Personal records of Phillip Hogsed, dated May 1998:
- The following was related by J. Walter Moore in an article in the Clay County Progress on July 23, 1992. Abner Moore was one of the first men to settle at the head of Shooting Creek, North Carolina in 1825. He entered the land beginning at the Sam Hogsed farm, all the way to Rainbow Springs. He purchased the land for 50 cents per acre and there were thousands of acres stretching 15 to 20 miles. This is where he and his wife "Cook" raised their 12 children. J. Walter said that the 1852 census, Abner, along with six slaves produced 1,000 bushels of corn that he cultivated with a bull-tongue plough. Abner had 100 head of cattle, 100 hogs, 50 sheep, and 10 mules. The census 10 years later reported the figures remained about the same. It was told to J. Walter that Abner sold out all his belongings around 1880 to the Penland family for $8,000 in gold. He took that, along with another $8,000 in gold he had saved and returned to Tennessee where he was born.
