SCRoots Email Subscription Instructions

SCRoots EMAIL SERVICES

SCRoots is the online meeting place for discussions and sharing of information about South Carolina genealogy and related history. In addition to the Email Forums, participants have access to live chat, web pages, archives, guestbooks, message boards, customized search forms, and other useful features available for SCRoots subscribers. 1. SCRoots-L and SCRoots-D.

These are our Flagship email services hosted at Rootsweb.com. The SCRoots Forums at Rootsweb are restricted to text only messages on the topic of South Carolina genealogy and related history. You must be a subscriber to participate and subscriptions are free. To join or quit the SCRoots-L or SCRoots-D Email discussions just send an Email message with the word SUBSCRIBE or UNSUBSCRIBE as the only text in the body of a message to [email protected] for mail mode or to [email protected] for digest mode (NOT to [email protected]). No subject line is necessary, but if your email program wants one, just use subscribe or unsubscribe in the subject also. As long as you remain on the subscriber list, you will receive messages from the Forum. To quit the list, send an UNSUBSCRIBE message as explained above.

After you have subscribed to the Forum you may send and receive messages with the Forum members. To send messages to all the Forum participants, address your messages to [email protected] NOT [email protected] AND NOT [email protected]. The address with "-request" is for subscription actions, not for message posting.

2. SCRoots-Lite.

Some folks have problems with long messages. They want only short messages and cringe when long transcribed texts arrive in their inbox. To satisfy the preferences of these SCRooters we have created this "Lite" version of our email services. SCRoots-Lite is for shorter text messages only (about 5k or 60 lines or less). Transcriptions and long messages (60+ lines) are not acceptable in SCRoots-Lite. The topic of SCRoots-Lite is genealogy and related history for South Carolina. SCROOTS-LITE IS RESTRICTED TO SHORT TEXT ONLY EMAIL. Messages with HTML, RTF, attachments, or other non-text formats are not acceptable in SCRoots-Lite. Messages in SCRoots-Lite are archived by the Forum. The default "Reply-To" is back to the sender, but users can always manually change the addressing of replies. 3. SCRoots-Chat.

Sometimes you just want to chat. But, chatting is not allowed in our genealogy areas. To satisfy your chat urges without irritating our "serious" minded genealogists, SCRoots has created SCRoots-Chat where SCRooters can do email chatting till they drop. The SCRoots-Chat email service is not limited to the topic of genealogy. Members may use this forum for polite, non-commercial, public email chatting on any topic. Messages in SCRoots-Chat are not archived by the Forum. The default "Reply-To" is back to SCRoots-Chat, but users can always manually change the addressing of replies. 4. SC-Genealogy.

Some people want to send attachments and HTML coded email messages. This is not allowed at Rootsweb. So, SCRoots has setup this special email service to accommodate this need. SC-Genealogy is used by SCRoots members for sending messages with HTML or attachments. SC-Genealogy is restricted to discussions and information regarding South Carolina genealogy and related history. Messages in SC-Genealogy may be archived by the Forum. The default "Reply-To" is back to the sender, but users can always manually change the addressing of replies. Messages with HTML, RTF, attachments, or other non-text ARE ALLOWED in [email protected]. 5. [email protected]

This service operates under the same policies and guidelines as the SCRoots email services at Rootsweb. It is useful for people with an @Yahoo email address or others that may not function properly at our Rootsweb servers. [email protected] is restricted to plain text email only. Messages with HTML, RTF, attachments, or other non-text formats are not acceptable in [email protected]. Messages in [email protected] are archived by the Forum. A Few Common Problems.

Sometimes messages are rejected because the sender, or their Internet Service Provider, has slightly changed their email address or the configuration in their email program. For example, you may have subscribed when your email address was [email protected], but it may have changed to [email protected] dropping the "mail" from the address. Little changes like this cause the server to not recognize you as a subscriber. Or, you might have added some extra characters in the email address which are confusing the Forum server. You can always find out what address you are subscribe under by examining the FULL message header in any email sent to you under the subscribed address.

If something like that happened, try to temporarily change your address back to what it was, and unsubscribe using the old address. Then, change the address back to the new version and resubscribe. This should make the server recognize you at the new address and stop sending mail to the old address.

Another possible cause of problems is having HTML mode turned on in your email program or having "signatures" or "cards" attached to your messages. Try turning these features off.

If you can't solve the problem using the methods described above, and maybe a little trial and error, then send the Forum Manager a message describing what is happening. Include information about both your old and new email addresses, if there has been a change. Personal actions such as this often take 24-72 hours or more to receive attention.
