Ignaz Zach
Another Pioneer Has Gone Home

Died at Family Home Last Saturday Night; Funeral Held Tuesday at St. Mary's [Nebraska]

The list of those sturdy pioneers who did so much to make this one of the finest agricultural sections in the country are fast answering the final roll call, the most recent to answer the final summons and pass on to another world was Ignatz Zach, a resident of the St. Mary's community for nearly 69 years. Mr. Zach passed away at the old family home, three miles southeast of this city, at about 9:45 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25, his death being the result of complications due to old age. Although his health had not been of the best for the past few years his condition did not become serious until about five days before his death. Had he lived until Jan. 30, 1941, he would have been 93 years of age. Ignatz Zach, a son of Ignatz and Mary (Pfeifer) Zach was born on the 30th day of January, 1848, at Kuz Schwrza, Austria. Here he spent his childhood days and grew into young manhood. When he reached the age of 24 years he came to America, first going to Wisconsin. He remained here only a few short months and on July 4, 1872, he arrived in Columbs [sic] on his way to the St. Mary's community. There being no mode of transportation in those days the next day he walked from Columbus to the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Peter Braun in the St. Mary's community. He wasted no time in securing for himself a tract of land in that community, homesteading the tract on which he lived until he died. On Nov. 26, 1878, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Braun, the wedding taking place at St. Mary's and the young couple went to housekeeping on his homestead. Fifteen children were born to them, five of whom were called in death in infancy. Mrs. Zach passed away on July 28, 1922. The surviving children are Mrs. G. H. Preister [Rosa Maria] of this city, Mary Zach of Fairmont, N. D., Katherine Zach at home, Ignatz Zach of Pierce, Sister M. Lucella of Platte Center, Martin and Frank Zach of this community, Mrs Adolph Thomas [Julia Mary] of Albion, Mrs. Mike Schaeffer [Johanna Bertha] of San Jose, Calif., and Mrs. Leo Fehringer [Angela Maria] of Peetz, Colo. All the children were present at the funeral except Mrs. Schaeffer of California. He is also survived by one brother, Vincent Zach, sr., of this city, and 52 grandchildren. Two sisters, Mrs. Mike Wieser [Walburga] and Mrs. Ignaz Veithe [Julia or Juliana], and two brothers, John and Frank Zach, preceded him in death. The large gathering in attendance at the funeral services attested to the esteem in which he had been held by his large circle of friends. The services were held at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning at St. Mary's church, Rev. Father Paschal Rollman, pastor officiating at the Requiem High Mass, and also at the short services at the parish cemetery where interment was made. The church choir with Ven. Sister M. Carmelita at the organ assisted during the services. Pallbearers were his grandsons, Edward Zach, Andrew Zach, Ignatz Zach, jr., Dennis Zach, Mark Zach and Leonard Thomas. St. Joseph's Men's society, of which the deceased had been a lifelong member, attended the services in a body. Those here from a distance to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Ignatz Zach and children, Lucy and Mark, of Pierce, Miss Mary Zach of Fairmont, N. D., Sister M. Lucella of Platte Center, Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Thomas and children, Leonard, Dorothy, Katheryn and Eileen of Albion, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Fehringer of Peetz, Colo., Misses Agnes and Gertrude Zach of Omaha, Andrew Zach of Rosholt, S. D., Mr. and Mrs. August Wieser and Ed Wieser of Fairmont, N. D., Mr. and Mrs Wm Dittrich of Meadow Grove, Mr. and Mrs. Julius Hoffman and son, Frederick, Carl Hoffman and son, Sylester, Francilla Tomek, Jos. Hoffman and children, Bertha and Peter, Wm. Zach, Mrs. Anna Polt, Louis Widhalm and Mike Hoffman, all of Pierce, Rev. Father Bardy and Sister M. Virginia of Platte Center. Due to infirmities of old age in recent years the deceased had not taken an active interest in the community which he called his home, but in the early years of his life here he was associated with every activity that took place. He was hardworking, thrifty and provident, an excellent manager, as well as a good christian man, and during his many years of residence in this section merited the high esteem in which he was held. He has gone home but his many kindly deeds will remain as a monument to his memory.
