SENPACK

This page contains the data I collected about the SENPACK surname in response to a Guestbook entry by Lisa Way.  Since there is very little information available for the SENPACK surname, I wonder if the name was changed at some point.

I have no personal ties to this family.   BACK to my Miscellaneous Research page.

20 July 2007 -- Guestbook entry from Lisa, she indicated the surname she was researching was SENPACK
Im looking for my greatgrandfathers family, who originated here in tarnow, poland. He was born 1896, and come to the states around i believe before 1930. he died in 1977.

Social Security Death Index

The first place I checked for the SENPACK surname was in Rootsweb's online Social Security Death Index.  I found only one entry:

Name Birth Death Last Residence Last Benefit SSN Issued
WALTER SENPACK 12 Nov 1889 Sep 1977 25119 (Kincaid, Fayette, WV) 25901 (Oak Hill, Fayette, WV) 232-16-9559 West Virginia or North Carolina

I next searched for the surname SENPACK at Ancestry.com, where I have a subscription.  There were only five entries or the SENPACK surname: two in the 1930 U.S. census, one in the Florida Marriage Collection, one in their Social Security Death Index (SSDI), and one in the U.S. World War II Draft Registration Cards.  Following is the information I extracted from each source.

The information from the Ancestry SSDI was the same as the Rootsweb entry.

The Florida marriage record was for Stella Nadine SENPACK and Walter Miller BOWLES, who were married in Indian River County in February 1962.  I have not connected Stella Nadine SENPACK to the Walter SENPACK family.

United States Census Records

The 1930 U.S. census entry was in Logan City, Logan County, West Virginia.

1930 U.S. census, West Virginia, Logan County, Logan City, ED 9, sheet 10A
Wilson Camp, #30, dwelling 185, family 227
Senpack, Walter, head, age 31, married, age 27, when first married, born Poland, parents born Poland, immigrated 1908, alien, miner, coal mines
Senpack, Margaret, wife, age 25, married, age 21 when first married, born West Virginia, father born Germany, mother born Virginia

Walter was born about 1899, and Margaret was born about 1905.

Based on Walter and Margaret's ages and the age they gave when they were first married, we can calculate that they were married about four years -- 1926.

Walter said he immigrated in 1908, which means I should be able to locate him in the 1910 and 1920 censuses -- somewhere.

World War II Draft Registration

World War II draft registration, 1942
Serial Number: U637
Walter Willer Senpack; place of residence Betsey, Putnam County, W. Va.; mailing address Bancroft, W. Va.; telephone _____ ; age in years 45, place of birth Tornow, Poland; date of birth Sept. 12, 1896; name and address of person who will always know your address Mrs. Margaret Senpack
Height 5' 6"; weight 155; blue eyes; grey hair; light complexion
Local Board No. 3, Logan County, W. Va.

This is probably the same Walter SENPACK as the one in the 1930 census entry.

The birthdate from the Walter SENPACK (12 Nov 1889) in the SSDI and the one on the draft registration (12 Sep 1896) vary quite a bit.

Ellis Island Entries

When I searched the Ellis Island entries at the JewishGen  (http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/eidb/ellisgold.html) website, there were no SENPACKs.  I refined my search to list surnames that started with the letters SENP and came up with the following entry that has some similarities.

New York Passenger List, 07 May 1907, S. S. Rijndam
Sailing from Rotterdam 27 Apr 1907, Arriving at Port of New York 7 (or 9) May 1907
line 10, Josef Senpakewiz; age 21 (born abt 1886); male; baker; can read and write; Race or People, Hebrew; last residence, Ostrowo; final destination, New York; going to be with brother-in-law Yaska Deutsch, 24 Nofek str. New York; height, 5' 4 1/2"; blond hair; blue eyes; born in Ostrowo

This person's first name is Josef, not Walter or some variation of Walter

Josef was born about 1886, which is the same birth year as the Walter SENPACK in the SSDI entry.

Josef immigrated in 1907.  In the 1930 census Walter said he immigrated in 1908.

I am not saying one way or another that this is the Walter SENPACK named in the other records.
