Syrian peddler helped shape downtown Franklin

During the “Great Migration” (1880-1924), about 95,000 Arabs came to the United States from the region known as Greater Syria (including present Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine/Israel).
One of those immigrants would have a profound impact on the little town of Franklin, N.C.
Joseph Ashear, like most Arabs who arrived during the Great Migration, was a Christian. He arrived in the U.S. in 1909 and began following the typical immigrant pattern. He became a peddler.
Ashear was renowned for his physical strength. He went to Gainesville, Ga., was outfitted by his contact there and set off on foot, covered all over with goods. He was a virtual walking department store, carrying pots and pans and just about any portable item his customers could want.
Ashear and the other Syrian peddlers brought a new level of retail choice to the countryside, arriving with a selection of tools, utensils, material, notions and, perhaps, exotic spices and goods from foreign lands. In those days, people in rural areas had few shopping opportunities. Country stores carried the basics, but for anything beyond that they had to go to town. Given the poor state of transportation, many country folks were lucky to make one or two trips to town each year. Mail-order catalogues offered a world of choices, but it could take weeks or months to get the merchandise. The Syrian peddler was a welcome novelty.
The immigrants literally hit the ground running. Most were on the road with merchandise a day or two after arriving at their destination.
According to Alixa Naff, who has documented the fascinating era of the Syrian peddler, these newcomers arrived with a well-thought-out plan.
“Generally, the Syrian immigrants knew their specific destinations in the United States,” Naff wrote. “It was to a particular supplier in a particular location and they knew they were going to peddle merchandise from door to door in towns and cities and from farmhouse to farmhouse in the countryside.”
Naff described the supplier as “a veteran peddler who decided to settle down in a well-chosen location.” Once established, he would recruit peddlers from his family and home village in the old country. By the time of Ashear's arrival, a well-established network of Syrian suppliers and peddling routes covered the continent.
When a new immigrant arrived, his supplier fitted him out, briefed him on the sales techniques he would need and taught him a few necessary English phrases. Then he was off.
The network functioned efficiently and was hugely profitable. Peddlers could make $200 per month in 1910. Many original peddlers soon graduated to permanent storefronts in little towns all across America.
Joe Ashear chose Franklin, opening his first store here in 1911. He married a local girl, Eva Henry, in 1912. His first storefront was in a small frame shop facing the public square. Later, he moved to a store in the Franks Building (which now houses Nina's Lingerie and the Scottish Tartans Museum).
In 1930, the Syrian-born merchant built the Ashear Building in the same location as his original store. This building, which he later expanded, is now the home of People's Department Store.
Ashear's legendary reputation for physical strength gained further currency during the construction of his building. Charles Davis recalled that he excavated the site with mules and scoop pans. The mules would draw dirt up a ramp and haul it back to below the Baptist Church to dump it.
When a mule stepped into the fill dirt and got stuck on the edge of the ravine, some men ran to get Joe. “He held that mule by his tail and pulled him up until he got his footing,” Davis told me.
Ashear marked his 30th anniversary in Franklin with an ad in The Franklin Press (1941) that summed up his business philosophy: “Today my pride is that during these 30 years many of you and your families have been my steady customers. You have relied on my judgment. When you have said, ‘I'll ask Joe if this is what I want,' you have paid me the highest possible compliment.”
As did many Arab immigrants of that period, Ashear brought over several members of his family - his parents, Nessar and Mildred Ashear, and his brothers George and Mitchell. Another brother, Ellis, settled in Brazil.
The 1930 census showed Ashear living on Palmer Street in a house valued at $5,000. The household included his wife Eva, brother Mitchell and widowed father Nessar. He gave his birthplace as Syria and his native tongue as Arabic.
Ashear plunged enthusiastically into civic life and served as the Franklin fire chief. He was a Rotarian and a member of the Woodmen of the World. He was one of the founders of St. Francis Catholic Church and his funeral service was conducted there following his death on April 2, 1967, at age 80.
