My GALUS family immigrated to Nebraska. Early in my research two of my aunts said that a couple of my grandfather's brothers were in Illinois and Michigan. Over the years I compiled information about GALUS families located in Illinois and Michigan in an effort to try and track down my grandfather's brother Joseph GALUS.

This page contains some of the miscellaneous information I accumulated on Michigan GALUS families. I have no personal knowledge about these people, so it is possible I have made some errors in linking data from different sources to specific individuals. Please let me know of any corrections to be made --

Back in December 1997 when my aunts mentioned that a couple of their uncles had lived in Illinois and/or Michigan, I composed a letter highlighting what I knew about my GALUS family at that time. I sent this letter to all GALUS households in Michigan and Illinois asking if any of the information I had rang a bell. I recently came across a note I had filed away for future reference from that mailing. In June 1998 I received a phone call from a Mrs. Frank Galus in Rosebush, Michigan. She called to say that her son had found these tombstones in St. Anthony's Cemetery:

I couldn't find a St. Anthony's Cemetery in Isabella County, where Rosebush is located. I went to Find-A-Grave (www.findagrave.com) and found a St. Anthony's Cemetery located in Fisherville, Bay County, Michigan, which is not too far distant from Isabella County. In the online Social Security death index I found a listing for Frank and also found an entry for him in the Michigan Deaths, 1971-1996 at Ancestry.com:

When I jotted this information down in 1998, there wasn't nearly as much information available on the web that there is today. When I ran across this note a few weeks ago, I went the USGenWeb for both Isabella and Bay counties and checked out their sites. On the Bay County site I found a link to a listing of the tombstones at St. Anthony Cemetery at http://www.mifamilyhistory.org/bay/StAnthony.htm. There were no GALUSes listed.

The names on the stones found by the son of the woman who called me are the same as those of my granduncle Joseph's family. However, the birth year of my Joseph is 1878 (from his birth record), the stone has 1881; Anna's birth year is 1889 according to the 1900 census, the stone says 1888; their son Frank was born 26 Feb 1914, the Michigan Deaths at Ancestry gives this Frank's birth date as 19 Feb 1914.... I am still not certain this my Joseph. Since I have the specific information about Frank's death, I could send for a copy of his death record and hope his parents' names (mother's maiden name) is included on the record. It should also include where he is buried. The copy doesn't come cheap though -- $26.00 (Dec 2008).
