Little Ellijay in the Early Days

Tom Henry has lived in mountain community for 91 years

By Danita Stoudemire
Features Editor

Tom Henry has spent his entire life on Little Ellijay, all 91 years of it.
Of course, back when he was young things were quite different in the mountains of the Little Ellijay Community. Tom, a pleasant man who has kept his sense of humor through the years, was born on Little Ellijay, Dec. 18, 1911, to Carrie and Jake W. Henry.
Carrie Moses was born on Rocky Branch in Little Ellijay and Jake was born in Eden Valley in Ellijay. Tom was one of their 13 children.
He was 11 years old before he made his first trip to the town of Franklin. It was a long way to town from Little Ellijay, but you could walk there and back in a day if you walked fast enough Tom said.
Like folks typically did in the early days, Tom's family raised most of their food. They didn't have a tractor, but they did have horses, mules and steers to do the work. "We raised corn and taters where it was too steep to plow," he recalled. "We raised it with a hoe."
Tom enjoys telling stories about his childhood and it is apparent that he had a good life. He said in those days there was lots of time to do nothing and like most boys, he and his brothers had to be made to work.
He had a lot of good times at school, especially at recess. The Little Ellijay School sat on top of a small hill and, according to Tom, didn't have much of a schoolyard. An old sawmill was next door so the kids had to cross over a pile of logs to get into the school. There were two "cloak rooms" inside the door of the school where the children could put their dinner. On the upper side, he explained, there was a little porch. They had lots of rubber balls to bounce off the walls, but that was about the limit of their play until some of the parents got together and dug out a place wide enough for them to play basketball.
They only had the one big ball for basketball, and the older kids usually played with it. But Tom remembers one day they let him and the younger kids play with it. One of the boys had long fingernails and poked a hole in the ball. "It sure made the older kids mad," Tom laughed.
Tom and his siblings had to walk three miles to school. "Of course we took near cuts," he said, "so it would be a little closer."
School began the first Monday of July and ended at Christmas. Ellijay School had the smartest bunch of kids I ever seen at spelling," Tom said. They even beat Higdonville School in a spelling bee one time.
There were eight boys and five girls in Tom's family, 11 of them lived to be grown, but Tom is the last of them. His brother Fred got a seventh grade diploma. "I learned my multiplication table pretty well," Tom said. "But I never got no diploma."
"I stayed home to drive a little team of mules to pull out phone poles. Daddy wouldn't write me an excuse to leave school and the teacher wouldn't let me go. So I just left and never went back."
He left his home on Little Ellijay only one time. "Right before I got married, me and Howard Keener went 75 miles yon side of Knoxville to work. They were building a tunnel big enough for a train to go through. While I was standing there watching, five tons of rock fell in. I made up my mind right then to come back home."
Tom had met Pearly Cardulia Dills at church and they were married on Nov. 23, 1935. Together they had five children. Tom's voice lowered as he looked away and spoke of his three-year-old son that died in his arms of diphtheria. "He was one of the sweetest little boys I ever seen," Tom said softly.
It was a sad time for the small community, which lost four or five kids at that time to diphtheria. Tom and Pearly's daughter, Edith, had the dreaded disease too, but she pulled through and is still living today.
After Tom "got grown," he worked in the mica and corundum mines on Little Ellijay.
"I worked last cleaning out old mining holes. I liked it, but it was dangerous work. I worked first in a mine about a mile up the road. Me and Jess Tyler went up to the mines one morning. We felt the wind from a rock that fell down from the top. It just jarred the tunnel 'cause we had it timbered good. We was 75 foot deep back into the tunnel. I didn't have time to be scared it happened so fast."
Besides working in the mines, Tom picked apples making $1.50 a day, $9 for six days.
"It's not like it used to be up here," Tom said. "Chestnut trees have blighted and died. Apple trees were so good that we had apples go to waste. Every time an apple tree would come up, we'd plant it someplace else. We had all sorts of apple sweets. 'Big Sweets' we called 'em. All the peach trees blighted. There were grapevines everywhere on Little Ellijay."
Besides all the bountiful fruit that grew in the community, Tom's family raised hogs and a "good tomato patch. One of Tom's favorite pastimes is singing and according to him, his mother was the "best singer of the bunch."
"When I was little, about 12, we was digging tators and I was listening to Daddy and them singing on the porch. 'Come help us sing Tom,' Daddy said. I told him no and he said, 'then go on back out in the tater patch.'"
To learn a new song all Tom had to do was listen to somebody else sing it first, then he could sing it. "True Blue Bill" is a song that he thought he had forgotten and then, he said, one day it just came back to him. "Just as the Sun went Down" is his favorite song. It's about the crucifixion of Jesus.
Tom's faith in God is strong and he is licensed to be a minister though he never preached, but taught Sunday school for awhile.
"One time I went into Franklin to subscribe to The Press. It was below Angel Drug Store then. Fifty cents was all I had in my pocket when I came out of The Press office. There was a man sittin' on the running board of a car and both of his legs was broke below the knees and his mouth was a working.
Tom thought for a moment as if still seeing the man, then he continued. "I don't know, God must have told me to give him that last 50 cents. So I gave it to him and he went right up around the drug store, to Fred Arnold's and got something to eat. When he came back out, a man I knowed well gave him a dollar or two. He went in the drug store and got him a bus ticket. Then he got on the bus and left. I always thought that was the best 50 cents I ever spent."
Again he paused as if deep in thought. "He was sitting there a praying, I guess when I first seen him. I know I would have been."
Tom says that in a way the good old days were really good. But in a way they wasn't. "There was lots of things we didn't have and couldn't get," he said.
Tom has six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Pearl died about four years ago and Tom still lives in his home on Little Ellijay.
"Don't look for nothing easier than it is now," Tom said, as he crossed his hands across the bib of his overalls. "Cause soon the Lord will come back and take his children home."
