In October 2014 my niece Jen and her husband Travis asked if I could help research Travis' family history, beginning with the surnames GERLECZ and COSTANTINO.
Travis' paternal grandfather was John E. GERLECZ. This is the information I have found so far for Travis' GERLECZ family.

1928. John married Betty WESTOVER on 25 Aug 1949. Betty was born 24
May 1928 in Utica, Kansas, to Floyd Russel WESTOVER and Margaret Ellen
JONES.
The U.S. censuses are available for viewing through 1940. Since he was born in 1928, John should be listed in the 1930 and 1940 U.S. censuses. 2 year old John was enumerated with his parents and siblings in the 1930 census. They were living at 925 Gypsum Street in Salina, Saline County, Kansas at this time. In 1940 12 year old John was living with his parents and two siblings at 1922 Chicago Street in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska.
John's obituary in the Omaha World-Herald gave information to piece together an initial family group.

Memorial services for Betty "Beanie" Gerlecz, 85, of Copperas Cove, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Scott's Funeral Home Chapel in Copperas Cove.
Mrs. Gerlecz died Nov. 2, 2013, in a local nursing home. She was born May 24, 1928, in Utica, Kan., to the late Floyd and Margaret Jones Westover. She grew up in Junction City, Kan., with her brothers, Gene, Vern, Leonard and sister, Dorothy.
She married John Gerlecz on Aug. 25, 1949, and they resided in Omaha, Neb. She had resided in Copperas Cove since 2001. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Nebraska.
Mrs. Gerlecz was preceded in death by her husband, John, on June 10, 2002; her brothers; and a son, Michael Gerlecz, in 2009.
Survivors include her daughters, Cindy Adams and Nancy Gerlecz; sons, Tom Gerlecz and Joe Gerlecz; sister, Dorothy "Dottie" Martin; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
Scott's Funeral Home in Copperas Cove is in charge of arrangements.

Travis' grandfather John E. GERLECZ was enumerated with his parents, Michael "Mike" and Anna in the 1930 and 1940 U.S. censuses. According to the 1930 census Mike and Anna immigrated to the United States in 1904, so they would have also been enumerated in the 1910 and 1920 U.S. censuses.

In 1910 Michael and his wife Anna were living at
299 S. Harrison in Kansas City, Kansas. Based on their ages,
Michael was born about 1886 and Anna was born about 1885. They
noted that they were married 0 years, so they were probably married in
1909 or 1910. Both Michael and Anna were born in Hungary and
according to the census, both of them immigrated in 1904; Michael
indicated that he filed his Declaration of Intention or first papers to
become a U.S. citizen. Michael's occupation was a blacksmith with
the railroad. Two of Michael's brothers were living with them at
the time of this census: Frank, who was born about 1875 in Hungary,
immigrated in 1906; George, who was born about 1890 in Hungary,
immigrated in 1908. Frank indicated that he was married, but his
wife was not listed.

In 1917
and 1918 there were three World War I draft registrations. The 1st
was on 5 Jun 1917 for men ages 21-31. The 2nd was 5 Jun
1918 for men who turned 21 since the 1st registration. The 3rd started
12 Sep 1918 for men ages 18-45. Michael was 33 years old in 1918
and therefore had to register for the draft. His address was 802
Vermont in Kansas City, Kansas. He gave his date of birth as Aug.
25, 1885 and showed he was a naturalized citizen. He was employed
as a blacksmith for the U. P. Railway in Kansas City, Kansas. Anna
Gerlecz was named as his nearest relative.The earlier draft registration cards asked for a registrant's place of birth. Michael's brother George was in the first draft and gave his place of birth as Tarany, Hungary, Austria.
The
censuses indicated Michael arrived in the United States in 1904 or 1905
and that he was naturalized in 1917. One of the collections at
Ancestry.com is the Missouri, Western District Naturalization Index,
1848-1990. Michael's entry gave his date of birth as 25 Aug 1885

Prior to
finding the Naturalization Index entry I found a 19-year-old Milesly
Gerlecz listed on a ship manifest arriving at the Port of New York on 26 Apr
1904. He was going to join a friend, Johan Weisz, who lived in New
York. Since the date of arrival noted on Michael's naturalization
index entry was only 2 days different than the ship's manifest, I am fairly certain these are the same Michael.Another passenger listed on the same manifest was an Istvan Gerlecz, age 31, who was also going to join a friend, Johan Weisz, in New York. I have not made a connection between Milesly and Istvan yet.
Michael's brothers George and Frank were enumerated with him in the 1910 U.S. census. They indicated that they immigrated to the U.S. in 1906 / 1908. A ship manifest listed Ferencz and Gyorgy GERLECZ, who arrived at the Port of New York on 8 Nov 1908. This manifest asked who their nearest relative was in their originating country. Both named their father Ferencz in Tarany / Csurgo , Hungary. They were going to join their brother Imre in Kansas City, Kansas.

The information in the U.S. censuses indicated Michael was born
about 1885 in Hungary. A search using Michael's name, year and
place of birth at the Mormon site at FamilySearch.org listed a baptism record from the Hungary Catholic Church
Records collection for a Mihaly GERLECZ, baptized 27 Aug 1885 in Tarány, Somogy, Hungary, a son of Ferencz GERLECZ and Katalin RENGEL. Pieces of information from various U.S. records led me to believe this was the baptism record of Michael GERLECZ. Michael gave his date of birth as 25 Aug 1885 on his naturalization information. The ship manifest said he was from Tarany, Hungary. His brothers, Frank and George, said their father's name was Ferencz GERLECZ in Tarany, Hungary.
A search for other children born to Ferencz GERLECZ and Katalin RENGEL in the Tarany records listed 8 results. Among them were a Ferencz GERLECZ, baptized 17 Apr 1875, and a Gyorgy GERLECZ, baptized 12 May 1890. Based on their ages from the 1908 ship manifest and the 1910 U.S. census, Frank was born about 1875 and George was born about 1890. George gave his date and place of birth as 11 May 1890 in Tarany, Hungary, on his World War I Draft Registration. All of these dates coincide.
The index entry from FamilySearch.org gives Mihaly's baptism date. Typically the baptism was just a day or two after birth.

FamilySearch.org's Kansas, Marriages, 1840-1935 collection had an entry for Mike and Anna. According to this index Mike GERLECZ and Anna BACSIK were married 29 Sep 1909 in Kansas City, Wayndotte County, Kansas. The date matches the note on Michael's baptism record.

Ancestry.com has online images of the Missouri Marriage Records, 1805-2002 collection. This document is an application for a marriage license for 43-year-old Edward A. MEYER and 20-year-old Gizella GERLECZ. I am not sure when the actual marriage took place.
In 1940 Edward and Gizella were enumerated in Salina, Saline County, Kansas, living at 925 Gypsum Avenue. They were the parents of one son, 10-year-old Marvin E. By this time Gizella's parents were living in Omaha, Nebraska.
The 1941 Salina, Kansas, city directory shows that Edward A. and wife Ella were still living at 925 Gypsum av. Edward's occupation was a painter. Edward and Zella / Ella were not listed in the 1943 or 1946 Salina directory.
The research site "Find My Past" (http://www.findmypast.com) had a free weekend in Nov 2014 in honor of Veteran's Day. Their newspaper collection had an obituary for Gizella's brother Joseph in the Salina (Kansas) Journal, dated 13 Mar 1955. Mrs. Zella Rengle of Kansas City was named as a surviving sister. Using the last name of Rengle, Ancestry.com showed a U.S. Social Security Death Index entry for Gizella RENGEL, born 18 Jul 1910, died Dec 1977. Her last residence on record with the Social Security Administration was Shawnee Mission, Kansas.
An Ancestry.com "hint" brought up several city directory entries for Gizella G RENGEL. In the available directories from 1945 through 1963 Gizella and her husband Michael RENGEL were living at 90 S 7th Street in Kansas City, Kansas. 1961 was the last online Kansas City directory available at Ancestry. Their address would have been next door to Gizella's uncle James GERLECZ (92 S 7th St.).
The 1930 and 1940 U.S. censuses have a Mike RENGEL boarding at 90 S 7th Street.

I have not located Joseph and Ada in the 1940 U.S. census. They were not listed in the Omaha, Nebraska, city directories for 1940 or 1941. They did appear in the 1942 Omaha directory.
According to FindAGrave.com, Joseph died 10 Mar 1955. He is buried in Highland Cemetery, Junction City, Geary County, Kansas. Ada died 9 Dec 1995 and is also buried at Highland Cemetery.

Joe Gerlecz
The funeral for Joe Gerlecz, 42, Omaha, Neb., formerly of Salina, will be at 2 pm Monday in Junction City. Burial will be in the Highland cemetery, Junction City.
Mr. Gerlecz died Thursday after a 2-year illness.
Born in Kansas City, Kas., he came to Salina in 1921 with his parents. The family lived here until 1932, then moved to Junction City. In 1942 Mr. Gerlecz moved to Omaha where he was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad.
Surviving are the widow, a daughter, Ada Ruth, of the home, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Gerlecz, Omaha; four sisters and three brothers, Mrs. Zella Rengle, Kansas City; Mrs. Anna Crider and Mrs. Ethel Darby, Junction City; Mrs Virginia Ludes, Salina, Frank, St. Joseph, Mo., George, Norfolk, Neb., and John, Omaha.

Anna Crider
Wichita -- Anna Crider, 75, Wichita, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 1989, at HCA Wesley Regional Medical Center, Wichita.
Mrs. Crider was born Anna Gerlecz on April 8, 1914, in Kansas City and was a longtime resident of Junction City. She was a retired telephone operator and a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wichita.
Her husband, Lester, died in 1982.
Survivors include two daughters, Stephanie Pazur of Norfolk, Va., and Carol Thompson of Goddard; a brother, John Gerlecz of Omaha, Neb.; a sister Virginia Ludes of Gypsum; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Mass-Hinitt-Alexander Funeral Home, Junction City, the Rev. John Nierman officiating. Burial will be in the Highland Cemetery, Junction City.
Memorials may be made to the Wichita Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
Visitation is at the funeral home.

Edgar was the son of Marshall Edward and Nora Ethel Bradford Darby. Ethel and Edgar were the parents of Frank M., Donald L., and Edgar M. Darby Jr.
Initially I could not find Ethel in the 1940 U.S. census. Through Ancestry.com I connected with another GERLECZ researcher who is a descendant of Ethel. Ethel was married prior to her marriage to Edgar DARBY. She was enumerated in Junction City, Geary County, Kansas as Ethel GODDARD with her two sons Frank (age 6) and Donald (age 5).
Ethel died 20 Apr 1979; Edgar died 22 Jun 1992 in Junction City, Kansas. Both are buried at Highland Cemetery in Junction City, Geary County, Kansas.
Frank Michael GERLECZ
Frank was enumerated with his parents in the 1920 and 1930 U.S. censuses. His age was given as 3 and 12 respectively; he was born in Kansas.
The family was living at 224 Homer Avenue in Kansas City, Wyandotte County, Kansas in 1920. The 1930 census shows they were living at 925 Gypsum in Salina, Saline County, Kansas.
According to his FindAGrave memorial, Frank was born 28 May 1917 in Kansas City, Wyandotte County, Kansas.
I have not found Frank in the 1940 U.S. Census. Frank's Social Security Death Index entry showed he applied for his SS account in Wyoming. I checked for entries in any of the city directories at Ancestry.com and found a Frank Gerlecz in Cheyenne, Wyoming in 1939 and a Frank M Gerlecz in Independence, Missouri in 1942.
Frank enlisted in the U.S. Army on 19 Mar 1945 at Fort Levenworth, Kansas. His residence was Douglas County, Nebraska. He was single when he enlisted.

Frank married Dolores Jean HANIGAN on 11 Sep 1949 in Sedalia, Missouri; she was born 13 Apr 1928.

Joe Gerlecz
The funeral for Joe Gerlecz, 42, Omaha, Neb., formerly of Salina, will be at 2 pm Monday in Junction City. Burial will be in the Highland cemetery, Junction City.
Mr. Gerlecz died Thursday after a 2-year illness.
Born in Kansas City, Kas., he came to Salina in 1921 with his parents. The family lived here until 1932, then moved to Junction City. In 1942 Mr. Gerlecz moved to Omaha where he was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad.
Surviving are the widow, a daughter, Ada Ruth, of the home, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Gerlecz, Omaha; four sisters and three brothers, Mrs. Zella Rengle, Kansas City; Mrs. Anna Crider and Mrs. Ethel Darby, Junction City; Mrs Virginia Ludes, Salina, Frank, St. Joseph, Mo., George, Norfolk, Neb., and John, Omaha.

Anna Crider
Wichita -- Anna Crider, 75, Wichita, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 1989, at HCA Wesley Regional Medical Center, Wichita.
Mrs. Crider was born Anna Gerlecz on April 8, 1914, in Kansas City and was a longtime resident of Junction City. She was a retired telephone operator and a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wichita.
Her husband, Lester, died in 1982.
Survivors include two daughters, Stephanie Pazur of Norfolk, Va., and Carol Thompson of Goddard; a brother, John Gerlecz of Omaha, Neb.; a sister Virginia Ludes of Gypsum; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Mass-Hinitt-Alexander Funeral Home, Junction City, the Rev. John Nierman officiating. Burial will be in the Highland Cemetery, Junction City.
Memorials may be made to the Wichita Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
Visitation is at the funeral home.

Initially I could not find Ethel in the 1940 U.S. census. Through Ancestry.com I connected with another GERLECZ researcher who is a descendant of Ethel. Ethel was married prior to her marriage to Edgar DARBY. She was enumerated in Junction City, Geary County, Kansas as Ethel GODDARD with her two sons Frank (age 6) and Donald (age 5).

I checked for entries in any of the city directories at Ancestry.com and found a Frank Gerlecz in Cheyenne, Wyoming in 1939 and a Frank M Gerlecz in Independence, Missouri in 1942.

Frank died 3 Mar 1977 in Topeka, Shawnee County, Kansas. Dolores died 30 Mar 2001. Both of them are buried at Memorial Park Cemetery in Sedalia, Pettis County, Missouri.

Mrs. Ludes worked as a bookkeeper and in sales for Evergreen Builders and for Perry’s Liquor Store for seven years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Michael and Anna (Basicek) Gerlecz, and by her husband, John Ludes Sr.
Survivors included her daughter, Rose Ward; son, John Ludes Jr.; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren.

Knowing the name of Travis' grandfather and determining the name of his great grandfather, provided information for additional searches at Ancestry.com and at the Mormon FamilySearch.org site. One of the search results at FamilySearch for Michael was a baptism record in the Hungary Catholic Church Records collection. The date of baptism was just 2 days later than the birth date Michael had given on his naturalization information. Parents of Mihaly (Michael) were Ferencz GERLECZ and Katalin RENGEL.
In the 1910 census brothers Frank and George GERLECZ were enumerated with their brother Michael and his wife. Based on the ages they gave on the census, Frank was born about 1875 and George was born about 1890. When I searched for other children born to Ferencz and Katalin, I found 7 other children. One was Ferencz, who was baptized 17 Apr 1875. Another was Gyorgy, who was baptized 12 May 1890. These dates coincided with the calculated year of birth from the census.

On the 1908 ship manifest Ferencz / Frank said he had been to the U.S.
before in 1903 and 1907. He indicates he is married on both the ship
list and the 1910 census, but I have found no mention of his wife in the
U.S. records. I wonder if Ferencz worked in the U.S. for a time and
then went back to Hungary.Mihaly

James Gerlecz Shows Wounds Made by Wife--Not Held for Contempt.
Topeka, Feb. 16.--Unaccompanied by an attorney, James Gerlecz, a blacksmith in the Union Pacific railroad shops at Kansas City, Kans., made a plea for clemency before the Kansas supreme court yesterday and won.
The court agreed that Gerlecz should not be sent to jail for contempt because he had failed to pay alimony, court costs and attorney's fees, as ordered by the court.
Gerlecz displayed scars on his body, declaring that as a result of two bullet wounds, inflicted by his wife, Anna, he had been confined to a hospital and for that reason had been unable to pay.
Gerlecz's total obligations in the lower court and in the supreme court exceeded $400. Upon agreement that he pay $50 a month to cover all claims Gerlecz was released. He was accompanied by the sheriff of Wyandotte County.

different wives in the 1920 and 1940 censuses. Based on entries I

have not found James on a ship manifest. However, one of my
searches brought up a result for a 22-year-old female Imrené GERLECZ and
1-year-old daughter Iren. They were going to be with Imre
Gerlecz, Kansas City, Ks 736 Homer str. I searched for a feminine
version of the male name Imre and found nothing. Our Imre went by
the name of James in the U.S. and one of his addresses was 736 Homer
str. Imrené also named her father Nemeth Ianes on the
manifest. The maiden name I found for James' first wife Anna in
U.S. sources was NEMED / NEMATH.At Wikipedia I found an article on Hungarian Names with a section about Married Names. This custom has changed, but back in the day, when a woman married she dropped her given name and then took her husband's given name with the -né ending. This loosely means wife of Imre. This passenger was Anna, James' wife, using the Hungarian version of her married name.

The ship manifest shows that Anna / Imrené was born in Döbörhegy, Hungary. I have not found any indexed records for this village at FamilySearch.org. The ship list said daughter Iren was born in Döbörhegy, but it also said she was U.S Born. Other sources show Irene was born in Kansas.

CHAPMAN. Further research determined she was James'
daughter. At FamilySearch.org there was an entry in the Arkansas, County Marriages, 1837-1957 collection for the marriage of Irene M. GERLECZ and John H. CHAPMAN.
In the State of Arkansas, County of Crittenden, John J. CHAPMAN, age 26, of Millington, Shelby County, Tennessee, and Miss Irene M. GERLECZ, age 28, of Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee, were married on 1 August 1936 by Justice of the Peace A. B Wylie.

I did
not find George in the 1930 U.S. census. A Google search on the
web brought up an entry at a site called Ancient Faces that had a George
GERLECZ who died 27 Feb 1922 in Missouri. Missouri has an online
database of death certificates at Missouri Digital Heritage. The
death certificate was for a 31-year-old George GERLECZ. His
address was the same as that on the 1920 census, which confirmed this
was the same person. George died at University Hospital in Kansas
City, Missouri, of pneumonia. He was a widower; his wife's name
was Nellie. George's date of birth was given as 15 May 1890 in
Hungary. He was a machinist for Union Pacific Railroad. His
parents were named: father, Frank GERLECZ; mother, Kate RENGEL.
These statistical data were given by George's brother James
GERLECZ. On 2 Mar 1922 George was buried at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Kansas City, Kansas.
I do not have any other information about George's wife Nellie nor his daughter Katherine. Since his death certificate indicated he was widowed, Nellie died sometime after the 1920 census and before George's death in Feb 1922.
