My Great Grandmother Agnes Anna Magdalena
SCHNECK immigrated from Louisenthal, Prussia, (now Borzysławiec,
Poland) to
Norfolk, Madison County, Nebraska in the United States about 15 June
1893 with her husband Ferdinand THOMAS, her two sons Herman Charles
August, and Adolph George. Her widowed mother, Maria
Magdalena THOMAS SCHNECK, accompanied them. Agnes was born on 8
Nov 1872. Her birthplace was probably in Louisenthal, but I have
not yet found a source
for birth / baptism information for this time period.
Great Grandparents
Agnes Anna Magdlena nee SCHNECK and Ferdinand Johann THOMAS
Agnes Anna Magdalena
SCHNECK was a daughter of Carl
Friedrich Wilhelm SCHNECK and
Maria Magdalena nee THOMAS. She was born 8 Nov 1872, and died 9
Dec 1932 in Platte
County, Nebraska. On 21 Nov 1891 in Louisenthal, Prussia, she married
Ferdinand Johann THOMAS, a son of Johann Franz
Wilhelm THOMAS (Frank) and Henriette Wilhelmine Caroline nee
KÖHLER
(Wilhelmina), born 19 Mar 1867 in Prussia, died 25 Sep 1954 in Platte
County, Nebraska. Ferdinand and Agnes immigrated to the United
States
with their two sons, Herman and Adolph, and Agnes' mother Maria
Magdalena SCHNECK, arriving in New York around 15 June 1893 on the
ship H. H. Meier.
See my THOMAS page for more information

Great Great Grandparents
Carl Friedrich Wilhelm SCHNECK and Maria Magdalena nee THOMAS
Carl Friedrich Wilhelm
SCHNECK was born 27 Sep 1840 in Gross-Sophienthal, Prussia, which is
now Warcisławiec (near Rurzyca), Poland. He was baptized in
the
Lutheran Church in Gross-Sophienthal on 1 Nov 1840. Carl was a
son of Jo
hann
Christian August SCHNECK and Christine Friderika nee
REINHOLZ. He married Maria Magdalena nee THOMAS some time before
1864. Maria Magdalena was born 15 August 1841 in Louisenthal,
Prussia
(now Borzysławiec, Poland). Maria Magdalena's parents were
Andreas THOMAS
and Anna Maria HASE / HAASE. Carl and Maria were
probably married in Louisenthal, Prussia, but records still need to be
found to confirm this. Carl and Maria Magdalena were the parents of two
known
daughters:
Anna
Maria Magdalena SCHNECK, was born 28 March 1864 in
Louisenthal, Germany, according to her husband's Petition for
Naturalization filed in Madison County, Nebraska on 22 Sep

SCHUMACHER.
Agnes
Anna Magdalena SCHNECK, was born 8 Nov 1872, according to
her death certificate from the State of Nebraska. Agnes is my
great grandmother; she married Ferdinand Johann THOMAS.
See my THOMAS page for more information.
Since there was an eight year difference in Anna and Agnes' ages, one
could speculate there were probably more children born to Carl and
Maria Magdalena.
As of now, I have not found a source for the birth or baptism records
for this time period. (The LDS microfilm for Louisenthal covers
1809 through
1861; the civil records at the archive cover 1874 through 1901, with a
few gaps here and there. So far I have no records for the years
between 1861 and 1874.)
Carl Friedrich Wilhelm SCHNECK died 29 December 1884 in Louisenthal,
Prussia, at the age of 44 years 3 months and 2 days. In 1893
Maria Magdalena immigrated with her daughter Agnes and family to the
United States. In the 1900 U.S.
census for Nebraska Maria Magdalena was enumerated (as Helen) with her
daughter Anna and son-in-law Frank DOLLERSCHELL in Norfolk, Madison
County, Nebraska. A year later, on 20 November 1901, Maria
Magdalena died in Norfolk at the age of 60. For many decades her
gravesite went unmarked. When two of my mother's first cousins
began work on
The Thomas Family History in
1989, no one knew where Maria Magdalena was buried. In 1997 Jerry
Thomas, another first cousin of my mother's, located Maria Magdalena's
burial place in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Norfolk, Nebraska. Jerry
placed a tombstone on her grave that had been unmarked for close to 96
years.
3rd Great Grandparents
Johann Christian August SCHNECK and Christine Friderika REINHOLZ
Johann Christian Ausust SCHNECK and Christine Friderika REINHOLZ were
married 27 February 1840 in Gross-Sophienthal, Prussia, (now
Warcisławiec, Poland). According to their marriage record,
Christine, age 24, was a daughter of Johann Gottfried REINHOLZ a
colonist of Diedrichsdorf (now Bolechowo, Poland). I am not sure
what brought Johann Christian and Christine to Gross-Sophienthal,
because I found no other SCHNECK or REINHOLZ families there, with the
execption of a death record for a Carl Friedrich SCHNECK, on 17 Dec
1842, age 20 years,10 months. It is possible that Carl Friedrich
was Johann Christian's brother, because a Carl SCHNECK was named as one
of the Godparents of my great grandfather, Carl Friedrich
Wilhelm.
The microfilmed records of the Lutheran church in Gross-Sophienthal
show that Carl
Friedrich Wilhelm was born 27 Sep 1840 to Johann Christian SCHNECK and
Christine Friderika nee REIHNOLZ. I also
found a death record for a Johann August
Wilhelm SCHNECK, age 1 year, 11 months and 15 days, son of worker
Johann Christian August SCHNECK from Gross-Sophienthal. Johann
August's calculated date of birth would be about June 1838, but I found
no baptism record for him in the Gross-Sophienthal church
records. On 15 Oct 1842 a daughter, Hanna Friderika Wilhelmine,
was born to Johann Christian and Christine. Just five days before
her birth, Hanna Friderika's father died on 10 Oct 1842 at the age of
25 years and 3 months. Listing these events in chronological
order we have:
- Jun 1838, calculated birth date (based on age at death) of Johann
August Wilhelm SCHNECK, son of Johann Christian August SCHNECK from
Gross-Sophienthal. His baptism record was not recorded in the
Gross-Sophienthal records. I later found a record of his birth in
the Lutheran church records of Diedrichsdorf on 19 Jun 1838.
- 27 Feb 1840, marriage of Johann Christian August SCHNECK, age 22,
Einwohner in Gross Sophienthal
and Christine Friderike REINHOLZ, age 24, father Johann Gottfried
REINHOLZ, colonist from Diedrichsdorf
- 4 Jun 1840, death of Johann August Wilhelm SCHNECK, age 1 year,
11
months, 15 days, son of Johann Christian August SCHNECK of
Gross-Sophienthal
- 27 Sep 1840, birth of Carl Friedrich Wilhelm SCHNECK, son
of Johann Christian August SCHNECK of Gross-Sophienthal and
Christine Friderike REIHNOLZ
- 10 Oct 1842, death of Johann Christian August SCHNECK, age 25
years, 3 months
- 15 Oct 1842, birth of Hanna Friderika Wilhelmine SCHNECK,
daughter of Johann Christian August SCHNECK of Gross-Sophienthal and
Christine Friderike REIHNOLZ
- 17 Dec 1842, death of Carl Friedrich SCHNECK, age 20 years,
10 months. (Carl may be a brother of Christian August. I
have not determined yet where Christian August was born.)
The next event documented in the church records of Gross-Sophienthal is
the marriage of my 3rd great grandmother, Christine Friderika REINHOLZ,
age 27, widow of Johann Christian August SCHNECK, daughter of Johann
Gottfried REINHOLZ, a colonist from Diedrichsdorf. On 11 May 1843
in the Lutheran Church in Gross-Sophienthal Christine Friderika married
Christian Ludwig MÜLLER, age 27, from Gross-Sophienthal. The
microfilmed church records for the Lutheran church in Gross-Sophienthal
cover the years 1837-1874. After the marriage of Christian Ludwig
and Christine Friderika in 1843, I found no other records containing
the surnames of SCHNECK, REINHOLZ or MÜLLER. Although
Christine
and Christian apparently moved from Gross-Sophienthal, they must not
have gone very far, because my great great grandfather Carl SCHNECK
eventually married in Louisenthal, which is only a few kilometers from
Gross-Sophienthal.
Christine Friderika REINHOLZ was 24 years old when she married Johann
Christian August SCHNECK in 1840, which makes her birth year about
1816. The marriage record from Gross-Sophienthal named her father
as Johann Gottfried
REINHOLZ, colonist from Diedrichsdorf. I checked the Family
History Library Catalog (Familysearch.org) to see if records were
microfilmed for Diedrichsdorf, Prussia, now Bolechowo, Poland. I
found the Lutheran church records for the years 1824 through 1874 were
on microfilm. Even though Christine's birth was before the years
covered by this film, I ordered it in the hope that I might find other
records naming Johann Gottfried REINHOLZ and his wife, or perhaps
records for
children born to Christine and her second husband Christian
Ludwig. The handwriting, coupled with the old German script, make
the earlier records for this parish extremely difficult to read.
I am still in the process of going through this microfilm, but I have
made a few discoveries.
First is that Christine and her second husband Christian did not go to
Diedrichsdorf, after their marriage in Gross-Sophienthal.
However, I did find the baptism record of Johann
August Wilhelm SCHNECK, first child born to Christine Friederika
REINHOLZ and Johann Christian August SCHNECK. Johann August
Wilhelm was born 19 Jun 1838 in Diedrichsdorf, Prussia. He died
at the age of 1 year, 11 months and 15 days on 4 Jun 1840 in
Gross-Sophienthal.
I have found these records naming Johann Gottfried REINHOLZ.
- 22 Oct 1824, birth record, Carl Friedrich August REINHOLZ, father
Johann REINHOLZ, mother Regina NEUMANN
- 20 Nov 1826, birth record, Dorotha Maria REINHOLZ, father Johann
Gottfried REINHOLZ, mother Maria Regina NEUMANN
- Nov 1826, death record, Dor Maria REINHOLZ, age 14 days, father
Johann
Gottfried REINHOLZ, mother M. Regina NEUMANN
- Aug 1858, marriage record, Carl Friedrich August REINHOLZ, age
34, son of colonist Johann Gottfried REINHOLZ; Friedrika Wilhelmine
LENZ of Priemhausen, daughter of Friedrich LENZ
Johann Gottfried REINHOLZ died in Diedrichsdorf at the age of 64 years
on 13 December 1843, leaving a widow and 7 children, 3 of whom were
still minors. Widow Maria Regina REINHOLZ nee NEUMANN died in
Diedrichsdorf at the age of 62 years and 2 months on 19 Mar 1852,
leaving 7 children, 6 of whom had reached their majority, 1 was still a
minor.
While I currently do not have any records that specifically tie this
Johann Gottfried REINHOLZ and Maria Regina nee NEUMANN to Christine
Friederika REINHOLZ SCHNECK MÜLLER, I am fairly certain Johann
Gottfried and Regina are Christine's parents.
I will add updates as I find more in the Diedrichsdorf church records.
