LACHNIT Family -- The Puzzle

My Great Grandaunt, Katrina/Katherina/Catherine GALUS was a daughter of John and Maryanna PAPROCKI GALUS, and a sister of Sophia GALUS ROSNO and Maryanna GALUS PAPROCKI. On November 7, 1877, Catherine married Franz/Frank LACHNIT. According to the St. Bonaventure Centennial Book, Franz and Catherine were the first couple to be married at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus, Platte County, Nebraska. Witnesses to their marriage were Joseph ROSNO and Amalia LACHNIT.  More about my GALUS family.

In my efforts to trace Catherine and Franz, I collected quite a bit of data about the LACHNIT family in Nebraska. Information that I found in some of the printed resources just didn't seem to fit, when I compared it to other sources.  I think I figured out part of the puzzle. Two obituaries were key in sorting things out:  one for Josephine LACHNIT, who died 2 Feb 1910; and one for Amalia/Amelia LACHNIT, who died 10 Apr 1910.  Another source that I used to determine who belonged to which LACHNIT family was the Platte County Marriage Books published by the Platte County Genealogy Society.  In September 2007 I located the ship passenger lists for both Franz LACHNIT families - both spelled LACHNIK on the manifests.

The information on this page only documents how I came to the conclusion of who belongs to which LACHNIT family.  I will eventually put together a separate page to provide additional details of each family.

First is the obituary of Josephine LACHNIT who died 2 February 1910:.

Obituary of Josephine LACHNIT, Lindsay Post
Mrs. Franz Lachnit, after an illness of two weeks, passed away at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday morning at her home southeast of this city. Hers was the the first death in a family consisting of the father, mother and twelve children, the latter's all being grown. Mrs. Lachnit was taken sick with a severe cold, which developed into pneumonia. She had been critically ill for a day or two. Had she lived until next May, Mrs. Lachnit would have been sixty-nine years old.
She was born and passed her early life in Austria. In company with her husband and a family of children, she came to America in 1874, first locating in Butler County, Bellwood. A few 10 years later the family moved to northern Platte county, then years ago Mr. and Mrs. Lachnit moved to Columbus. They have resided on what is popularly known as the old Tannahill place.
Surviving Mrs. Lachnit are her husband, seven sons and five daughters. The children are: Mrs. Louis (Amelia) Schroeder Sr., Henry C. Lachnit, Louis A. Lachnit, Antone and Mary Lachnit of this city; Joseph and Ferdinand Lachnit and Mrs. Joseph Kleve of Humphrey; Mrs. Peter J. Korth of Cornlea; Mrs. Peter Schmitz of Lindsay; Frank Lachnit of Parkston, South Dakota; John Lachnit of Cedar Rapids. One sister-in-law, Mrs. Amelia Lachnit, resides at the Peter Greisen home of this city. The funeral of Mrs. Lachnit will be held at 9:30 o'clock tomorrow.

The obituary for Josephine posted in the Columbus Journal on 2 February 1910, named Franz Lachnit as her surviving husband. (https://sites.rootsweb.com/~neplatte/vitals/vitals1910.html)

Next is the obituary for Amelia LACHNIT who died 10 April 1910.

Obituary of Amelia LACHNIT, Columbus Post
LACHNIT--Mrs. Amelia Lachnit, aged 89 years, died last Friday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Peter Greisen. Mrs. Lachnit was one of the early settlers of this locality. Born in Austria March 25, 1829, she came to America with her husband in 1874 and settled in Butler county. Later the family removed to Nebraska City, where her husband died, and she then returned to Columbus and has since made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Greisen. Besides her daughter in this city Mrs. Lachnit leaves one son, Frank Lachnit, who resides in Ohio, and a daughter, Mrs. J.W. Smith, who resides near Humphrey. She was a sister of Josephine Lachnit, who died in this city February 2. Funeral services were held Monday at St. Bonaventura's church at 10 a.m., being conducted by Father Marcellinus, and burial was in the parish cemetery.

More records: censuses, draft registrations
Note the names of the parents on Frank's and Anna's marriage records.  (It's a pity that Mary's marriage record does not give her mother's name.)
Frank -- Father, Franz Lacknit, Mother, Amalia Beier
Anna -- Father, Frank Lachnit, Mother, Amalia Byer
In the census records above Frank's in-laws are enumerated with him; Mollie (Amalia) is enumerated with her daughter Mary Greisen.  Mollie states that she has 3 children living out of 8 that she gave birth to.
At this time I have not located Franz and Amelia together in any census.  I have not located Amelia in the 1880 census.  They supposedly immigrated in 1874.  According to Amelia's obituary, her husband died while they were living in Nebraska City, but I have no date of death for him as yet.  Their son Frank married in 1877 in Columbus, and I found him in the 1880 census in Columbus.  Daughter Mary married in 1878 in Platte County; she and her husband Peter Greisen are in Bismark Precinct of Platte County in 1880.  Daughter Anna didn't marry until 1887.  I should at least be able to find Amelia and Anna in the 1880 census, somewhere.

I did find a Frank LACHNIT, age 50, enumerated in the 1885 Nebraska State census in Nebraska City, Otoe County.  But enumerated with him was his wife Marie, age 50 (born about 1835); daughter Anna, age 20 (born about 1864); and a daughter Mary, age 15 (born about 1870).  This doesn't match....  These LACHNITs have been an "interesting" group of folk to track down.

Other sources about the LACHNIT family indicate that the father, Franz LACHNIT, was married twice in Austria.  The sources do not agree on the names of the two wives.  The LACHNIT biography in The St. Francis Assisi, Humphrey, Nebraska Centennial Book, pages 167-169, names Franz's first wife as Amelia BRAUNER and his second wife as Josephine MEIR.  The biography of Joseph LACHNIT in the Past and Present of Platte County, 1915, pages 62-63, says Joseph was a son of  Frank and Josephine LACHNIT (no maiden name for the mother).  The biography goes on to say that Frank's second wife was Josephine MEIR.  Neither of these biographies give their sources.  I wonder if the name MEIR is a misinterpretation of "BEIER" or "BEIR".

While I have not seen the original marriage records for these individuals, only the extracts published by the Platte County Genealogy Society, I am inclined to think that Franz's first wife was Amelia / Amalia.  I am not sure about her maiden name.  The marriage records of Frank thru Anna, with the exception of Louis, names the mother as Josephine and some form of BEIER as her maiden name.

Here is something else to think about.  It appears that Josephine's maiden name was probably BEIER (or some variation).  The marriage records for two of  the children of Amelia LACHNIT give their mother's maiden name as BEIER or BYER.  Amelia's obituary says, "She was a sister of Josephine Lachnit, who died in this city February 2."  However, the obituary of Josephine says, "One sister-in-law, Mrs. Amelia Lachnit, resides at the Peter Greisen home of this city. (Columbus)"  Were they sisters or sisters-in-law?  If they were sisters-in-law were their husbands brothers?  Both of their husbands were named Franz.  The 1930 U.S. census for Nebraska has cousins Mary Greisen, a widow, and Mary Lachnit, single, enumerated in the same household.

One of the sources I originally used for the LACHNIT family was a LACHNIT family history in the St. Francis of Assisi Centennial Book.  I am posting excerpts of that biography here and highlighting what I know to be errors based on what I have documented above.  I have not confirmed all information in this family history, so please verify any dates before you use them as "gospel".

St. Francis Assisi, Humphrey, Nebraska Centennial Book, Pages 167-169

LACHNIT

Franz Lachnit...was of German descent.  ...born in Austria in September of 1835.  He married Amelia Brauner around 1853 in his native land.  [Had] 3 children before Amelia died...in April of 1862 in Austria.
  1. Frank, born in 1854; married Katrina L. Galus November 17, 1877. She was born in 1859, the daughter of John Galus and Mary Paprocki.  This Frank was a son of a Franz and Amelia LACHNIT, but not this couple.  See my supporting documentation starting at the top of this page.  According to Frank's death certificate from the State of Florida, his birth date was 15 Aug 1856.
  2. Amelia, born in 1860; married Louis Schroeder, lived in Columbus.
  3. Joseph, born February 17, 1862.  [A]t age 12 came with his family to Columbus, Nebraska; in 1874.  ...married Mary Hollatz on November 3, 1891, at St. Francis.  Joseph died...June 20, 1912. Mary died on January 16, 1935. [Both are buried at St. Francis Cemetery.]  Parents of 8 children:
    1. Oscar Alfred, born October 27, 1892; died August 24, 1904; buried at St. Francis.
    2. Leo Arnold, born November 23, 1893; married Eileen Carrig November 27, 1917, at Platte Center; moved to Columbus; died October 23, 1956.
    3. Arnold Aloysius, born May 26, 1895; ...married Mary McGuane July 16, 1929, at Platte Center. Mary died June 21, 1973, and Arnold died February 3, 1977; both are buried at St. Francis.
    4. Joseph Ferdinand, born November l2, 1896; died November 19, 1896; buried at St. Francis.
    5. Hilda Eulalia, born February 12, 1898; married Joseph Jiranek in 1926, who died February 21, 1947, and was buried at Columbus; married Steve Douglas November 19, 1949, who died September 14, 1969, and is buried at Columbus.
    6. Amanda Anna, born December 3, 1899; married Ernest Holcomb; moved to Denver; died March 10, 1969; buried at Denver.
    7. Evelene Martha, born January 25, 1903; died December 26, 1903; buried at St. Francis.
    8. Cyril John, born November 8, 1909; married Sedona A. Wittler, June 29, 1932, at Cornlea....
After the death of his first wife, Franz married Josephine Meir in Germany, probably around 1863.  [In] 1874 [they] migrated to the United States, coming to Nebraska.  ...Josephine died on February 2, 1910, and Franz died February 28, 1910; they were buried at Columbus.  I question Josephine's maiden name, based on the information I found for her children in the Platte County Marriage Books.  Please see my documentation starting at the top of this page.

We do not have an accurate list of the children of Franz Lachnit and his second wife, Josephine Meir, but a 1880 census listed the central core of their family, but did not include those who had already married or who were not yet born:
  1. Anna, born in l864; married Joseph W. Smith (widower) April 20, 1887, at St. Francis. He was born in 1850, the son of William Amith (sic) and Catherine Faber. They seem to have lived out their lives here, and Joseph died in 1902, while Anna lived on until April 13, 1950. Both are buried at St. Francis.  This Anna was a daughter of Franz and Amelia LACHNIT, sister of the Franz LACHNIT, who married my great grandaunt Catharine GALUS.  See my supporting documentation starting at the top of this page.  Franz and Josephine had a daughter Anna, but she was born about 1882 in Nebraska and married Peter J. KORTH (see #12 below).  Enumerated in the 1880 U.S. Nebraska census with Franz and Josephine is a daughter Mary, age 16.  She would have been born around 1864.  Mary did not marry.
  2. Frank, born in 1866; married Clara Unger May 14, 1889, at St. Mary’s.  ...lived in the St. Mary’s Parish for several years and then moved away.  Frank and Clara moved to Hutchinson County, Cross Plains Township in South Dakota.  They are enumerated there in the 1910 census.
  3. Ferdinand Aloysius, born January 30, 1868; married Anna Elizabeth Lang August 30, 1904, at St. Francis.  ...Ferdinand died on October 17, 1920, and was buried at St. Francis.
  4. Louis Aloysius, born in 1871; married Catherine Arlt July 7, 1896, at St. Francis.
  5. Theresa, who was born in 1874; married Joseph Kleve April 29, 1890, at St. Mary’s.

  10. Mary, who moved to Columbus.  Mary should be #1 for this couple.  Depending on the sources used, she was born about 1864 / 1866.  She never married.
  11. William Anton, born May 15, 1885, and baptized at St. Mary’s.
  12. Anna Clara, who married Peter J. Korth April 29, 1902; moved to Columbus.  William Anton and Anna Clara should be swapped around.  Anna was born about 1882 in Nebraska.

The 1880 census was cited as the "core" list for this family.  I have already included the 1880 census on this page, but will list part of it again here.  It listed:

The 1885 Nebraska state census also enumerated:
Lachnit, John age 15, born Baden (he wasn't included on the 1880 census.  He would have been 10 years old.)

Lachnit, Wm, age 3/12, born Nebraska

Missing from both of these is Joseph.  He would have been about 18 years old in 1880.
