Obituary from The Skyland Post, Ashe County, North Carolina, dated June 10, 1954:
William Calloway Is Killed When Truck Overturns

West Jefferson Man Fatally Injured Near Laurel Springs

William Calloway, 27, West Jefferson was critically injured and died a few minutes later when the lumber truck he was diving overturned in the Laurel Springs section.
According to the highway patrolmen, who investigated the fatal accident, William Calloway was operating a 1953 G.M.C. 2 ton truck owned by George Pell Bowers of West Jefferson, at approximately 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. He was approching the Cranberry Creek road from Lane Road when the bank gave way on the left. The truck turned over and rolled 40 feet and came to rest in the creek on its left side.
Calloway jumped from the truck and the load of lumber broke loose and landed on top of him.
The other occupant of the truck, Pell Bowers, jumped on the other side of the vehicle and was not hurt.
Clayton Little rushed the injured man to the hospital where he died a few minutes after being admitted, of internal injuries and a broken back.
Both patromen Jack Garner and John Dillard investigated the accident and are uncertain as to whether the death will be carried as a traffic accident.
The deceased who graduated from West Jefferson high school is a vereran of World War II and a Korean War veteran having served in the army and marines.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Caloway; twin brother, Walter Calloway and sister, Mrs. Ken Bowers.
The funeral will be at 3:00 p.m. today at the home of Rev. M.D. Hart and Rev. Dewey Roten, officiating. Burial will be in the family cemetery.

William Calloway

William Alfred Calloway, son of William M. and Sallie Calloway was born April 5, 1927 and died June 8, 1954, making his age 27 years, two months and three days. He leaves his father and mother, one twin brother, Walter Calloway, and one sister, Mrs. Ophelia Bowers, all of West Jefferson.
William served in the armed services of World War II and for eleven months, and in the U.S. Marines for a period of two years in the Korean War. He came home with an honorable discharge for his service rendered to his country, which he served with honor and distinction.
It was only natural for William to wear a smile, which helped to make for him his many, many friends. He was one of the finest young men of our community and will be greatly missed by the family and his many friends who knew him.
William professed faith in Christ some years ago but had never united himself to any church.
"Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me, And may there be no moaning at the bar, When I put out to sea."
The funeral service was conducted by Rev. M.D. Hart and Elder Dewey Roten. The body was laid to rest in the family cemetery near the home.
Written by Rev. M.D. Hart.
