In her time, she belted an ax, followed a plow, sheared sheep and carded wool, stood at the spinning wheel and sat at the loom. She was a shoemaker, a tanner, a cross maker, a miller, a farmer, a herb doctor, a nurse, a quilt-maker, a breeder of horses and cattle, a swapper, or anything else that the occasion might demand. She came this way when the land was a virgin wilderness and she lived long enough to have her picture taken. Her wrinkled face looks steadily out at you, from a worn frame -- an old folks' face, by then fierce in it's honesty. The hands, resting at last in the lap, the fingers gnarled and callused from a lifetime's of labor. The picture, now a treasured possession of her 81 year-old great-grandson Fred Wood, was made shortly before her death in 1910 at the age of 92. "She was born Catherine Katie Setzer in 1818 in Lincoln County," Wood recalled one day this week. "Her mother died when she was three or four years old and she brought up by her Grandfather and Grandmother Tars. "In 1828, the year Macon County was created, the family pulled up stakes and came pioneering in the mountain for new land." "Katie was about 15 years old and she rode horseback all the way to Macon County where Tarr took up a tract of land the and the family camped out while he and the boys felled trees and grooved together a log house." "In 1834, she married William Holbrooks and they built themselves a log house in the Holly Springs section where she game him nine children." "She was left a widow in 1857, with several small children to provide for. She moved from Holly Springs to a place on Walnut Creek that became known as Katie Creek." "She farmed and raised horses and cattle and sheep and hogs to make a living for her children. She worked the fields, planting and raising crops, and spun and wove all their clothes. She even tanned hides and made their shoes." "She was known as quite a swapper. When the Civil War came on she picked up quite a few fine farmes by swapping horses and wagons to families that were moving out in the mountains to Tennessee to keep from fighting in the war. She made a fortune. She swapped one fellow a team of horses and a wagon for more that 100 acres of land, a house and all the furnishings. Later she sold it for cash." "In her time she swapped and traded and bought up hundreds of acres of land. But she never would part with her place on Katie Creek." "She kept as many as a hundred head of hogs and a great number of cows. She milked the cows and churned and made butter and cheese. She rode horseback to sell the butter and cheese at Corundum Hill and in Franklin." "She wouldn't allow a man to plow her garden until after she was 60 years old. Said she didn't want a man's heavy shoes walking on the ground where she planted her garden." "She raised everything, corn and every vegetable grown back then. And she had a long row of currant bushes just inside the paling fence around the garden. My father and some of the other grandchildren used to tell how they would sneak out and reach through the fence and pick the rip currants when she wasn't looking." "She had a section for helps in the garden and she gathered a lot of wild ones to doctor the children and others with. She had the reputation of being a fine herb doctor and was never known to fail to go when somebody was ill or needed help." "In addition to her own children she helped raise several grandchildren and she also took in an orphan girl and raised her. She had two sons in the Civil War. One was wounded and he died shortly after he came home." "As long as she lived, she never wore any storebought clothes. She made them out of homespun. And over the many handwoven petticoats she wore a long homespun dress that reached the ground. A long apron was always a part of her dress and nobody ever remembered seeing her without her homespun apron." "She also wore an old-time cape around her shoulders. And her shoes were homemade. She smoked both corncob and clay pies as long as she lived." "She had a pipe mold that she made her clay pipes in. She got her clay -- white clay, it was -- from a place near a cave that war off beyond the house. In the wintertime, she would sit before the fire and smoke her pipe. In the summer, she would smoke it out on the porch." "She slept on a corded poster bed. She used handwoven sheets and blankets and handmade quilts she had turned out herself." "She had white curtains around the bed that reached the floor. Apples were scarce in the winter back when I was coming on and she kept her apples under the bed. I remember when I was eight or nine years old, me and another great-grandchild crawled under the bed and founded ourselves on apples. She discovered us and came after us with her walking stick and run us out." "She never owned a cookstove. She cooked on the hearthfire until she was 91. She kept her iron pots and pans hanging by the fireplace." "She kept her flax wheel, reel, spinning wheel, wheel cards, flax hackle, winding blades, warping bars, and loom as long as she kept house and used them all until just a few years before her death." "She made all her soap, lard, vinegar, and candles. She dried and pickled her food for winter. She bought few things at the store. But one thing she did buy regularly and that was brown sugar. She bought a lot of it and she saved the lumps in it to give to the grandchildren and great-grandchildren." "Always when I would gather dry brush for her to kindle her fire with, she would give me some lumps of brown sugar. It was better than getting a stick of peppermint candy." "From the time she came to the mountains until she died, she never lived in anything except a log house." Fred Wood sat a moment looking at the picture of his great-grandmother, "You know," he said, "they don't make 'em like her any more." ------------------------------------------------------------ Photograph of headstone by Christopher E.
