Sidney Nelson Baldwin

The death of Sidney Nelson Baldwin last week saddened his many friends and relatives, here and elsewhere. Those, who knew Nelson best were unanimous in their praise of him as a great Ashe county citizen, who was keenly interested in the growth and development of this area.
Of all the projects he was probably more keenly interested in education. For 25 years he was a member of the Lansing school board. During the late forties he headed up the Trade School, teaching students to be proficient in construction work.
His record in World War I is a fine example of his patrotism. He never lost interest in his country. He was the organizer of the Lansing Legion Post, the first in this county.
As long as he was able he carried sick people to hospitals. He was truly a good neighbor to all who knew him and will long be remembered.

Memorial To Nelson Baldwin

Sidney Nelson Baldwin, the son of Mr. Jesse and Mrs. Anna Caroline Kilby Baldwin was born in the Piney Creek section of Ashe County on July 4, 1896; he passed away on August 21, 1975 in The Ashe County Memorial Hospital after a long pilgrimage of 79 years, one month, and 17 days.
He was married to Miss Eva Bell Hudler in July or August, 1923. They were married in Trade, Tennessee. The witnesses were Ed Jones and Mr. Baldwins sister, Mrs. Mollie Baldwin Jones. Mr. and Mrs. Byrum Graybeal accompanied the couple.
He has been a resident of Piney Creek and Lansing all of his life except the time he was in Germany in World War I.
Mr Baldwin was an expert carpenter and an excellent concrete finisher. He was an unusual character. His was a heart of gold. After his induction in World War I on August 9, 1918 he spent 13 days in basic training and was sent to Germany for the rest of his army career.
He was given an Army Serial number 4069872, which he probably carried in his memory until August 21. He was a member of the 56th infantry, He was engaged in the Neuse-Argonne battles. He was awarded medals, badges, citations and the bronze Star Victory medal. His discharge gave him an excellent character. He was discharged at Camp Lee Virginia on July 3, 1919.
He was a charter member and organizer of the American Legion Post in Lansing-the first organized in Ashe County-and was later moved to West Jefferson.
His neighbors speak highly of him. When they go on a trip or vacation he kept watch over their premises. There is nothing that he would not undertake to help those in need.
For 25 years he was the chairman of the Lansing School Board. His name is the first on the corner of the huge Lansing Elementary School building. During the late 40's he was the head of the Trade School, teaching the students to be proficient in the various construction jobs. He was proud of that position.
He was loyal to his politican party party, in township, state and nation. He was head of the Executive Committee of the Piney Creek Township.
He was justly proud of his family. They loved him dearly and were glad to have him in their homes. The last time I saw him he had just received a letter from a grandaughter who named the day when they were coming to see him.
He was a great believer in the Primitive Baptist Church. When he knew that his days were few in the earth he said to several people that he was ready and prepared to go when the roll was called yonder.
Too much cannot be said about the fine qualities of his mind and heart. When we had no hospital here he carried people to distant hospitals. He helped those in need. He was forthright and helpful to many people who will rise up and call him blessed. This large congregation present is testimony to that. He will be missed by a host of people. Mr. Baldwin is survived by 2 daughters, Mrs. Irene Baldwin Hartsog of Hockessin, Del., and Mrs. Glenna Balewin Weaver of Oxford, Pa.; 1 sister, Mrs. Mollie Baldwin Jones, of Grassy Creek; 2 brothers, John Baldwin, of Beckley, W.Va. and Wiley Baldwin of Lansing; 5 grandchildren, Mrs. Rebecca Weaver Shires, Mrs. Linda Weaver Haney, and Sidney Weaver, all of Pennsylvania, Miss Cindy Hartsog and Miss Cathy Hartsog, of Delaware; and five great-grandchildren.
A host of friends will keep him fresh in their memories.
