John Frank STORZ / STORTZ and Anna RYBA

In July 2009 I received an e-mail from Andrea who wrote:
[My husband's] paternal grandfather was John Frank Stortz from Galicia Poland. He came to America in 1902 and lived one year in Chicago working at the steel mills. He then came to Columbus, NE working for Union Pacific and lived there the rest of his life. He died in 1959. John Frank's parents were Jacob (Jack) Stortz and Sophie Thoman and he had a brother, Stanley who stayed in Poland. This is all the information we have and there are no relatives alive in Columbus that can help us out.
Andrea sent me a photograhph of John's tombstone that includes his full date of birth and death date.  Anna's information is at Find A Grave http://www.findagrave.com.

John F. STORZ, born Aug 7, 1878 - died Aug 13, 1959, buried St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Columbus, Platte County, Nebraska
Anna RYBA STORZ, born Nov 15, 1890 - died Oct 24, 1968, also buried in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.

Stanislaus STORC / SZTORC and Theophila FIEDLER

In April 2010 I received an e-mail from Therese who wrote:
I am a descendent of ________ Storc whose father was Stanislaus Storc and mother was Theophila (Wolniewicz) Fiedler. My father was born in Omaha, Nebraska. His mother was born in Poznan, Poland. His father was born in Galicia, Poland. I was told that his surname was originally Sztorc. My father's father had a brother named Stanley Storc / Sztorc who lived in Chicago.
Starting with the 1930 census, the latest census available to the public, I easily located Therese's family in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska.  Enumerated with Stanley were his wife, Theophila, and their children: John, Mary, Cecilia, Lucy, Joseph, Francis, Dorothy and Stanley.  Theophila's widowed mother, Rose FIDLER, was also living with them.

1930 U.S. census, Nebraska, Douglas County, Omaha, ED 95, sheet 8B, 5 April 1930
2928 Arbor Street, dwelling 99, family 107
Storc, Stanley, head, age 43, married, age 23 when first married, born Poland Austria, parents born Poland Austria, immigrated 1903, naturalized, fireman, railroad
Storc, Theophila, wife, age 42, age 22 when first married, born Poland Austria, parents born Poland Austria, immigrated 1895, naturalized
Storc, John, son, age 18, single, born Nebraska, parents born Poland Austria
Storc, Mary, daughter, age 17, single, born Nebraska, parents born Poland Austria, stenographer, flour mill
Storc, Cecilia, daughter, age 15, single, born Nebraska, parents born Poland Austria
Storc, Lucy, daughter, age 13, single, born Nebraska, parents born Poland Austria
Storc, Joseph, son, age 11, single, born Nebraska, parents born Poland Austria
Storc, Francis, son, age 9, single, born Nebraska, parents born Poland Austria
Storc, Dorothy, daughter, age 6, single, born Nebraska, parents born Poland Austria

Fidler, Rose, mother-in-law, age 67, widowed, born Poland Austria, parents born Poland Austria, immigrated 1898, alien

I next found Stanley and Theophila in the 1920 census in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska, with their children John, Mary, Cecelia, Lucy and Joseph.  Theophilia's widowed mother was living with them.

1920 U.S. census, Nebraska, Douglas County, Omaha, ED 84, sheet 10A, ___ January 1920

Storc, Stanley, head, age 33, married, immigrated 1903, naturalized 1919, born Poland, parents born Poland, locomotive fireman, railroad
Storc, Theophelia, wife, age 32, married, immigrated 1888, naturalized 1919, born Poland, parents born Poland
Storc, John, son, age 8 10/12, single, born Nebraska, parents born Poland
Storc, Mary, daughter, age 6 11/12, single, born Nebraska, parents born Poland
Storc, Cecelia, daughter, age 5 5/12, single, born Nebraska, parents born Poland

Fedlar, Rosylia, mother-in-law, age 59, widowed, immigrated 1888, alien, born Austria Poland, parents born Austria Poland

In 1917 Stanley registered for the World War I draft, which gave his year of birth:

World War I draft registration - 1917

2765 Dean Street, Omaha, Nebraska
Born December 26, 1886
Declarant, birthplace Tarnow, Poland Austria, citizen of Austria
Occupation, Asst Foreman, Cudahy Packing Company, So. Side Omaha
Dependents, wife, 4 children - also has mother-in-law
Married, caucasian

According to the 1920 and 1930 censuses, Stanley immigrated in 1903.  I have not found him in the 1910Map Skrzyszow, Poland census yet.  I found a 16-year-old Stanislaw SZTORC on a 1903 ship manifest, going to be with a cousin in Omaha, Nebraska.  The ship Koln arrived at the Port of Baltimore on 8 May 1903.  Stanislaw's last residence was Skrzyszow, Poland.  His cousin in Omaha was Grzegorz Kloch (I'm not 100% sure about the last name - Kl...h), who was living at 2019 So. 21st Street.  I currently do not have information to confirm that the Stanislaw on this ship list is the one who later married Theophila FIEDLER.

I found Theophila enumerated with her parents in 1910 and 1900 in Omaha.  In each of these censuses Theophila and her parents indicated they immigrated in 1898.  Jacob, Rosalie and Teofila FIEDLER were listed on the manifest of the S. S. Pennsylvania that arrived at the Port of New York on 17 June 1898.  Their last residence was Murowanna.  Jacob indicated they were going to be with their son-in-law Adalbert SZCZEPANIAK  See SZCZEPANIAK for additional information.

Stanley Storc is my maternal grandmother, Victoria Storc's brother. Victoria (Storc)Bryl passed away in 1932 when my mom was around 10 years old. My mother, Loretta (Bryl)Hrbek does remember Stanley and Theophilia as a young girl.
My mom, Loretta is almost 90 years old and I have been trying to find some information about her mom. I do know that she immigrated from Skrzyszow, Austria (Tarnow,Galicy,Poland). I have the original ship manifest stating that she traveled Nov. 24th, 1908 on the ship, Kaiser Wilhelm II, from Bremen to New York. On the manifest it states her closest relative and address as; father Jan Storc, from Skrzyszow, Tarnow. It's very difficult to read, but when I zoom in as close as I can I do believe that the name IS Jan Storc.
I have not been able to locate any birth/baptismal records showing Victoria (Wiktorya) Storc listed with her brother Stanley?? Also, my mom thought there was also another brother by the name of Larry, who possible lived in Chicago?? Victoria Storc was born in 1891, and if my information is correct, Stanley was born in 1886.
If you have any information that you would be able to share with me...I would greatly appreciate it!!
Vicki (Hrbek)Kyros (granddaughter of Victoria Storc)

Date of marriage: Tuesday, 22 July 1890

Children listed in the Birth Index for Chicago Parishes, formerly at PGSA.org.  Since Frank and Victoria married in 1890 and the first child listed below was born in 1895, there were probably other children born to them.

St. John Cantius Church, Chicago, IL - Birth Index

The 1900 U.S. Census lists Frank and Wiktoria and their first four children:

1900 U.S. census, Illinois, Cook County, Chicago, ED 517, sheet 8A, 8 June 1900
32 Will Street, dwelling 50, family 131
Last name looks like Store, should be Storc
Storc, Frank, head, born Dec 1867, age 32, married, married 10 years, born Poland Aust, parents born Poland Aust, immigrated 1885, (cannot read the occupation)
Storc, Wiktorya, wife, born Apr 1869, age 31, married, married 10 years, mother of 4 children, 4 children living, born Poland Aust, parents born Poland Aust, immigrated 1885

Storc, Stefan, son, born Sep 1899, age 9/12, born Illinois, parents born Poland Aust

I found a possible death record for Wiktoria at FamilySearch.org.  Her name, marital status and calculated year of birth match information from other sources, but there is nothing to tie her to directly to this family.

Michael SZTORC and Marianna CUBA / CZUBA
Michael SZTORC and Jadwiga KOWALCZYK

Michael's first marriage was to Marianna nee CUBA / CZUBA.  They married in the Parish of Pilzno, Poland, in the Village of Kozia Wola.

Marriage record, LDS microfilm 2006734, item 9, Village of Kozia Wola, Parish of Pilzno, Galicia, Poland

Witnesses:  Josephus Sztorc, hortulanus; Andreas Jurek, hortulanus

Michael was a son of Stanislaus SZTORC and Anna nee TATARCZANY.  Robyn Nykaza has researched this line.  The family for Stanislaus and Anna in her Rootsweb WorldConnect file is at http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=robynnykaza&id=I54

According to the 1910 U.S. census for Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, Michael immigrated to the U.S. in 1892.  Between the 1910 census and the birth index for St. John Cantius Church in Chicago at the PGSA.org website, I believe Michael SZTORC and Marianna CUBA / CZUBA were the parents of Helena, Marianna, Adam Michael, Lucy and Stefania.

Helena SZTORC
Helena was born in the Village of Zajączkowice / Zajaczkowice and baptized in the Parish of Pilzno, Poland.

Birth/baptism record, LDS microfilm 2006733, item 4, Parish of Pilzno, Village of Zajaczkowice,  page 182, #4

Lucy SZTORC
The 1910 U.S. census for Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, shows that Lucy was 8 years old at the time of the census.  She was born in Austria Poland.  If her birthplace is correct that would mean Michael and Marianna returned to Poland for a while and then came back to Chicago.

I believe Marianna died 6 December 1905 in Chicago.  At the time that she and Michael married in Pilzno, Poland, Marianna was 20 years old, giving her calculated year of birth as 1870.  I found an entry in the online Illinois Vital records database for a Marijan STORC age 35 years old.

In the online Illinois Statewide Death Index, 1916–1950 was the following entry:
http://www.ilsos.gov/GenealogyMWeb/idphdeathsrch.html
ROGUS, LUDWIG, sex/race M/W, age UNK, certificate number 6006285, date of death 1916-02-24, county COOK, city CHICAGO, date filed 16-02-24

In November 2008 I received an e-mail from Carol Rogers, a great grandniece of Hedwig SZTORC ROGUS. Her great grandmother, Karolina / Carolina SZTORC / STORC was a sister of Hedwig. In answer to a few of my questions to her she wrote:

Karolina married Jan Rasinski in Toluca, IL, on January 22, 1900. At that time, Ludwik and Jadwiga Storc Rogus also lived in Toluca. Both men worked in the coal mines.

Neither family stayed in Toluca for long. No one knows why they left. But by 1901, both families had moved to Chicago. For a few years they lived in the neighborhood of St. John Cantius Church, but both families eventually moved to the vicinity of St. Hedwig's.

Jan Rasinski is said to have been a "lone wolf" kind of guy who reputedly cut off ties with other family from Poland. Nevertheless, the little bit of information in American records about him has led me and my sisters (my partners in crime) to conclude that he was born in the village of Parkosz, quite near Kozia Wola. He died in 1931 in the tb sanitarium in Chicago, and Karolina did not remarry.

Ludwig Rogus died of pulmonary tuberculosis in February 1916, so the death record that you saw is his. Jadwiga (known as Harriet to the older generations and as Ciotka Roguska to the younger) remarried, but apparently quite a while after his death. She married widower Anton Ratajczyk, some time after 1920. In the 1920 census she is living with her daughter Helen, and Helen's husband, (first name escapes me now) Ziemba.

Karolina Storc is my Mom's paternal grandmother. Her half sister, Anna Storc (Jozef Storc and Agata Skopek), is my father's maternal grandmother. Oddly enough, Dad's paternal grandfather was Anton Ratajczyk! So at one time, 3 of my great grandfathers were married to Storc sisters.

With the information I received from Carol I was able to find Hedwig in the 1920 census.  Enumerated with her were her daughter and son-in-law, Stanley and Helen ZIEMBA.

1920 U.S. census, Illinois, Cook County, Chicago, ED 932, sheet 10B, 9 January 1920
2024 No. Lincoln Stree, dwelling 77, family 204

Rogusz, Stanley, son, age 7, single, born Illinois, parents born Galicia Au

Ziemba, Helen, daughter, age Un, married, born Illinois, parents born Galicia Au, operator, tailor shop

I've found Stanley and Helen ZIEMBA in the 1930 census, but have not located Hedwig as yet.  According to Carol, Hedwig did marry an Anton RATAJCZYK.  I don't think that happened until after 1930, because I found a widower Anton RATAJCZYK enumerated in the 1930 census with three of his sons -- no wife listed.

In the Dziennik Chicagoski 1930-1971 Death Notice Index on the Polish Genealogical Society site (pgsa.org) I  found an entry for Hedwig and one for her son-in-law, Stanislaus ZIEMBA:

Ratajczyk, Jadwiga, died  10/27/1960, Storcz, date of notice 28 Oct 1960

Ziemba, Stanislaw, died 4/3/1963, /wife Rogus, Helena, date of notice 4 Apr 1963

Carol's great grandmother, Karolina / Carolina SZTORC / STORC married Jan / John RASINSKI in Toluca, Marshal County, Illinois, on January 22, 1900.  They later moved to Chicago.

So far I have found them in the 1930 census for Illinois.

New York SZTORC

Joseph and Aniela SZTORC

On 29 Jun 2008 James and Marge SZTORC wrote the following in my online Guestbook:

It was fun to read your research! We found it interesting to know that there is another Marge Sztorc - although only through marriage. We live in NY state, town of Pendleton. Jim's parents are Edward and Maryanne Sztorc. Edward had two brothers - they were known by the names of Phil and Archie (not sure of their given names), and two sisters Felicia and Beatrice.

Until 2012 the 1930 U.S. cenus is the latest one available for public viewing.  I checked the 1930 census for New York state and found an Edward SZTORC enumerated with his parents Joseph and Aniela, and siblings: Felixa, Felix, and Arthur.

1930 U.S. census, New York, Erie County, Buffalo, ED 268, sheet 9A, 5 April 1930
88 Marion Avenue, dwelling 84, family 140
Sztorc, Joseph, head, age 35, married, age 21 when first married, born Poland, parents born Poland, immigrated 1912, naturalized, molder, foundry
Sztorc, Aniela, wife, age 35, married age 21 when first married, born Poland, parents born Poland, immigrated 1912 Sztorc, Felixa, daughter, age 12, single, born New York, parents born Poland
Sztorc, Edward, son, age 10, single, born New York, parents born Poland
Sztorc, Felix, son, age 4 10/12, single, born New York, parents born Poland
Sztorc, Arthur, son, age 1 9/12, single, born New York, parents born Poland
Galeza, Ignatz, roomer, age 40, single, born Poland, parents born Poland, immigrated 1911, first papers filed, coremaker, foundry
Gul, Jan, roomer, age 35, single, born Poland, parents born Poland, immigrated 1912, first papers filed, packer, implements

I also found Joseph and Aniela in the 1920 census.

1920 U.S. census, New York, Erie County, Buffalo, ED 198, sheet 24A, 20-21 January 1920
159 Howell, dwelling 353, family 406
Storc, Joseph, head, age 24, married, immigrated 1913, alien, born Poland, parents born Poland, coremaker, foundry Storc, Aniela, wife, age 26, married, immigrated 1913, alien, born Poland, parents born Poland
Storc, Edward, son, age 6/12, single, born New York, parents born Poland
Storc, Helen, daughter, age 1 11/12, single, born New York, parents born Poland

Edward was age 6/12 in the 1920 census which was taken in January of that year.  His birth date would calculate to June or July of 1919.  The online Social Security Death Index has the following entry:

EDWARD W SZTORC, born 09 Jul 1919, died 05 Jun 1989, last residence (not specified), last benefit (none specified), SSN 050-12-6181, issued New York

Joseph and Mary SZTORC / STORC

On 31 Dec 2011 researcher Tim ____ e-mailed the following to me:

[I am] Tracing my lineage I think that our trees overlap but am not positive.  I was curious if you have discovered anything in your research.   I believe that the linkage is the following:
  • (private)
  • Stanley Storc b:1942/d:2010 (New York/ Atlanta)
  • Thaddeus Storc b: 1911/d:1999 (New York)
  • Joseph Storc b:1883/d: ? - I know he was born in Austria based on conversations and a WWI draft card.  The draft card says that he was born in August of 1883.   On your site I found a record where there was a Joseph Storc who was born in Austria in December of 1883.  I thought that he might be the same person.  I believe he is the son of Stanislaus Sztorc and the grandson of Joannes Sztorc & Marianna Tworek (your GGGM if I read correctly).
I was curious if you have discovered anything in your research on the Joseph Storc/Sztorc.

I did not have any further information about Joseph in my family file.  I added Tim's Joseph STORC as an unlinked person to my family tree at Ancestry.com.  I added Thaddeus and Stanley, then searched for clues about Tim's STORC family.  There was another public tree at Ancestry.com that had these indivuduals included.

I located the WW I draft registration that Tim referred to.  I easily found Joseph and his family in the 1920 U.S. census in Jamaica, Queens County, New York.  It took some creative searching at Ancestry and also a few searches at the LDS site at FamilySearch.org to find additional information about this family.  Following is what I pieced together about the Joseph SZTORC / STORC family.

Joseph noted on the 1920 census that he had immigrated in 1904.  I located a 1904 ship manifest with a Jozef SZTORC listed.  Jozef noted the village of Latoszyn as his last residence in Galicia, which was the Austrian partition of Poland at this time.

List or Manifest of Alien Passengers for the U.S. Immigration Office at Port of Arrival
S. S. Friedrich d. Grosse sailing from Bremen, 17 Sep 1904, Arriving at Port of New York, 28 Sep 1904
Line 24
Sztorc, Jozef, age 20, male, single, laborer, Galicy, Polish, last residence Latoszyn, final destination Jamaica, passage paid by self, going to be with cousin Jan Krutz, Jamaica, 60 Catherine str

I resorted to using just first names only in my search to try and find this family in the 1910 census.  They were listed as the STOZ family.  An item of interest was the address on Catherine Street.  On the 1904 ship manifest Jozef SZTORC was going to be with a cousin who lived at 60 Catherine street.

1910 U.S. Census, New York, Queens County, Jamaica City of New York, ED 1270, sheet 3B, 18 April 1910
61 W. Catherine Street, dwelling 47, family 62
Stoz, Joseph, head, age 25, married once, married 4 years, born Aust Polish, parents born Aust Polish, immigrated 1904, alien, stone cutter, quarry
Stoz, Mary, wife, age 24, married once, married 4 years, mother of 3 children, 3 children living, born Aust Polish, parents born Aust Polish, immigrated 1904
Stoz, Stephen, son, age 3, single, born New York, parents born Aust Polish
Stoz, Emil, son, age 2, single, born New York, parents born Aust Polish
Stoz, Ludwig, son, age 3/12, single, born New York, parents born Aust Polish
Maros, Joseph, boarder, age 19, single, born Aust Polish, parents born Aust Polish, immigrated 1907, alien, laborer, railroad
Misa, Michael, boarder, age 19, single, born Aust Polish, parents born Aust Polish, immigrated 1906, alien, laborer, railroad

Here is the 1918 World War I draft registration and the 1920 census.  Both show Joseph living at 32 Sutphin Rd, in Jamaica, New York.  Son Emil, who was enumerated in the 1910 census is not listed in the 1920 census.  Son Ludwig in the 1910 census is Louis in 1920.

I first found this family in the 1930 census by searching  the LDS (Mormon) site at Family Search http://www.familysearch.org.  Their last name came up as STORK.  With the information from Family Search, I found the image of the census at Ancestry.  Also at Family Search I found the image of Joseph's 1942 World War II draft registration, which I could not find at Ancestry.  The WW II card gave Joseph's place of birth as Austria, Lottosazin, which I am supposing is a misspelling of Latoszyn (the village noted on the 1904 ship manifest).  Of note is the different date of birth between the WW I and the WW II cards.  The contact person named on the WW II card was Joseph's son, Stephen J STORC, which leads me to believe Joseph's wife Mary died before 1942.

1942 WW II draft registration - Joseph STORC

Following is information about some of the children of Joseph and Mary from various sources.

Steven STORC

Named as Stephen J STORC on his father's World War II draft registration card.  His address was 145-34 Arlington, Jamaica (New York)

According to the censuses Steven was born about 1907.  Ancestry and Family Search both found a listing in the Social Security Death Index for a Stephen J STORC.  I don't know for sure if this is the right person. The information needs to be confirmed.

Birth date: 22 Oct 1907; Death date: 23 Feb 1993
Last Residence on record at time of death: New Hyde Park, Nassau, New York, United States of America
SS Number: 097-05-1920; Issue State: New York; Issue Date: Before 1951.

Louis / Ludwig STORC

According to the censuses Louis was born about 1909 or 1910.  Ancestry found a listing in the Social Security Death Index for him.  Since his last residence on record was in Jamaica, New York, I am making an assumption this is the same person.  The information needs to be confirmed.

Birth date: 7 Jan 1910; Death date: Jun 1966
Death place: Jamaica, Queens, New York, United States of America
Number: 076-22-0901; Issue State: New York; Issue Date: Before 1951.

Thaddeus STORC

Tim listed Thaddeus as one of his direct ancestors:  Thaddeus Storc b: 1911/d:1999 (New York)

Ancestry's Social Security Death Index entry for Thaddeus:
Name: Thaddeus Storc
Last Residence: 11435  Jamaica, Queens, New York
Born: 25 Jul 1911; Died: 28 Apr 1999
SSN: 096-09-2739; State (Year) SSN issued: New York (Before 1951)

A public family tree at Ancestry named Thaddeus' spouse as Anna nee MORRIS, born ____, died 2006.  Ancestry found this entry in the Social Security Death Index

Name: Anna Storc
Last Residence: 11435  Jamaica, Queens, New York
Born: 27 Dec 1915; Died: 11 Aug 2006
State (Year) SSN issued: New York (Before 1951)

Tim listed Stanley Storc b:1942/d:2010 (New York/ Atlanta), son of Thaddeus as his direct ancestor.

Ancestry's Social Security Death Index listing:

Last Residence: 30338  Atlanta, Fulton, Georgia
Born: 25 Nov 1942; Died: 9 Nov 2010
State (Year) SSN issued: New York (1957-1958)

The public family tree at Ancestry named Stanley STORC's spouse as Alice Marie FARRELL, born 6 Apr 1944, died 6 Sep 2010.

Name: Alice Marie Storc
Last Residence: 30338  Atlanta, Fulton, Georgia; Last Benefit: 30338  Atlanta, Fulton, Georgia
Born: 6 Apr 1944; Died: 6 Sep 2010
State (Year) SSN issued: New York (1959-1961)

I checked the Family History Library Catalog at FamilySearch.org to see if the Church records for Latoszyn were on microfilm.  Latoszyn is part of the Debica / Dębica Parish.  The good news is that the records have been microfilmed - FHL INTL Film 1884966.  The bad news is that it looks like the birth records skip from Akta urodzeń (Latoszyn) 1857-1873 to Akta urodzeń (Latoszyn) 1885-1904 -- the records between 1874-1884 are not listed.  Joseph SZTORC was born 16 Aug 1883 or 29 Sep 1884 depending on the source.  I would still order the microfilm to see if those records just weren't listed in the detail.

Joseph's page in my Ancestry.com family tree is at http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/17795064/person/18546050539

My SZTORC family tracks back to the village of Zajaczkowice (near Lipiny on the map below) in the Parish of Pilzno.  Latoszyn is about 6 miles from Pilzno.  It is possible these two SZTORC families may connect.
