WITEK Family

In June 2003 I received an e-mail from Roman Witek of Poland saying he had found my webpage through a Google search. Roman's mother was Maria nee SZTORC, born in the Village of Łęki Górne, now in woj. Podkarpackie. Two of Maria's uncles, Franciszek and Jan, and an aunt Anna (all SZTORCes) had immigrated to the United States in the early 1900's. Roman wondered if it might be possible to trace their whereabouts and possibly connect with living relatives. After almost two years of piecing together their history, we were "found" by a grandson of Frank (Franciszek) STORC -- once again through a search on the web. Roman was also curious if we might be related through our common SZTORC ancestry. In the process of trying to establish a link between our SZTORC families, I found that Roman and I are fourth cousins through our PAPROCKI ancestors. Using the microfilmed church records for the Parish of Łęki Górne, I traced Roman's SZTORC line back to his 3rd great grandparents, Mathias STORC and Justina nee URBAN, but I could not make a connection to my SZTORC line. Genealogy research has a way of getting you "hooked." Once Roman and I had assembled all that we had found about his SZTORC families -- both American and Polish, he began to wonder what we might be able find about his father's WITEK family.

Roman's father was Władysław WITEK, born 14 March 1907, in Żukowice Nowe, a son of Adam WITEK and Agata nee LIS. Władysław married Maria SZTORC, daughter of Józef SZTORC and Eleonora nee MICZEK, on 21 July 1940, in Tarnów, Poland.

A search at FamilySearch.org, the LDS Family History site, for records for Żukowice Nowe, showed that we would not be able to find Roman's father in them. Władysław was born in 1907, and the baptism records end with the year 1900. At the time, we had no other birth or marriage information for any of Władysław's siblings or for his parents.

In May of 2005 Roman visited his aunt Anna WITEK BOREK, who was living in Żukowice Nowe; Anna was 95 years old at the time. Through his conversations with Aunt Anna and his cousin Krystyna, and a visit to the cemetery, Roman was able to compile a list of his father's siblings, and found birth dates for a few of them. Roman's uncle Ignacy was born 14 January 1900, and it was my hope that I would be able to find him in the microfilm records for the Parish of Jastrz±bka Nowa or Żukowice Stare, which included the Village of Żukowice Nowe.

I was successful in locating the birth/baptism record for Ignacy WITEK (see photograph below). The baptism records from this time period include the name of the child, names of the parents - including the maiden name of the mother, and also the names of the grandparents. These pieces of information contribute to being able to track the family lines backward in time. This record also had Ignacy's marriage information noted.

Adam WITEK and Agata LIS

After locating the baptism record for Ignacy, I searched backwards from Ignacy's year of birth through the parish marriage records, looking for the marriage of Adam WITEK and Agata LIS. Adam and Agata were married 24 February 1892 in the Parish of Jastrz±bka Nowa, Poland. Going back to the baptism records, I looked for more children born between the time of their marriage in 1892 and the birth of Ignacy in 1900. I found one more child, Josephus / Józef, born to them between these dates. Using their ages given on the marriage record, I calculated the approximate year of birth for Adam and Agata, and I was able to locate the birth/baptism record for each of them.

Laurentius WITEK and Agatha / Agnes CYGAN

Adam WITEK was a son of Laurentius WITEK and Agatha nee CYGAN. Laurentius was a son of Jacobus WITEK and Agatha nee STARZEC. Agatha / Agnes CYGAN was a daughter of Mathias CYGAN and Anna nee WITEK [another WITEK line]. Once again I tracked backwards in the parish marriage records, beginning with the year of Adam's birth in 1864. Laurentius WITEK and Agatha nee CYGAN were married 13 February 1844 in the Parish of Jastrz±bka Nowa, Village of Żukowice. Calculating their approximate year of birth from the ages on their marriage record, I saw that I would not be able to find their baptism records on the microfilm for the Parish of Żukowice Stare, which date back to 1837. The records for Żukowice Nowe prior to 1837 were with the Parish of Lisia Góra.

I ordered LDS microfilm numbers 2007210, 2007211 and 2007212, which contain birth/baptism, marriage and some death records for the Lisia Góra parish. I found the birth/baptism records for Laurentius and Agatha, using the same method of calculating an approximate birth year from their ages on their marriage record. The earlier records do not include as much information on them, which makes it harder to track back the family lines. Notice that the baptism records for Laurentius and Agnes do not have all their grandparents' names.
