librarian/archivist, genealogist, and registrar are available to offer assistance. Members of the society as well as the public are invited to use the library facility during business hours. A nominal fee is charged for use of the library by non-members.
