- Family tradition has it that the above information is accurate. A license
for marriage was acquired by William F. Holbrook in 1895. On the date of the
wedding he showed up drunk and Eva Higdon refused to marry him. In those days
once a marriage license was issued the parties involved could not marry anyone
else. William Holbrook carried this license in his back pocket for 13 years
before the actual wedding finally took place.

Obituary from The Franklin Press, Macon County, North Carolina, dated November 7, 1986:
Mr. Holbrook
Alex L. Holbrook, 75 of Clarks Chapel R., Franklin, died Wednesday, Nov 5, in Angel Community Hospital after a period of declining health.
He was a native of Macon County, son of the late William F. and Eva A. Higdon Holbrook. He was a retired carpenter and was of Baptist Faith.
He is survived by his wife, Kate Conley Holbrook; a daughter, Margaret Elizabeth Cotey of the home; a son William L. Holbrook of Clayton, Ga.; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Bryant Funeral Home. Officiating ministers were Rev. Melvin Brooks and Dr. George Clary. Burial was in Coweeta Cemetery. Pallbearers were Frank L. Crisp, Bill Conley, Wilbur Ledbetter, Noel Talley, Charles Stiles and Garland Bateman.
