CIVIL WAR: KILBY, THORNTON, 31, Farmer, 1860 GCC HH#1116, Grayson Militia, County. C, 63rd Virginia Inf., Enl. 5/15/62 at Wytheville. Pres. in arrest 10/63 muster. Deserted 7/2/64, taken POW 7/3/64, sent to Camp Douglas 7/14/64. Released on 5/17/65. Claimed to have been loyal & deserted to avail himself of the amnesty proclamation. Res. Grayson County., Fair comp., brown hair, blue eyes, 5'9".
Camp DouglasÑestablished originally for the training of Illinois volunteers. The 60-acre area served also as a prison camp after the fall f Ft. Donelson. Its total number of Confederate prisoners was 30,000. Located to the south of Chicago, it was dismanteled in November, 1865.

- Thornton Kilby and Pheobe Weaver's home property and the graveyard are in Grayson County., Va., exactly on the state line north of Ashe County. It's possible their graveyard got counted in the North Carolina listing, but it's geographically not part of the state and could be confusing if someone is actually trying to find it. Also, it's impossible to see it from the public road Parents: Reuben KILBY and Anne JONES.
