BULTMANN / BULTMAN

One of my sisters is married to a BULTMANN from Minnesota. My brother-in-law and his brother recently found a photograph of their father in his Army uniform.   Since I am the genealogist in the family, they asked me if I might be able to find out when he enlisted in the Army.  Through an online subscription, I was able to locate Harold Elmer BULTMANN in the World War II Army Enlistment records.  According to his enlistment information, Harold E. BULTMANN was born in 1926 in Nobles County, Minnesota.  He enlisted on 22 Jan 1945 at Fort Snelling, Minnesota.  At the time he was single with no dependents.

Since he was born in 1926, I told my sister I should be able to find Harold in the 1930 U.S. census.  I asked her to get the names of her husband's BULTMANN grandparents.  Harold was a son of  Henry William BULTMANN and Christina nee BEHR.  I found Henry and Christina enumerated in the 1930 census in Bloom Township, Nobles County, Minnesota (see census extracts).  Using the U.S. censuses and online resources for Minnesota and Illinois, I have pieced together information for four generations of the BULTMANN family.

Henry and Christina were in Bloom Township, Nobles County, Minnesota in 1930.  One of the questions on the 1930 census asked each married person how old she/he was when they first married.  At the time of the census Henry said he was 34 years old and he was 23 when he first married.  Christina was 29 years old in 1930 and was 18 years old when she first married.  Doing the math, we can calculate that Henry and Christina were married about 11 years, so they were married about 1919.  Enumerated with Henry and Christina were Edwin, age 10;  Ruth, age 6; Harold, age 4; Lyla, age 11/12; and Henry's brother Fred, who was 22 years old and single.  Both Henry and his brother Fred said they were born in Minnesota and that their father was born in Illinois and their mother was born in Iowa.  Christina's parents were born in Germany.  Approximate birth years can be derived by subtracting the age from 1930.  Since Henry and Christina were married about 1919, I looked for them in the 1920 U.S. census.

Henry and Christina were in Bloom Township, Nobles County, Minnesota in 1920.  Their son Edwin F. was enumerated with them.
