ASHFORD

Arnold, a friend of mine from church, was interested in finding more about his paternal grandfather, Ralph HAMEL, who was killed in action during World War II.  Arnold knew his grandfather was born in Manistique, Schoolcraft County, Michigan, but not much more.
Purple Heart Medal
A search at Ancestry.com revealed a Ralph H. HAMEL from Michigan buried in Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery in Belgium.  I also found Ralph's burial listed at Find-A-Grave.  Ralph was a Private First Class in the 16th Infantry 1st Division.  He died on 15 January 1945 and was awarded the Purple Heart Medal.

Starting with the U.S. censuses, I looked for additional information about Arnold's ancestors.  The pedigree chart below, gives a snapshot of what I've found so far, based on censuses and other sources available on the web.  This chart shows Arnold's HAMEL ancestors through his 3rd great grandparents.

Ralph HAMEL's mother was Adelaide Mary ASHFORD, daughter of Edmund ASHFORD and Caroline nee DAVIS.

HAMEL

I found Ralph enumerated in both the 1920 and 1930 U.S. censuses with his widowed grandmother, Mary HAMEL, in Manistique, Schoolcraft County, Michigan.  Also enumerated were Ralph's widowed father, Harry, and his siblings, Roger, Eugene and Margaret.  In 1910 Ralph's father, Harry, was single and living with his widowed mother and a sister Agnes.  Harry would have married some time after 1910 and was widowed by 1920.

I continued tracking this HAMEL family back through the census records.  In 1900 Harry was enumerated with his parents and two sisters.  Harry's parents, Henry A. and Mary T, married about 1885.  Since the 1890 census is not available, having been destroyed, 1900 is the only census I would find Harry's parents together.  According to the 1900 census, Harry's father, Henry A., was born in New York in October 1861, therefore I looked for him in the 1880 and 1870 censuses.  In 1880 a 26-year-old Henry HAMEL was one of several boarders enumerated with a widow, Adeline Fuller, and her 5 children in Manistique.  The 1870 census has 16-year-old Henry enumerated with his parents Henry and Caroline and several siblings in Corning, Steuben County, New York.  Doing the math, if Henry was 16 years old in 1870 and 26 years old in 1880, he wasn't born in 1861, as the 1900 census indicated, but around 1854.  This raises the question as to whether I have the right Henry or not.  I later found a cemetery extract for Lakeview Cemetery in Manistique listing six HAMELs, which gave Harry's birth year as 1854.  Not definitive proof, but adds to the possibility / probability this is the same person.  The 1860 census gives the family name as HAMMOND, but based on the individuals named, it is apparent it is the HAMEL family.

The 1900 U.S. census for New York shows that Henry's parents, Henry and Caroline, immigrated in 1850 and 1851 respectively.  They had been married for 49 years.  I checked the 1850 census, but did not find anyone whose information matched Henry's.

ASHFORD

Ralph HAMEL's mother was Adelaide Mary ASHFORD.  Adelaide married Harry HAMEL on 23 Jun 1910, shortly after the 1910 census was taken.  She died 13 Dec 1918, so Harry and Adelaide were never listed in a U.S. census together.  In 1910 and 1900 Adelaide was enumerated with her parents, Edmund and Caroline ASHFORD, and siblings, Frank E. and Edith R.  (Another online source, a biographical sketch of Edmund ASHFORD, names another son Harry.)

The 1910 census shows that Adelaide's parents immigrated in 1880, but I was unable to find them enumerated in the 1880 U.S. census.  However, at FamilySearch.org, I did find an Edmund ASHFORD enumerated in the 1881 Canada census, who appears to be Adelaide's father.  I also found Caroline ASHFORD, enumerated in the 1881 British census, living with her parents.  According to a couple of online biographies, Edmund ASHFORD lived in Canada for a time before settling in Manistique, Michigan.

Notes:
Edmund ASHFORD and Caroline nee DAVIS are my friend Arnold HAMEL's great grandparents
According to the online book "Memorial record of the Northern Peninsula of Michigan," published by The Lewis Publishing Company in 1895, Edmund ASHFORD was born 25 March 1853 in the shire of Warwick, England.  The same source names his parents as James and Mary nee PERKS.  There were eleven children born to James and Mary, nine were living in 1895: Edmund, Joseph, Thomas, John, Mary, George, Walter, Edward and Earnest.
Other information from this source:  "Edmund Ashford is the only one that ever came to the United States.  He was educated in public and private schools of his native land and at the age of sixteen he bade adieu to home and friends, sailing for Australia.  He located in Adelaide, South Australia, and was in the government service, exploring in the survey department.  There he remained for some years, but at length returned on a visit to England, and while there was married, in 1876, to Miss Carrie Davis.  In the same year he sailed with his bride for Canada, and secured employment with a lumber firm of that country for a year at Mad river.  In 1878 he came directly to Manistique and engaged with the Chicago Lumber Company, continuing that connection until 1892."
"... Their family numbers three children, Harry, Adelaide and Frank; and they also lost five. They are members of the Episcopal Church...."  (Note: their daughter Edith was born in 1897.Google Books (1)
Another online source at Google Books, "A history of the northern peninsula of Michigan and its people", published in 1911, says:
"Judge Edmund Ashford was born in England, in Warwickshire, March 25, 1853....   His boyhood days were spent in the place of his birth, receiving there also his public school training, and during about six years of his early life he was in the government service in Australia.  Returning from there to England he was married in the mother country in 1878 to Caroline Davis, a native daughter of that country.  Together they made the journey to Canada in 1879, and in 1880 they came to Manistique.  Mr. Ashford during the first ten years of his residence here filling the position of lumber inspector for the Chicago Lumber company...."
"Four children have been born to Judge and Mrs. Ashford, and the eldest, Harry Ashford, is living on the Neopit Indian reservation and is employed as a bookkeeper. Adelaide, the elder daughter, is at home with her parents and is her father's assistant, while Frank is in Duluth, and Edith is also at home...."  Google Books (2)
The publications above note that Edmund and Caroline ASHFORD married in either 1876 or 1878, came to Canada, and then to the U.S. in either 1878 or 1880.  However, in 1881 Caroline ASHFORD and her son H.C.D. [Harry Charles Davis] were listed in the British census, living with Caroline's parents John and Mary M. DAVIS.  This census shows that Harry was 11 months old and that he was born in Sutton Coldfield, Warwick, England.
I found an Edmund ASHFORD enumerated in the 1881 Canada census for Essa, Simcoe Souty, Ontario, whom I am guessing is the Edmund ASHFORD who ultimately immigrated to Manistique.
I checked to see if  Edmund and Caroline were in the 1880 U.S. census for Michigan, but did not find them.  The 1890 census is not available.  In 1900 through 1930 they were enumerated in Manistique, Schoolcraft County, Michigan.
In an online extract of the Lakeview Cemetery in Manistique, Michigan, I found the following entries:
Last Name, First Name, section, lot, grave, death date, born, age, Mother's Maiden Name
(children of Edmund and Caroline)
Ashford, Willie E., 01, 47, 1, died 10/22/1884, born ?, age 0, (blank)
Ashford, Arthur H., 01, 47, 1, died 08/08/1887, born ?, age 0, (blank)

Ashford, Frank, 01, 47, 3, died 08/25/1925, born 1886, age 39, Davis Caroline

Frank's entry gave his mother's maiden name.

(Edmund and Caroline)
Ashford, Edmond, 01, 47, 5, died 05/10/1935, born 03/25/1853, age 82, (unknown)
Ashford, Caroline, 01, 47, 4, died 01/17/1934, born 12/19/1854, age 79, Thickbroom-Maria

Caroline's entry noted her mother's maiden name.

Four of Edmund and Caroline's children lived to adulthood:  Harry Charles Davis, Adelaide Mary, Frank E. and Edith R.
Six children died in infancy.
William Ernest ASHFORD was born 15 Apr 1884 in Hiawatha, Schoolcraft County, Michigan.  He died 22 Oct 1884 in Hiawatha and is buried at Lakeview Cemetery in Manistique, Schoolcraft County.
Arthur H. ASHFORD died 8 Aug 1887 and is buried at Lakeview Cemetery in Manistique.  The cemetery extract for Lakeview does not note Athur's date of birth, but gives his age as 0.
Albert W. ASHFORD was born 12 Nov 1888 in Hiawatha.  He died 19 Aug 1889 in Hiawatha.  His death record gave cause of death as Cholera infantum.
A stillborn baby girl was born to Edmund and Caroline on 31 Dec 1890 in Manistique, Schoolcraft County.
The Lakeview Cemetery extract lists a Baby ASHFORD who died 28 Mar 1906 and a Baby ASHFORD who died 2 Oct 1908.  Neither of their birthdates was given, both their ages were noted as 0.
