- Served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, while spouse Rutha and their sons stayed on the farm in Jackson County, North Carolina. Died from Influenza while stationed at Strawberry Plains, Tennessee near Knoxville. His unit was guarding the strategic railroad trestle there. He was a member of the Thomas Legion, County. G, 62nd North Carolina Infantry. After his death, his brother Thomas, also a confederate soldier, wrapped his body in a tarpaulin and carried it on mule back across the Smoky Mountains to Jackson County, North Carolina Parents: Richard Henry JONES Sr. and Nancy HIGDON.
