Mrs. Holbrooks, Former Teacher, Dies Saturday
Mrs. Eva Higdon Holbrooks, a Macon County native and former teacher, died Saturday at 1:30 a.m. at her home in the Hickory Knoll community.
Eighty-three years old, she had been ill for seven months. Widow of William F. Holbrooks, she taught schools here for 20 years.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the Hickory Knoll Methodist Church by the Rev. R. L. Poindexter, assisted by the Rev. Claude Ledford. Burial was in the Cowetta Baptist Church cemetery.
Mrs. Holbrooks was the daughter of the late W. W. and Mrs. Jane Moore Higdon. She and Mr Holbrooks were married Jan. 29, 1908. He died in 1951. She was a member of the Sugarfork Baptist Church.
Mrs. Holbrooks is survived by two sons, Alex of Hickory Knoll and John Holbrooks, of Brevard; three sisters, Mrs. Bertha McDowell, of Dillard, Ga., Route 1, Mrs. Walter Gibson, of Franklin, Route 3, and Mrs C. W. Vanhook, of Clyde; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Serving as pallbearers were Rimer L. Hoglen, Elmer Roten, Charles and Frank Stiles, Gene Bateman, and Edward Giles.
Potts Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Parents: William Washington "Big" HIGDON and Lydia Jane MOORE.

- Family tradition has it that the above information is accurate. A license
for marriage was acquired by William F. Holbrook in 1895. On the date of the
wedding he showed up drunk and Eva Higdon refused to marry him. In those days
once a marriage license was issued the parties involved could not marry anyone
else. William Holbrook carried this license in his back pocket for 13 years
before the actual wedding finally took place.

Geneva Higdon
Geneva Clarine Higdon, 80, of Sunrise Park, Sylva, died Saturday, June 25, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 27, in Parris Cemetery.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she enjoyed reading, doing yard work, and listening to bluegrass and gospel music. She was the last surviving child of the late Robert Lee and Maude Young Higdon.
She was also preceded in death by one sister, Mae Higdon Morgan; and seven other siblings.
Surviving are one foster brother, Ralph Womack of Sylva.
Memorials may be made to WestCare Home Health and Hospice, 132 Sylva Plaza, Sylva, N.C. 28779; or Fanconia Anemia Research Fund, 1801 Willamette St., #200, Eugene, OR 97401; or the charity of one’s choice.

Farmer dies of Apoplexy
J. Caswell Higdon Stricken While Walking Near His Home
Funeral services for J. Caswell Higdon, 48 year-old farmer of the Higdonville section who died of a stroke of apoplexy near his home last Thrusday morning, were held Friday morning at 11 o'clock at the Sugar Fork Baptist church.
The Rev. B.W. Lefler, pastor, the Franklin Methodist circuit, officiated. Mill Shoal council, Junior Order of United American Mechanics, had charge of the service at the grave.. Pallbearers were Wade Berry, Harley Stewart, Dude Berry, Fred Corbin and John Corbin.
Mr. Higdon had been visiting his aunt, Mrs. Harriet Higdon, two miles north of his home, and was returning when he suffered the stroke. He was about 300 yards from his home at the time. The body was discovered by a neighbor, Alfred Team.
Mr. Higdon lived with a brother, William, besides whom he is survived by four sisters, Mrs. W.H. Berry, Mrs. J.J. Corbin, Mrs. Charles Potts and Mrs. Lee Dills.
